You can play Steam games on an Android phone, tablet, or TV by streaming them from a computer through the free Steam Link app. The Android device displays the host PC’s video and audio and sends your controls back; the PC still runs the game. You therefore need an Android device that can run Steam Link, a host computer with Steam and the game installed, a network that allows the two devices to communicate, and controls that the game recognizes. A physical controller is useful but optional.
How Steam gaming on Android works
Steam Link is a streaming client, not an Android port of your PC library. Steam Remote Play runs the game on your gaming computer, captures its video and audio, and transmits that stream to the Android device while returning button presses, stick movement, keyboard input, or touch input to the computer. Steam describes this process on its Remote Play page.

That distinction explains both the appeal and the limits. The phone does not need the PC game’s Windows files or enough graphics power to render the game itself, but the computer must remain switched on, signed in to Steam, and capable of launching the title. Your experience is determined by the host PC, the network path, the Android client, and the game’s input and display behavior together.

| Part | What you need | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Android client | An Android phone, tablet, or TV running Android 5.0 or newer, with the free Steam Link app | Steam lists this as the app requirement; it does not guarantee that every game or controller will work. |
| Host computer | A computer with Steam installed, signed in, powered on, and able to launch the game | The host performs the rendering and game processing. |
| Network | A private network that lets the Android device and host communicate; use the same network for initial pairing | Steam recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Android and Ethernet for the host computer. |
| Controls | Touch controls or a compatible gamepad | A controller is optional, and support depends on the device, Android version, and game. |
| Game | A title that launches correctly in Steam on the host PC | Some games and input methods have Remote Play limitations, and non-Steam additions are not officially supported. |
Android device and Steam Link requirements
Steam’s Android Steam Link App guidance lists Android 5.0 and newer for compatible phones, tablets, and TVs. Install Steam Link from your device’s Android app store. Steam also provides an Android download route for users who cannot use Google Play.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Android-version compatibility and game compatibility are separate questions. Meeting Android 5.0 is enough to meet the stated client requirement, but it does not make an older phone suitable for every resolution, frame rate, codec, or controller. A device with a stable 5 GHz connection, current system software, and a responsive screen will generally be easier to use than one at the minimum version, yet Steam’s requirement alone does not promise a particular performance level.
Steam Link can show the PC desktop or the Steam interface as well as games. The app’s job is to receive the encoded stream and deliver input; it is not installing the PC executable locally.
Host PC: what must be ready before you connect
On the host computer, install Steam, sign in to the account that owns the game, and leave Steam running. Turn on the PC before starting a session and test the game locally. If the title cannot launch, authenticate, or display correctly on the computer itself, Steam Link cannot fix that underlying problem.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Remote Play uses the host’s graphics hardware, processor, storage, and game settings. Closing unnecessary applications can leave more resources for the game and for video encoding. If the game asks for administrator approval, a separate launcher, or an input method that Remote Play cannot pass through, streaming may be incomplete even though the title appears in your library.
The host’s network connection matters as much as the Android device’s connection. Steam recommends plugging the computer into the router with Ethernet. A wired host avoids making one Wi-Fi radio transmit the game stream and receive other traffic at the same time, reducing a common source of interference and irregular latency.
Network requirements for responsive streaming
Use the right Wi-Fi band
For the Android device, Steam recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. Steam’s network guidance explains that 5 GHz is usually less congested than 2.4 GHz, but its signal does not travel as far or through walls as effectively. Choose 5 GHz when the Android device has a strong signal; move closer to the access point or use 2.4 GHz if distance makes the 5 GHz connection unstable. The relevant recommendations are in Steam’s Suggested Network Settings.

Keep setup on an allowed private network
For first-time pairing, place the Android device and host PC on the same home network. Public hotspots, workplace networks, school or university networks, guest networks, captive-portal Wi-Fi, and networks that isolate clients often block the device-to-device traffic Remote Play needs. A phone connected to cellular data while the PC is on home Wi-Fi is not the same as being on the same local network for setup.

Video streaming, large downloads, cloud backups, and other active devices can consume capacity or add queueing delay. Pause heavy transfers while playing and keep the router and Android device away from sources of radio interference. A fast internet subscription does not remove a problem inside your home network; Remote Play responsiveness is dominated by the path between the host and client.
Firewall ports when the host is invisible
If Steam Link cannot find the computer, first confirm that Steam is open and signed in and that both devices are on a network that permits local traffic. Steam’s Remote Play documentation lists these ports for streaming traffic: UDP 27031 and 27036, plus TCP 27036 and 27037. Allow Steam through the host’s firewall rather than disabling the firewall entirely. The official troubleshooting details are in the Steam Remote Play support FAQ.

