To play Half-Life: Alyx, you generally need a Windows PC that meets the game’s minimum specs, a SteamVR-compatible VR headset, and tracked VR controllers. Steam lists Windows 10, a Core i5-7500 or Ryzen 5 1600, 12 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB of VRAM as minimum PC requirements. Valve also currently says its Steam Frame can stream the game from a PC or run it standalone; that is a specific, time-sensitive exception to the usual PC-connected setup.
What do I need to play Half-Life: Alyx?
For the standard PC VR setup, you need the game on Steam, a PC that meets at least the listed minimum requirements, and VR hardware that works with SteamVR. The Steam listing marks Half-Life: Alyx as VR-only and lists tracked controller support, so a conventional monitor-and-keyboard setup is not enough to play it as intended.

- A Windows 10 PC meeting the game’s minimum specification.
- A SteamVR-compatible headset.
- Tracked VR controllers and any tracking or connection hardware required by that headset.
Valve’s current Half-Life: Alyx VR page also describes Steam Frame as able to stream the game from a gaming PC or run it standalone. Treat that as a Steam Frame-specific claim, not a general feature of VR headsets; check Valve’s page for the current setup details before buying.

What PC specs do I need for Half-Life: Alyx?
Steam’s listing gives these as the game’s minimum PC requirements, not as a guarantee of a particular image quality or refresh rate:

| Component | Listed minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580, with 6 GB VRAM |
| VR support | SteamVR |
These figures come from the Steam store listing. Meeting the minimum is a baseline for compatibility, not evidence that a system will sustain high refresh rates with every headset or graphics setting.
Minimum specs are not high-refresh specifications
Steam Support’s Alyx performance guidance notes that complex VR gameplay can keep an eight-core CPU and a 12 GB GPU completely busy at refresh rates up to 144 Hz, and points users toward advanced performance options. That is performance context, not a replacement minimum or a promise that all PCs and headsets can reach 144 Hz.

Can I play Half-Life: Alyx with my VR headset?
Valve’s broad rule is that computer-connected VR equipment that works with SteamVR works with Half-Life: Alyx. Its VR page says: “If you have VR hardware that works with a computer, then it works with SteamVR.” The practical check is whether your headset and its required controllers and tracking system work with SteamVR, rather than whether the headset carries a particular brand name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat rule does not mean every model has the same controllers, tracking, cables, or setup requirements. Steam lists tracked-controller support, and Valve’s page shows input styles ranging from finger tracking to trigger-based controllers. Verify the exact headset’s SteamVR support and included hardware before purchase.

Do I need a Valve Index?
No. Valve Index is one compatible option, not a stated requirement. Valve’s SteamVR compatibility guidance covers computer-connected VR hardware that works with SteamVR; the Index is not the only way to meet that rule.
Some details often associated with VR apply specifically to the Index. Steam Support’s Index compatibility information says its headset uses a DisplayPort 1.2-or-higher connection and works with original Vive Base Stations or 2.0 versions. It also identifies Vive and Vive Pro wands, as well as Valve Index controllers, as compatible with the Index headset. These are Index-specific details, not requirements for every SteamVR headset.

Which headset and accessories should I choose?
There is no universal accessory list: the required tracking equipment, controllers, and connections depend on the headset. Compare the complete setup, not just the headset itself.

- SteamVR support: Confirm the exact model works with SteamVR and with your PC setup.
- Controllers: Check whether tracked controllers are included and whether their input style suits you.
- Tracking hardware: Find out whether the system needs separate base stations or uses another tracking arrangement.
- Connections: Confirm your PC has the required ports and that the headset’s connection method is supported.
- Complete kit: Check what the bundle includes; a headset sold without required controllers or tracking components may not be a complete playable setup.
For example, the Index connection and base-station information above applies to that headset. Do not assume that a different headset needs DisplayPort or Lighthouse base stations. If you already own VR hardware, check its exact SteamVR support and included components before buying replacements.

Steam Frame: a distinct PC-streaming or standalone option
Valve’s current VR page says Steam Frame can play Half-Life: Alyx by streaming from a gaming PC using its included wireless adapter, or run the game standalone without a host PC. That statement is specific to Steam Frame and may change as product and software details evolve. Do not infer that other headsets can run the game without a PC.
Can you play Half-Life: Alyx sitting down?
Yes. Valve lists both roomscale and sitting/standing play arrangements. Roomscale is an option, not a universal requirement. Valve also lists teleport, shift, and continuous locomotion, giving players movement choices rather than requiring one method.
These options describe supported play arrangements and movement styles; they do not establish that every setup will feel comfortable for every player. Check that your available space and chosen headset setup suit the way you plan to play.

Does Half-Life: Alyx need a gaming PC?
For a conventional computer-connected SteamVR headset, yes: you need a PC that meets the game’s requirements. Valve’s current Steam Frame page claim is the exception it describes, offering either PC streaming or standalone play. That capability should not be generalized to other VR hardware.
