A remake can rebuild much more of the game, sometimes from the ground up. The labels are useful clues, not universal technical standards: publishers apply them differently, so check the actual scope, original release, platform, and included content for each edition.
PlayStation describes the PS4 version of Shadow of the Colossus as a remake rebuilt from the ground up. Square Enix calls FINAL FANTASY X | X-2 HD Remaster an HD remaster. Those releases provide a clear contrast, while Demon’s Souls shows why platform lineage must be checked separately from the modern console on which a re-release appears.

Remake and remaster: what the terms usually mean
What a remaster changes
A remaster starts with an existing game and preserves most of its underlying design. The developer may improve image quality, audio, menus, controls, performance, accessibility options, or the way multiple games and downloadable content are packaged. The result can look and feel substantially cleaner, but it remains recognizably the same game: the levels, rules, story structure, and core assets are generally inherited from the earlier release.
FINAL FANTASY X | X-2 HD Remaster is Square Enix’s clearest example. Square Enix uses “HD Remaster” in the official title and identifies Final Fantasy X as a PlayStation 2 game. PlayStation also listed the HD Remaster for PS4 in a 2018 promotion. PlayStation’s 2018 promotion is historical evidence of a PS4 listing, not a guarantee of current store availability, regional editions, or price.
What a remake changes
A remake is a more extensive reconstruction. Developers can replace models, environments, animation, lighting, interfaces, sound, control systems, and other technology while rebuilding the original’s story and progression. Some remakes preserve the original structure closely; others reinterpret encounters, pacing, or presentation. “Remake” therefore signals a larger development effort, but it does not promise that every mechanic or scene is identical to the source game.
PlayStation describes the PS4 Shadow of the Colossus as “rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio” and presents it as a remake. That wording establishes a ground-up rebuild, not a universal definition that every publisher must follow.
Why the labels are not a technical standard
There is no industry rule requiring every company to use “remake” and “remaster” in exactly the same way. Marketing names can emphasize technology, content, or a new audience. A release called a remaster may include more changes than another publisher’s remaster, while a remake may intentionally retain the original’s camera, maps, or combat. Treat the label as a starting point, then inspect the publisher’s description and the edition’s feature list.
How to identify what you are actually buying
Use the following checks for any re-release, especially when a store page uses a short title that does not explain its lineage.
- Read the publisher’s wording. Note whether it says remake, remaster, HD remaster, rebuilt, enhanced, collection, or another term. Copy such wording exactly when comparing editions.
- Find the rebuild scope. “Rebuilt from the ground up” indicates a more comprehensive reconstruction than a presentation upgrade. If the page does not describe the scope, mark that detail as not stated rather than assuming it.
- Trace the original game. Identify the first release and its platform. A PS4 or PS5 product page tells you the modern platform, not automatically the console on which the original appeared.
- List the included content. Check whether the package contains one game, a sequel, both versions, downloadable content, or bonuses. Collection names can hide important differences from a single-game release.
- Check the edition and region. Platforms, storefront listings, language options, physical formats, and availability can change by country and over time.
- Separate historical claims from current facts. A dated promotion or sales announcement proves what was true at that time. Confirm a current store listing before making purchase or availability advice.
Official examples compared
| Release | Official description | Original lineage described by the official source | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) | PlayStation calls it a remake rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and Japan Studio; an official store page lists the PS4 game. | It is presented as a remake of the earlier Shadow of the Colossus associated with PS2. Those official pages do not establish every intermediate version’s role. | Use it as the main example of a large rebuild. Do not infer that all remakes use the same production method. |
| FINAL FANTASY X | X-2 HD Remaster | Square Enix uses the name “HD Remaster.” PlayStation listed the HD Remaster for PS4 in a 2018 promotion. | Square Enix identifies Final Fantasy X as a PS2 title. PlayStation’s promotion is historical. | Use it as the contrasting example of a remaster that retains the original games while updating their presentation and package. |
| Demon’s Souls (PS5) | PlayStation calls the PS5 release a remake “rebuilt from the ground up.” | The original released in Japan in February 2009; the official information does not establish it as a PS2 game. | It demonstrates why a remake can be relevant to this comparison without being a PS2-origin title. |
Shadow of the Colossus: a PS2-origin game rebuilt for PS4
The PS4 edition is the strongest example of a PS2-era game receiving a release explicitly marketed as a remake. PlayStation’s store description credits Bluepoint Games and Japan Studio and uses the phrase “rebuilt from the ground up.” That statement tells you the development scope is broader than a simple resolution or texture upgrade.
When comparing it with the earlier PS2 game, keep three versions distinct: the original game, any earlier re-releases that may exist in a particular market, and the PS4 remake. The PS4 store listing confirms the modern platform and product identity; it does not, by itself, establish the availability of every older edition or guarantee that a particular region still sells the same package.
For a buyer, the practical question is not whether the word “remake” sounds better. It is whether you want the original design in its historical form or a rebuilt interpretation designed for newer hardware. Check screenshots, control descriptions, included extras, and regional storefront details before choosing.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster: what “HD remaster” tells you
Square Enix’s official title places FINAL FANTASY X | X-2 HD Remaster in the remaster category. The package name signals that two related games are being presented together, so it should not be compared with a single-game remake as though the contents were equivalent.
The term “HD” describes the presentation target, not a promise about every technical feature on every platform. A dated PS4 promotion confirms that PlayStation listed the HD Remaster in 2018, but current availability, language support, disc packaging, and digital-store status require a fresh check in the buyer’s region.
If you already own an original release, compare the specific improvements and the package contents rather than assuming that “HD Remaster” means a completely new game. If you want the original PS2 experience, verify whether the edition you are considering is an emulation, a remaster, or another type of re-release.