Touch controls versus a physical controller
Touch controls let you start playing without buying another device. They are practical for turn-based games, menus, strategy titles, and short sessions, but virtual buttons can obscure the screen and provide less tactile feedback for games that depend on precise analog movement or rapid combinations.
A physical gamepad is optional rather than a requirement. Steam lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile for its Android app. Connection can be Bluetooth or wired depending on the controller and Android device. Model availability and Android support can change, so check the controller maker’s current compatibility information before purchasing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Control method | Strengths | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Android touch controls | No extra hardware; works immediately in supported interfaces | Less precise for action games; overlays can cover game content; some titles do not map every input well. |
| Bluetooth controller | Wireless comfort and familiar console-style controls | Requires pairing and battery power; latency and button mapping vary by model and game. |
| Wired or USB-connected controller | Avoids Bluetooth pairing and can reduce one source of wireless contention | Needs the correct cable, adapter, and Android support; limits freedom of movement. |
If a controller does not respond, open Steam Big Picture on the host and verify that Steam detects it there. A game can still reject an input method that Steam recognizes, particularly when it expects raw input or a controller class that Remote Play does not support.

Step-by-step setup
- Prepare the host. Turn on the computer, launch Steam, sign in, and verify that the game starts normally on the PC.
- Prepare the network. Connect the host to the router by Ethernet if possible. Connect the Android device to the same private network, preferably the 5 GHz band when signal strength is good.
- Install Steam Link. Download the free app from the Android app store, or use Steam’s supplied Android download option if Google Play is unavailable.
- Open Steam Link and pair. Follow the app’s on-screen connection process, select the detected host computer, and enter any pairing code it displays on the PC.
- Run the connection test. Let Steam Link complete its check before changing advanced quality settings. A successful pairing confirms reachability, not that every game or controller will be compatible.
- Choose controls. Continue with touch controls or pair/connect a gamepad. If you use a controller, confirm that Steam Big Picture sees it before launching the game.
- Launch the game. Select the title from the Steam library shown in Steam Link. The PC launches and renders it; the Android device receives the stream.
- Adjust only after testing. Play for several minutes, then use the performance overlay and quality controls if you see delay, dropped frames, or image breakup.
Game and input compatibility: what “works” really means
A game that runs on the host PC is the correct starting point, but it is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Steam documents limitations involving some old graphics technologies, applications that request elevated permissions, raw-input behavior, and particular controller categories. These issues can appear as a black window, missing mouse or keyboard input, unusable menus, or a game that launches but cannot be controlled properly.
Games added to Steam as non-Steam shortcuts may stream in some cases, but Steam identifies that use as not officially supported. Compatibility can also differ between the desktop interface and the game itself: the controller may navigate Big Picture while the title expects a different input API. Check the game’s own control settings and test every essential action before relying on it for a long session.
Virtual-reality games have an additional requirement: the host still needs the appropriate VR hardware and software. Steam’s Android app wording says it can let you “spectate VR games” from the TV, which is different from turning an Android phone into a VR headset.

Steam Link cannot find the PC
- Confirm the host is powered on, Steam is running, and the correct account is signed in.
- Put both devices on the same private network and disable guest-network or client-isolation modes.
- Check that the operating system firewall allows Steam and the Remote Play ports listed above.
- Remove captive-portal Wi-Fi, workplace restrictions, or other network controls that block local device discovery.
The picture stutters or controls feel delayed
- Open Steam Link’s streaming performance overlay to see whether the variable time is network-related.
- Connect the host by Ethernet and move the Android device closer to the 5 GHz access point.
- Pause other downloads and streams, then test again with fewer wireless devices active.
- Reduce stream quality to Balanced or Fast if the overlay points to network variation. Steam recommends these settings as a troubleshooting step.
The game launches but input fails
- Check Steam Big Picture for controller detection and correct button mapping.
- Try touch controls or a different supported controller to isolate a device-specific problem.
- Look for raw-input, elevated-permission, or game-specific controller limitations; a Steam-recognized controller is not proof that every title accepts it.
- For a non-Steam shortcut, expect less predictable behavior because Steam does not officially support that configuration.
The image is visible but the game is unusable
Test the title directly on the host, lower demanding graphics settings there, and verify that no launcher or permission prompt is waiting behind the streamed window. If only one game fails while others work, treat it as a game or input compatibility issue rather than an Android installation problem.
What you pay for—and what you do not
The Steam Link Android app itself is free. You do not buy a separate Android copy of each PC game; you use the license already associated with your Steam account while the host computer runs the title. A controller is an optional hardware expense, and your existing router and host PC determine whether the stream is practical. Steam’s official requirements do not state a universal internet-speed number, so do not treat any single bandwidth figure as a guaranteed threshold.
