What Your IP Address Reveals: How to Check It and Read the Results

A website can generally see the public IP address your connection uses. An IP lookup may associate it with an internet provider or organization and estimate a geographic area—but it does not, by itself, reliably reveal your home address or identify the person using the connection. Checking the address is straightforward; interpreting the results requires care.

What an IP address can show

Your public IP address is part of the information used to route traffic between your connection and a website. A website may receive and store it. An IP lookup then matches that address against a database, which may report an internet service provider (ISP), a registered organization, or an estimated location. These are database associations, not necessarily verified details about you.

Network or organization information

Lookup results often identify the ISP or organization associated with an IP address rather than the individual internet user. Information and Privacy Commission NSW says that generally only an ISP can connect an IP address to an individual account holder. It also notes that an IP address may become personal information when combined with other identifying details. This is jurisdiction-specific privacy guidance, not a universal legal conclusion. Read the NSW fact sheet.

Geographic estimates

An IP lookup can estimate a broad location, but a city label or map point is not proof that you—or your home—are there. Precision and availability vary by country and by the database used. MaxMind’s live comparison, for example, distinguishes locations placed within 50 km, city locations outside 50 km, and cases with no city-level data; its results vary by country and configuration. That vendor comparison is not a universal accuracy benchmark. See MaxMind’s comparison.

Can someone find your home address from your IP?

An IP address lookup alone does not reliably provide a street address or identify the person using the connection. It may point to an ISP, organization, or approximate area. An ISP may have records connecting an address assignment to an account, but the lookup result itself is not that account record. Other information combined with an IP address can make it identifying in context.

A Canadian privacy investigation published in 2013 described how an IP address could serve as a starting point for combining records. Its example involved an institutional proxy and a search result count of more than 240 hits; that was a case-specific historical illustration, not a general measure of what a residential IP reveals today. The report says its analysis is not a statement about current or future law-enforcement procedures. Read the Canadian Commissioner’s report.

IP lookup versus browser location permission

A website receiving the public IP used by your connection is different from a browser asking to share device location. The W3C Geolocation API can draw on sources such as GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and network signals. Its specification requires express user permission before a web application receives location data, and warns that the API does not guarantee the device’s actual location. A location-permission prompt is therefore a separate request from simply displaying an IP lookup. Read the W3C Geolocation specification.

How to check the IP address websites see

  1. Open a reputable IP-check page while connected to the network you want to check. Note the public IP address it displays.

  2. Read any ISP, organization, and location fields as indicators associated with that address—not as verified personal details or a confirmed home location.

  3. If you are checking a change in routing, such as connecting to a VPN, compare the reported address before and after the change. This only checks the address visible to that page; it does not establish what every browser or network signal may reveal.

  4. Before using an unfamiliar checker, review its privacy practices. A checker may receive information as you visit it, and the accuracy or data handling of any particular site should not be assumed.

  5. If the site asks for browser location permission, decide separately whether to grant it. That permission concerns location data from the browser’s Geolocation API, not just the public IP lookup.

Why IP lookup results may differ

Lookup providers rely on databases with different coverage and location estimates, so two services can associate the same IP with different places or levels of detail. A result may show a nearby city, a broader area, or no city-level location. Unless a lookup provides a confidence measure or accuracy radius, do not treat a precise-looking map marker as proof of precise location.

IP assignments may be dynamic or static, and assignment behavior depends on the network and provider. A result can therefore describe the address in use at the time of the check rather than a permanent identifier for a person or device. The NSW fact sheet describes these as general categories; it does not establish how a particular provider assigns addresses.

What a VPN changes—and what it does not establish

A VPN can route your connection through another endpoint, so a website may see the endpoint’s public IP rather than the one used by your original connection. Comparing the address shown before and after connecting can confirm what the checker sees. It does not prove anonymity or that every other signal, such as browser location data shared with permission, is concealed.
