To play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2, plan for at least 79.1 GB of available storage, additional room for mandatory updates, a Nintendo Account, internet access and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for online modes. You also need an Activision account, and Activision may require a mobile phone number linked to it.
Switch 2 includes 256 GB of UFS internal storage, but some capacity is reserved for the operating system. If the remaining space is not enough, Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB; older microSD and microSDXC cards are not the expansion format specified for Switch 2.

At a glance: the requirements
| Requirement | What you need | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Game storage | 79.1 GB free space | Figure shown by the Australian Nintendo eShop listing in 2026; updates can require more space. |
| Built-in storage | 256 GB UFS | A portion is reserved for system software, so the usable amount is lower. |
| Expansion storage | microSD Express, up to 2 TB | Switch 2 specifies microSD Express; do not assume a standard microSD card will work. |
| Online multiplayer | Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership | Nintendo says online play modes require a paid membership. |
| Accounts | Nintendo Account and Activision account | A mobile phone number linked to the Activision account may be requested. |
| Internet | Internet connection | No game-specific minimum Mbps number is published in the cited Nintendo information. |
That list covers the practical entry requirements for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for Nintendo Switch 2. The details below explain how much headroom to leave, which network setup is sensible and what to do when installation or account linking fails.

How much storage does Call of Duty take on Switch 2?
The current Nintendo eShop listing gives the game a required-space figure of 79.1 GB. That is the number to use when checking the console before installation. It is not a promise that the game will never consume more: the listing warns that “Additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates.” A large update can need temporary working space in addition to the installed files, so treating 79.1 GB as the absolute maximum is likely to cause an installation or patch failure.

What the 79.1 GB figure means
The 79.1 GB value comes from the Australian Nintendo eShop listing retrieved in 2026. Nintendo can revise the listing as the software changes, and required space can differ by regional listing or edition. Check the eShop page displayed for your own Nintendo Account immediately before downloading. If that page shows a different value, use the newer regional figure rather than the number in this guide.
How much space is actually available internally?
Nintendo lists 256 GB of UFS internal storage for Switch 2. That is the capacity of the storage hardware, not the amount available for games. System software and other reserved data occupy part of it, leaving less free space after setup. The console can therefore hold the game internally only when the remaining free space comfortably exceeds the current requirement and leaves room for update staging.
When a microSD Express card is the better choice
Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards for Switch 2 storage expansion, with capacities up to 2 TB. The Express requirement matters: a card that fits physically but uses an older microSD interface is not the format identified for Switch 2 expansion. Choose a capacity based on your whole library, not only this one title. A card is especially useful when the console already contains several large games, screenshots, downloadable content or system captures.

Do not buy a card solely because its packaging says “microSD.” Confirm that it is explicitly microSD Express and that its capacity is within Nintendo’s stated limit. A 2 TB ceiling is a maximum supported capacity, not a requirement; smaller Express cards can be appropriate for a single-game installation and a modest library.

How to prepare storage before installing
- Open the console’s data-management screen. From the HOME Menu, use System Settings and the data or storage-management section to view free internal space and installed software.
- Compare free space with the current eShop requirement. Look at the regional listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, not an old screenshot or a third-party listing. Start only when the available space is meaningfully above the displayed requirement.
- Remove or archive software you can restore. Delete games you no longer use or archive them through the console’s storage controls. Save data is handled separately from the game software, so read the on-screen confirmation before deleting anything.
- Install the microSD Express card if needed. Power down as Nintendo directs, insert the compatible card, then start the console and allow it to format the card if prompted. Formatting erases data already on that card.
- Choose the destination. Set the download location to internal storage or the installed microSD Express card, depending on where you have the most headroom.
- Start the download while connected to power. Large downloads and updates can take time. Avoid interrupting the console during installation or a required update.
- Check free space again after installation. The installed game, update files and other software may leave less room than expected. Keep additional space available for future mandatory patches.
- Recheck after major updates. If an update says there is insufficient space, free storage before retrying instead of repeatedly restarting the download.
The exact menu wording can change with a system update, but the decision is the same: verify the current listing, account for reserved system space and leave a buffer beyond 79.1 GB.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes, if you intend to use the game’s online multiplayer modes. Nintendo’s eShop product information states: “Any online play modes require a paid membership to Nintendo Switch Online.” You also need a Nintendo Account and an internet connection to use the service. A free Nintendo Account by itself does not replace the paid online membership.
Individual and family memberships
Nintendo sells individual and family Nintendo Switch Online plans. The suitable plan depends on who will play and which Nintendo Accounts need access. Prices and availability vary by country and can change, so check Nintendo’s current membership information for your region instead of relying on a fixed price quoted elsewhere. A family plan is relevant only when the participating accounts meet Nintendo’s family-group rules; it does not remove the need for each player to use an eligible Nintendo Account.

