The documented route is the community-made D2R VR project, which combines the PC game with D2RLoader, ReShade, BodyWalk, FlatVR and Game Link. You need the Resurrected edition—not the original 2000 Diablo II—a PC-compatible VR headset and enough graphics performance to render the game at your headset’s refresh rate.
The requirements below are the project’s documented configuration, not a guarantee that every patched installation will work. D2R VR is intended for offline single-player use; its maintainers warn that injecting the mod into online play can result in an account ban.

What exactly is Diablo II VR?
D2R VR is a fan project that adds stereoscopic and positional-VR features to Diablo II: Resurrected on Windows. It is a mod layered on top of the normal PC game, not a separate game or an adaptation of the original 2000 release. The project README says it is not made, endorsed or supported by Blizzard Entertainment. You therefore need a legitimate Windows installation of Resurrected before installing any VR files.
Blizzard’s launch guide documents installing the game through Battle.net. The game is a digital PC product, and Blizzard requires a broadband connection for downloading plus periodic connections for updates and authentication. Once authenticated, the D2R VR project limits its use to offline single-player.

The hardware and software checklist
1. Diablo II: Resurrected for Windows
Install the Windows PC edition of Diablo II: Resurrected. The VR project does not target the original Diablo II, console editions or a standalone headset version. Keep the game updated only after checking the VR project’s compatibility notes, because a Blizzard patch can change the addresses that the loader and plug-ins expect.
2. A Windows gaming PC
Blizzard lists Windows 10 for both the minimum and recommended operating-system entries. Those specifications describe the flat game. They do not establish a VR-ready performance target, and no reviewed source supplies a tested frame-rate benchmark for D2R VR.
3. A PC VR headset with motion controllers
The setup requires a headset that can run PC VR and provide tracked head and hand data. The integration passes that information through BodyWalk and FlatVR. The project documentation does not name a required headset brand, model or complete compatibility list, so choose hardware based on whether it supports PC VR, has controller tracking recognized by your runtime, and can connect to your computer reliably by cable or wireless networking.
4. The documented mod stack
The project README currently identifies this combination:
- D2RLoader 1.3.1
- ReShade with add-on support, with Generic Depth enabled
- BodyWalk 1.78 or later
- FlatVR and Game Link components used with BodyWalk
The project’s installer page can help install and configure parts of this stack, but its exact screens and bundled versions can change. Follow the current instructions on the D2R VR README and the BodyWalk D2R VR setup page rather than relying on an old tutorial.

5. An offline single-player plan
D2R VR is documented for offline single-player only. Do not launch Battle.net multiplayer, join online games or inject the loader into online play. Blizzard still requires periodic internet access for authentication and updates, but the mod’s gameplay use should remain offline.
Official PC requirements for the base game
These are Blizzard’s published Windows specifications. They are useful as a floor for running Resurrected normally, but meeting the minimum does not mean the system will deliver comfortable VR.

Blizzard’s support requirements page cautions that specifications can change. The figures above come from Blizzard’s 2021 launch documentation and concern the flat game only. VR adds headset rendering, depth processing and mod overhead. The available documentation gives no measured VR frame rate, no tested minimum GPU tier and no promise that the recommended flat-game card will hold a particular headset refresh rate.
Version compatibility matters more than usual
The README documents game build 3.3.93787 with D2RLoader 1.3.1. If your game uses another build, the project says its memory addresses must be checked; the plug-in reports that information in its log. This is why an installation that worked before a game update can stop working without any hardware change.
- Record your game build before installing the mod.
- Check the project README and status information after every Blizzard update.
- Do not assume that copying an older loader or plug-in into a newly patched game is safe.
- If the log reports address or build incompatibility, stop and obtain the matching files instead of repeatedly launching the game.
How to install the documented setup
File names and installer screens can change, so use the current project instructions for download locations. The safe order is:

