What You Need to Play Games on GeForce NOW (2026): Membership, Devices, and Internet

You do not need a high-end gaming PC to use GeForce NOW. The game runs on NVIDIA’s cloud hardware and is streamed to a supported computer, phone, tablet, television, handheld, browser, or immersive display. To play, you need an NVIDIA account, a GeForce NOW membership, a supported endpoint, an internet connection that meets the service’s speed and latency targets, and access to a supported game.

A membership does not automatically include every game. You normally must own or buy the title through a connected store, although NVIDIA also supports hundreds of popular free-to-play games. The exact plan benefits, device list, game catalog, and country availability can change, so check NVIDIA’s current pages for your region before subscribing or buying hardware.

The essential checklist

Before troubleshooting performance or shopping for equipment, verify these five requirements:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. NVIDIA account: GeForce NOW is an account-based cloud service.
  2. A membership: Choose the available Free, Performance, or Ultimate tier in your country. The tier controls the cloud gaming hardware and features you can use.
  3. A supported device or browser: Requirements differ between Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, televisions, handhelds, and immersive displays.
  4. A suitable connection: NVIDIA specifies bandwidth targets for different resolutions and frame rates and requires latency below 80 milliseconds to an NVIDIA data center.
  5. A supported game and input method: Own or purchase the game through a connected store, or choose a supported free-to-play title. A TV session requires a supported gamepad.

The local device decodes and displays the stream; it does not need to render the game like a conventional gaming PC. It still needs a compatible operating system, app or browser, display, and input hardware.

How GeForce NOW works

When you start a game, NVIDIA assigns a cloud gaming rig to your session. That rig runs the game, while your device sends controller, keyboard, or mouse input to the service and receives a live video stream. Your local machine therefore avoids the large CPU, GPU, memory, and storage requirements associated with installing the game locally.

Cloud rendering does not remove every requirement. The endpoint must be able to run the GeForce NOW app or a supported browser, decode the incoming stream, and maintain a responsive connection. A fast connection with high latency or frequent wireless interference can feel worse than a slower but stable connection. Membership, server availability, game support, and local device limitations also affect the result.

Choose a membership tier

NVIDIA’s current FAQ describes three membership levels. Names, limits, queue behavior, pricing, and availability are subject to change by country and date, so treat the table as a guide to the tiers rather than a permanent price list.

Tier Cloud hardware and advertised capability Important qualification
Free Basic cloud rigs; specifications and performance can vary. Experience depends on the game and server availability. Current limits and access conditions are set by NVIDIA for your region.
Performance RTX cloud rigs, with support described by NVIDIA as up to 1440p at 60 frames per second. “Up to” is not a guarantee for every game, device, network, location, or session.
Ultimate First access to RTX 5080 virtual gaming rigs for most games, subject to availability. NVIDIA describes support of up to 5K at 120 frames per second, or 360 frames per second at 1080p in competitive gaming mode. The maximum depends on the game, display, device, mode, data-center capacity, and connection. It is not a promise that every title will run at those settings.

Compare plans on three practical questions: which cloud rig you receive, what session or feature limits apply, and whether the tier is sold in your location. A more expensive tier cannot compensate for an unsupported device, a high-latency route, or a game that is absent from the catalog.

Get access to the game you want to play

NVIDIA states in its official FAQ: “Yes, you need to own or purchase a game from one of the supported game stores before playing it on GeForce NOW.” Connected stores named by NVIDIA include Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG, Epic Games Store, Steam, and Xbox. You link the relevant store account, then launch a title that GeForce NOW supports.

There are two important exceptions to the simple “buy the game” rule. First, NVIDIA supports hundreds of popular free-to-play games, so you can play those without buying a paid copy. Second, store and title availability can vary by country because of licensing and content restrictions. A game in your PC library is not automatically playable in every region or on every storefront.

Check a specific title before subscribing

  1. Search NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW game catalog for the exact title and edition.
  2. Confirm the storefront where you own it, such as Steam or Epic Games Store.
  3. Check whether that storefront and title are available in your country.
  4. Verify that the game supports the input method and device you plan to use.

If a title is missing, buying it from another store does not guarantee access. Catalog support can change, so check again when you are ready to play.

