To play Mario Kart World online, you need a Nintendo Switch 2, the game, an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Install the current game update before using internet features, and make sure everyone joining a session is running the same software version.
You do not need an Ethernet cable, a compatible USB camera, or the Joy-Con 2 Wheel for ordinary online racing. Ethernet equipment belongs to Nintendo’s separate wired LAN mode, while the camera and wheel are optional accessories.

Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 game. A standard Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite is not the platform identified for this title, so check that you are using the newer console before troubleshooting accounts or networking.

You need access to the game itself, either physically or digitally. The game must be installed or inserted on the Switch 2 you use to connect.
Internet access
Online races use an internet connection. Nintendo does not state that Wi-Fi is insufficient; ordinary online play can use a suitable Wi-Fi network. A wired connection is an option for a different local mode, not a prerequisite for connecting to online matchmaking.
Nintendo Account
Your player profile must be associated with a Nintendo Account. This account identifies you to Nintendo’s online services and is separate from simply having a user profile on the console.
Nintendo Switch Online membership
Nintendo requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for the game’s online features. Nintendo’s product page states: “Internet, Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account required for online features, including GameChat.” The Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ also lists internet access and a Nintendo Account among the service requirements.

The current game update
Nintendo’s update support page says an update released June 30, 2026 must be installed to use internet features. Because a later update may replace it, check Nintendo’s How to Update Mario Kart World page for the currently required version. Every person in the same session must be running the same software version.
What is not required for a normal online race
- Ethernet equipment: An Ethernet cable, wired router, and network switch are for wired LAN play. They are not listed as requirements for standard online matchmaking.
- USB camera: Nintendo mentions a compatible USB camera for video features. It is optional and does not determine whether you can race online.
- Joy-Con 2 Wheel: This is an optional control accessory. Standard compatible controllers are sufficient.
- A television: A display is useful for docked play, but Nintendo’s ordinary online prerequisite list does not require a television. A television or monitor appears in the separate wired-LAN equipment list.
Online, local wireless, and LAN modes compared
Mario Kart World has several ways to play with other people. Choosing the correct mode prevents you from buying LAN hardware when you only want internet matchmaking.
| Mode | Where players are | Player capacity stated by Nintendo | Network and membership needs | Hardware notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online play | Players connect over the internet, whether nearby or far away | Up to 24 players | Internet access, Nintendo Account, Nintendo Switch Online membership, and matching game versions | Wi-Fi can be used; special Ethernet hardware is not required |
| Same-console multiplayer | Players share one Switch 2 | 2–4 players on one system | No Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for this local mode | Use the controllers supported by the console; no network equipment is required |
| Wireless Play | Players use nearby consoles connected locally | Not stated on the cited Nintendo support page | Local wireless connection; the online-membership requirement does not apply to this local mode | Each participant needs access to a compatible Switch 2 system; Nintendo’s cited page does not establish the per-player game-copy rule |
| LAN Play | Nearby consoles connected through a wired local network | 2–24 players, with up to two players per console | Uses local network equipment rather than Nintendo’s online matchmaking; the online-membership requirement is for online features | Docked Switch 2 consoles, Ethernet cables, a wired router, a display, and possibly a network switch |
Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions describe the local and LAN options. The number of game copies required for every Wireless Play arrangement is not specified in that support information, so check the mode’s on-screen instructions for your particular setup rather than assuming that one copy will work for every console.
How to get online for the first time
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet. Join a working Wi-Fi network from the console’s network settings. If the console cannot reach other online services, fix that connection before opening the game.
- Sign in to the correct user. On the Switch 2 HOME screen, select the user profile linked to your Nintendo Account. A local profile that has never been linked will not satisfy the account requirement.
- Confirm Nintendo Switch Online status. Use the Nintendo eShop or your Nintendo Account settings to verify that the selected account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If the game displays a membership prompt, check the account and membership rather than buying networking hardware.
- Update the software. From HOME, highlight Mario Kart World, open its options, and choose the internet update command. Allow the download and installation to finish, then restart the game if requested. Nintendo’s update page is the authority for the current version and any date-specific requirement.
- Start an online mode. Open the game’s multiplayer or online menu and choose the internet-based option. Follow the prompts to join a room, matchmake, or invite other players.
- Have everyone check versions before joining. A friend who has not installed the same update can be blocked even when their internet and membership are working. Update every participating console first.
Understanding the 24-player limit
Nintendo advertises online play for up to 24 players. That is the stated maximum for the online mode, not a promise that every race or room will automatically contain 24 people. Matchmaking, room settings, and how many players are available at a given time determine the actual field.