What internet connection does Switch 2 need?
The game requires an internet connection for its online modes. Nintendo’s cited information does not publish a game-specific minimum download or upload speed, so there is no defensible Mbps threshold to quote. Use a stable broadband connection with enough consistency for sustained downloads and low interruption during matches.
Wi-Fi connection
Switch 2 supports Wi-Fi 6. Place the console where its wireless signal is strong, avoid competing downloads on the same connection during installation and use the router’s less-congested band when available. A speed test can reveal severe congestion, but a single peak result does not guarantee a stable match; latency, packet loss and repeated dropouts matter as well.
Wired connection through the dock
Nintendo’s technical specifications list a wired LAN port on the dock. Ethernet is a useful option when Wi-Fi is unreliable or the router is far from the console. It can reduce wireless interference, although it cannot fix an overloaded broadband service or a problem at the game’s servers.
| Connection option | Best use | Limit to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 6 | Handheld or flexible room placement | Performance depends on distance, walls, interference and router load. |
| Docked wired LAN | Most consistent local connection for downloads and online play | Requires the console to be docked and connected to the router by Ethernet. |
Which accounts must be created?
Nintendo Account
A Nintendo Account is required to use Nintendo Switch Online. Sign in with the account that owns the membership and that you intend to use for online play. If several people share the console, verify which user profile is connected to which Nintendo Account before purchasing a membership or starting the game.

Activision account
The eShop listing says an Activision account is required and that you must accept Activision’s software terms. Account creation or linking can appear during the first launch rather than during the eShop purchase. Have access to the email address used for the account and complete any verification screen instead of closing it mid-process.
Possible mobile-number requirement
The listing says a mobile phone number linked to the Activision account may be required. That wording means the request is conditional, not a guarantee that every player will see it. If the prompt appears, use a number you control and follow the displayed verification process. If the number is already linked to another account, resolve that account issue through Activision’s account support rather than repeatedly creating new profiles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you play Call of Duty on Switch 2 without internet?
Nintendo documents the internet and paid-membership requirement for online play, but the cited material does not establish offline availability for every mode in this release. Do not assume that all single-player or practice content will work without a connection. Some features may require an initial sign-in, license check, update or Activision account connection even when a mode is not multiplayer.
If offline use is important, check the mode-specific information shown by the game and any current Activision instructions for the Switch 2 version. Plan to complete installation, updates and account linking while online before travelling or losing connectivity.

Digital or physical purchase: what to check
Whichever ownership format you choose, verify the Nintendo eShop information for the exact Switch 2 release and note its required-space figure and update warning. A physical purchase does not make the storage and update caveat disappear; the console may still need substantial space for software, patches or downloadable components. The listing’s 79.1 GB figure is the documented planning number for this release, subject to regional and update changes.
For a digital purchase, ensure the Nintendo Account buying the game has enough storage available before selecting download. For a physical purchase, inspect the package and on-console prompts for any additional download, then use the same storage checklist before inserting the game.
Fixes for common setup problems
“Not enough space” during download or update
- Return to data management and check free internal and microSD Express capacity separately.
- Free more than the exact shortfall; update processes may need temporary working space.
- Confirm that the selected card is microSD Express and correctly recognized by Switch 2.
- Retry the update after closing other software and restarting the console.
Online multiplayer is unavailable
- Confirm that the active Nintendo Account has a current paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Test the console’s internet connection and check for Wi-Fi dropouts.
- If possible, connect the dock to the router by wired LAN.
- Check whether the game is asking for an Activision sign-in, terms acceptance or phone verification.
The Activision link or phone verification fails
- Use the intended Activision account rather than creating a duplicate account.
- Verify the email address and any one-time code before restarting the linking screen.
- Ensure the mobile number can receive the requested verification message and is not already attached to an incompatible account.
- Use Activision’s current account-recovery or support process when the console reports an ownership or linking conflict.
The game works online but downloads are slow
No official game-specific bandwidth minimum is published in the cited Nintendo information. Improve the conditions you can control: pause other large downloads, move closer to the router, use Wi-Fi 6 on a clear channel or switch to the dock’s wired LAN connection. If download speed varies widely while other devices are idle, investigate the broadband connection rather than changing game settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPractical setup plans
| Player situation | Recommended preparation |
|---|---|
| Only a few games, mostly internal storage | Clear enough internal space to exceed 79.1 GB by a comfortable margin and keep room for mandatory updates. |
| Several large games already installed | Use a compatible microSD Express card, then verify the game’s download destination and remaining capacity. |
| Mostly handheld play | Set up reliable Wi-Fi 6 coverage and complete account linking before leaving home. |
| Competitive online play while docked | Use the dock’s wired LAN port when practical, maintain a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and avoid other heavy network traffic. |
| Multiple players in one household | Map each console profile to the correct Nintendo Account and choose an individual or family membership that covers those accounts. |
| Travelling or expecting offline periods | Install all updates and complete Nintendo and Activision sign-ins while online; verify the specific modes you expect to use offline. |
Bottom line for buying and installing
Before purchasing, confirm the current regional listing, then prepare more than 79.1 GB of free space rather than targeting the number exactly. Switch 2’s 256 GB internal UFS capacity may be sufficient after accounting for reserved system storage, but a microSD Express card up to 2 TB provides the supported expansion path. Online multiplayer adds three separate conditions: internet access, a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. The game also requires an Activision account, with mobile-number linking possible during setup.