Supported devices and operating systems

NVIDIA maintains separate requirements for each platform. The following examples come from its current system-requirements page, accessed in 2026; they are not a blanket approval for every device in a product family.

Endpoint Published example requirement What to verify
Windows PC Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. Use the current GeForce NOW app requirements for your Windows release, graphics support, display, and input devices.
Mac macOS 10.15 or later. Confirm the Mac model, operating-system version, display target, and whether the app or browser supports your chosen quality mode.
Chromebook At least 4 GB of RAM. Check the supported ChromeOS channel and browser requirements; not every Chromebook feature or display mode is identical.
Android phone or tablet Android 7.0 or later with OpenGL ES 2.0 or higher. Verify the exact model, app compatibility, controller support, screen resolution, and cellular or Wi-Fi stability.
iPhone or iPad iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later. Check the current supported access method and use a compatible gamepad for gameplay.
Browser access Only browsers and operating systems listed by NVIDIA. A browser that works on one operating system is not proof that it works on another. Use NVIDIA’s current compatibility list.
Televisions, streaming devices, handhelds, Android TV, Chromecast, and immersive displays Selected models and platforms are listed by NVIDIA. Check the exact model number and app availability. Support for one television or handheld does not extend automatically to the entire product line.

Linux users should consult NVIDIA’s current browser and operating-system list rather than assume that every distribution is supported. The same caution applies to smart TVs: firmware, region, app-store availability, and controller pairing can differ even between similar models.

Controllers, keyboard, and mouse requirements

Your input device depends on where you play. NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers among supported gamepads, but a controller is not mandatory for every setup. Many PC games can use a keyboard and mouse when the endpoint and title support them.

  • Customize your menu button with more than 25 choices. Launch your favorite app, enable AI upscaling, or mute your sound, or more! Different options can be applied to up to 3 actions: single press, double press, long press.
  • Control your home entertainment center with SHIELD Remote’s built in IR blaster. Control volume, power, or input source.

Television play

NVIDIA specifically requires a supported gamepad for TV gameplay. Pair the controller with the TV or streaming device before launching the session, and confirm that the device recognizes it. A keyboard alone is not a substitute for the required TV gamepad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone and tablet play

A phone’s touchscreen is difficult to use for extended sessions. NVIDIA recommends a gamepad clip for a physical controller and says the Android app’s virtual gamepad is not recommended for long-term gameplay. Choose a controller that your specific phone, tablet, and operating system can pair with reliably.

iPhone and iPad play

NVIDIA says keyboard and mouse support on iPhone and iPad is limited to navigation tasks and is not recommended for gameplay. Use a supported gamepad for the actual game, even if you use the touchscreen or keyboard to move through menus.

Internet requirements by streaming quality

NVIDIA’s current system-requirements page gives these bandwidth targets for particular streaming modes:

Target stream NVIDIA-published bandwidth Qualification
HD, up to 60 FPS 15 Mbps Requirement for this target, not a guarantee of smooth play on its own.
FHD at 60 FPS 25 Mbps Applies to the listed FHD mode and supported platform.
QHD at 120 FPS 35 Mbps Requires a compatible device, display, game, membership feature, and connection.
4K at 120 FPS 45 Mbps Available only on applicable platforms and modes; the display must support the target.
5K at 120 FPS 65 Mbps Listed for applicable platforms and modes, not as a universal service guarantee.

These are product requirements published by NVIDIA, not independent measurements or promises about image quality. Your connection should have spare capacity beyond the target so ordinary household traffic does not consume the entire stream budget.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Latency and connection type

NVIDIA requires less than 80 milliseconds of latency from an NVIDIA data center. Latency measures the time input takes to reach the cloud service and for the response to return; bandwidth measures how much data can be delivered. Both matter, as does consistency. Sudden wireless interference, congestion, or packet loss can cause stutter even when a speed test reports enough Mbps.

NVIDIA recommends a hardwired Ethernet connection or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Place the device close enough to the router for a stable signal, avoid congested wireless locations, and pause large downloads or uploads while playing. Then use NVIDIA’s network test or in-app guidance to check the route to its data center, not just the advertised speed of your broadband plan.