When wired LAN makes sense
LAN Play is useful when several consoles are in one place and you want a wired local network instead of internet matchmaking. It is a separate setup from ordinary online play.
Equipment Nintendo lists
- A Nintendo Switch 2 console and its dock for each participating system
- A copy of Mario Kart World
- An Ethernet cable for each wired connection
- A television or monitor
- A wired router
- A networking switch if the router does not provide enough wired ports for the number of consoles
Nintendo says the Switch 2 must be docked to use wired connectivity. Plan the number of router or switch ports before the event: the required network-switch hardware depends on how many consoles you intend to connect. Nintendo lists LAN Play for 2–24 players and allows up to two players per console.

What LAN does not mean
LAN Play is not a way to avoid owning a Switch 2 or the game, and it is not the same as plugging one console directly into an Ethernet cable for online matchmaking. If you simply want to race people over the internet, use the console’s normal internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online membership instead.

Troubleshooting common connection problems
The game says online features are unavailable
Check the three account-side requirements first: the console is online, the active user is linked to a Nintendo Account, and that account has Nintendo Switch Online. Then install the latest game update. Nintendo specifically ties the June 30, 2026 update requirement to internet features, but the support page may now list a newer release.
You can connect, but cannot join a friend
Compare the software versions on every console. Nintendo requires everyone playing together to use the same version. Have all players close the game, install the offered update, and try the room again. If one player is using a different user profile, confirm that the profile with the membership is the one launching the game.
Wi-Fi works for other devices but the race disconnects
Move the console closer to the wireless access point, reduce competing traffic, and test again. Restarting the router and Switch 2 can clear a temporary connection failure. An Ethernet cable may improve a local network, but buying LAN equipment is not a prerequisite established for standard online play.

Verify that every Switch 2 is docked, each dock is connected by Ethernet, and all cables lead to the same wired router or network switch. Check that the switch has enough active ports and that the router is powered. A Wi-Fi-only connection does not satisfy Nintendo’s described wired-LAN arrangement.
Best Value
- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
A camera or wheel is not working
Neither accessory controls access to online racing. Remove the USB camera or Joy-Con 2 Wheel from your troubleshooting checklist and first confirm the console, account, membership, internet, and update requirements.
What you may need to buy
If you are starting from nothing, the essential purchases are the Nintendo Switch 2, a copy of Mario Kart World, and Nintendo Switch Online. Current prices, membership tiers, taxes, and regional offers change and are not established by the cited support pages, so check Nintendo’s store and account screens for the amount applicable to your country.
For ordinary online play, do not add an Ethernet cable, wired router, USB camera, or Joy-Con 2 Wheel unless you have a specific reason to use those accessories. Ethernet hardware becomes relevant only when you choose the wired LAN mode and need to connect multiple docked consoles in one location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line
The shortest path to an online race is: use a Nintendo Switch 2, launch an updated copy of Mario Kart World with a Nintendo Account, connect to the internet, and make sure that account has Nintendo Switch Online. Keep every player on the same software version. Reserve docks, Ethernet cables, a wired router, and possibly a network switch for LAN Play, and treat the camera and Joy-Con 2 Wheel as optional extras.