Demon’s Souls: an adjacent remake that is not established as a PS2 game
Demon’s Souls is useful because it is often discussed alongside modern console remakes, but the official information does not identify it as a PS2 title. PlayStation states that the original launched in Japan in February 2009 and that the PS5 remake arrived in November 2020. Keep that chronology separate from PS2 examples.
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 1.4 million copies sold since November 12, 2020 in an announcement dated September 30, 2021. That is a historical sales figure for the remake, not a current total and not a statistic for PS2 remakes as a category. It cannot be used to estimate how many PS2 games have been remade or how popular remakes are overall.
Which changes matter most to players?
The remake-versus-remaster label does not answer every practical question. Before buying, evaluate the release along these dimensions:
- Visual reconstruction: Determine whether environments, characters, lighting, animation, and effects were rebuilt or merely displayed at a higher resolution.
- Audio: Check whether music, voice acting, sound effects, or audio formats changed. “HD” alone does not specify the audio work.
- Controls and interface: A newer edition may use modern controller conventions or redesign menus. If you want the original feel, look for an explicit control option.
- Game structure: Confirm whether the campaign, levels, encounters, camera, and progression remain intact. A remake can reinterpret these elements even when it follows the same story.
- Content package: Collections may include a sequel or multiple discs; a standalone remake may contain only one game. Compare like with like.
- Platform features: Verify the exact console generation, save compatibility, performance modes, accessibility settings, and required account or network features for your region.
How to compare two editions without relying on marketing language
Create a side-by-side record using four axes: label and rebuild scope; original game and platform lineage; modern platforms and edition contents; and the type of re-release. This prevents a modern platform from being mistaken for the original platform and keeps a collection from being compared with a standalone game.
| Question | Evidence to record | If the page is silent |
|---|---|---|
| How extensive is the rebuild? | Words such as “rebuilt from the ground up,” named developers, or a detailed feature list. | Write “not stated” and avoid calling it a full rebuild. |
| What is the source game? | Original title, first-release platform, and any stated release date. | Do not infer the source platform from the new console. |
| What does the package include? | Game count, sequels, downloadable content, bonuses, and edition name. | Check the regional store or physical package before purchase. |
| Where can it be played now? | Current regional listings for the exact platform and edition. | Treat old promotions and announcements as historical only. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every PS2 re-release is a remaster
A PS2-origin game can later receive a remake, a remaster, a collection, an emulated release, or another enhanced edition. Identify the individual product instead of assigning one category to every version.

Assuming every remake is a PS2 game
Demon’s Souls demonstrates the problem: its original Japan release is dated February 2009, and the official description does not place it on PS2. A remake can belong in the same buying conversation without belonging in a PS2 catalog.
Treating old availability as current
The 2018 PS4 promotion for Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and the 2021 Demon’s Souls sales announcement are dated records. Store listings, regional editions, and prices can change, so verify the present listing for your country.
Using sales of one game as a category trend
The reported figure of more than 1.4 million Demon’s Souls copies was tied to one remake and one reporting date. No category-wide total for PS2 remakes or remasters is established here.
What is and is not established about the wider PS2 catalog
The examples above are illustrations, not a complete worldwide list. The official descriptions above establish the labels, selected platforms, lineage details, and dates for these releases, but they do not establish every PS2 game that later received a remake or remaster. Regional licensing, storefront changes, and differently named editions make a universal current catalog difficult to state without checking each title individually.

For a reliable shortlist, begin with the publisher’s page for the exact edition, record the original platform separately from the modern one, and note the date of every availability or sales claim. That method remains useful even when a title’s marketing name changes between regions.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Choose a remaster when you want the original game’s structure with updated presentation, a consolidated package, or access on newer hardware.
- Choose a remake when you are interested in a substantially rebuilt interpretation and are comfortable checking how its mechanics, pacing, and content differ from the source.
- Choose the original release when historical accuracy, original controls, or compatibility with an older collection matters more than modern presentation.
- Compare editions directly when a title has multiple re-releases. Confirm the source platform, included games, current platform, region, and publisher’s stated scope before paying.