First-time setup: an exact sequence

  1. Create or sign in to an NVIDIA account. Use the account you intend to keep associated with your membership and connected game stores.
  2. Select a membership. Review the current Free, Performance, and Ultimate terms shown for your country, including any session or feature limits.
  3. Prepare the endpoint. Install the GeForce NOW app where NVIDIA supports an app, or open a listed browser on a supported operating system.
  4. Connect the network. Prefer Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Confirm that your measured bandwidth matches the resolution and frame-rate target you plan to use and that latency is below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center.
  5. Pair input hardware. Connect a gamepad for TV play; use a gamepad on mobile devices for sustained gameplay. On supported computers, connect a keyboard and mouse if the game uses them.
  6. Link a store account. Sign in to the store where you own the supported title. Keep the store credentials separate from your NVIDIA password and use the official sign-in flow.
  7. Launch the title. Search for the game in GeForce NOW, select the supported storefront, and allow the cloud session to start.
  8. Adjust only after testing. Start with a conservative resolution or frame-rate target if the stream is unstable. Increase quality after confirming that latency, bandwidth, and display support are all adequate.

Diagnose common setup failures

Symptom Likely check Action
The game cannot be found The title, edition, storefront, or country may not be supported. Search NVIDIA’s current catalog and confirm the exact store account and regional availability. Do not assume ownership alone is sufficient.
You can sign in but cannot launch on a TV A supported gamepad may not be paired or recognized. Pair a listed controller with the TV or streaming device, then restart the session.
Video looks blurry or the stream disconnects Bandwidth, Wi-Fi stability, or the selected quality target may be insufficient. Switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, stop competing traffic, run the network test, and select a lower target if necessary.
Controls feel delayed Latency to the NVIDIA data center may be 80 ms or higher, or the route may be unstable. Test from the location where you play, move closer to the router, use Ethernet, and check the data-center latency rather than relying on a generic speed test.
The app or browser will not install or load The operating system, browser, device model, or firmware may be outside NVIDIA’s list. Compare the exact version and model with NVIDIA’s current system-requirements page. A newer-looking device is not automatically supported.
Keyboard and mouse do not control mobile gameplay On iPhone and iPad, NVIDIA limits those peripherals to navigation. Use a supported gamepad for gameplay, and reserve keyboard or mouse input for menus where supported.

Which setup makes sense for you?

You already own a basic laptop

Check whether it runs a supported Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux browser, or app configuration. If it meets the endpoint requirement and your network reaches the target bandwidth and latency, there is no general need to buy a gaming PC. Your main decisions are membership tier, supported games, and input hardware.

You want to play on a television

Verify the exact TV or connected streaming device in NVIDIA’s list, install the supported app if available, and budget for a compatible gamepad because TV play requires one. Test the television’s Wi-Fi or use Ethernet where the hardware permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want portable play

For Android, check Android 7.0 or later, OpenGL ES 2.0 or higher, and the exact model’s compatibility. For iPhone or iPad, check iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later. In either case, a physical gamepad is the practical choice for longer sessions; mobile data performance can vary, so test the connection in the places where you will actually play.

You want the highest resolution or frame rate

Start by verifying that your membership exposes the relevant mode, then confirm that the device, display, game, and connection support it. The 4K, 5K, 120-FPS, and 360-FPS figures published by NVIDIA are maximum targets for applicable configurations, not universal outcomes. A stable lower target is preferable to a nominal maximum that your route cannot sustain.

Final pre-subscription checklist

  • Your country offers the membership tier you want.
  • The exact game and storefront are supported in your region.
  • Your endpoint and operating-system version appear on NVIDIA’s current compatibility list.
  • Your display supports the resolution and frame rate you intend to request.
  • Your measured bandwidth meets the matching NVIDIA target: 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS, 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS, or 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 FPS, where applicable.
  • Latency to an NVIDIA data center is below 80 ms and the connection is stable.
  • You have a supported gamepad for TV play and preferably for mobile play.

If every item checks out, GeForce NOW can let a modest local device play supported PC games without owning a high-end gaming computer. The service still depends on the cloud tier, catalog, endpoint, input hardware, and network working together; verify each one rather than treating any single specification as a guarantee.