- Install and authenticate the PC game. Install Diablo II: Resurrected through Battle.net, let the client finish its update, and launch the unmodified game once. This confirms that the base installation and account authentication work before you add a loader.
- Prepare PC VR. Install the software supplied by your headset platform, connect the headset, pair its motion controllers and verify that another PC-VR application can see the headset and controllers. A headset that only works as a display, without tracked input, will not provide the hand data this mod expects.
- Obtain the D2R VR files. Read the current project README and use its installer or release instructions. The project describes the mod as free; its installer can also set up a free BodyWalk Lite installation when BodyWalk is not already present.
- Match the loader to the game build. For the documented configuration, use D2RLoader 1.3.1 with game build 3.3.93787. If your build differs, follow the project’s address-check procedure and inspect the plug-in log before proceeding.
- Install ReShade correctly. Use a ReShade build with add-on support and enable the Generic Depth component as specified by the project. Generic Depth is needed for the depth-based VR presentation; installing ordinary shader files without add-on support is not the same setup.
- Configure BodyWalk, FlatVR and Game Link. Install BodyWalk 1.78 or later and enable the FlatVR and Game Link parts called for by the project. Follow the current BodyWalk setup page for its order and permissions, because those details are maintained separately from the game mod.
- Launch an offline character and test one mode at a time. Start the game without entering online play. Confirm that the headset view, controller input and depth effect work before changing graphics settings or attempting first-person mode.
What the mod’s VR modes actually do
The README describes four presentation options:
- Stereo top-down view: the familiar Diablo camera rendered in stereoscopic 3D.
- Free third-person view: a viewpoint positioned behind the hero rather than locked to the normal camera.
- Mixed-reality floor view: a mode that places the game presentation on a virtual or mixed-reality floor surface.
- First-person view: the project’s F4 mode, with arms controlled by headset controllers.
First-person should be treated as an early preview, not a finished conversion. The author notes that weapons are not calibrated yet, so hand placement and aiming can be wrong for many weapons. If you want the most predictable starting point, test the stereo top-down or third-person view first.

Project-recommended display settings
For stereo presentation, the project recommends the following settings. They are guidance from the mod author, not universal requirements for every headset or graphics card:
- Turn VSync off.
- Set a 180-frame cap, described as 90 frames per eye.
- Use FXAA or MSAA instead of TAA.
- Set ambient occlusion to medium.
- Use a square game image, either by resizing the game window or by using a square FlatVR virtual monitor.
Apply one change at a time and check whether the headset view remains stable. A square image is a projection requirement in the project’s notes; it is not a statement that every headset has a square panel.
How to choose a headset when no model is specified
Because the project does not publish a required model list, compare headsets on practical compatibility rather than a brand name:

No source confirms a specific headset as required or tested. Treat retailer compatibility claims separately from the D2R VR project’s own documentation.

Performance planning and common limits
The old GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7850 minimum is a starting point for the flat game, not a sensible VR target by itself. VR generally gives you less tolerance for dropped frames because the headset displays a view close to your eyes. The project’s 180-frame recommendation is tied to its 90-per-eye explanation, but no independent benchmark establishes what GPU, CPU or headset refresh rate is necessary.
If performance is poor, first verify that the game is using the intended graphics card, close unnecessary overlays, and test the project’s recommended anti-aliasing and ambient-occlusion settings. Lowering image quality can help, but it cannot fix a loader or version mismatch.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The mod does not load after a game update
Check the installed build against 3.3.93787 and confirm that D2RLoader 1.3.1 is still the matching loader. For another build, use the project’s address-check process and read the plug-in log. Wait for updated project instructions rather than forcing old addresses.
The game is visible but not in stereo or depth
Confirm that ReShade has add-on support and that Generic Depth is active. Then verify that FlatVR is configured and that the game image uses the square layout recommended by the project. A normal ReShade installation without the depth add-on will not provide the documented setup.

Check that the PC-VR runtime sees both motion controllers, then verify BodyWalk 1.78 or later, FlatVR and Game Link. Re-pairing controllers can help with runtime detection, but it will not solve a missing or incompatible BodyWalk component.

First-person weapons look misaligned
This is a known limitation of the documented preview. Weapon calibration is incomplete, so try stereo or third-person mode for a more consistent view rather than treating every aiming error as a hardware fault.
The game launches, but online features are unavailable
That is an intentional safety boundary. The project is for offline single-player, and its maintainers warn against online code injection. Keep a separate, unmodded installation or launch path for any online play permitted by Blizzard, and never load the VR injector into an online session.
Cost, licensing and support boundaries
The D2R VR project describes itself as free and MIT-licensed. BodyWalk and FlatVR are separate products, and the installer may provide BodyWalk Lite when needed. You still need to own Diablo II: Resurrected and a suitable PC VR headset. Blizzard does not support the mod, and the project’s README explicitly separates its work from Blizzard’s official support.

- Windows 10 with a working Diablo II: Resurrected PC installation.
- At least Blizzard’s published flat-game baseline: 8 GB RAM, 30 GB storage, and the listed minimum processor and graphics card; more headroom may be needed for VR.
- A PC VR headset with tracked motion controllers and a reliable PC connection.
- Game build 3.3.93787, or a newer project-confirmed combination after checking compatibility.
- D2RLoader 1.3.1, ReShade add-on support with Generic Depth, BodyWalk 1.78 or later, FlatVR and Game Link.
- An offline single-player character and time to test the stack before changing modes.
If those conditions are met, D2R VR can put the Resurrected version of Diablo II into stereoscopic, third-person, mixed-reality or experimental first-person views. The practical caveats are equally important: compatibility follows game builds, first-person remains a preview, and the mod should not be used online.
