Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive is an Amazon S3 storage class for information you expect to retain for years but read less than once a year. It offers very low storage cost in exchange for delayed access: you must request a restore, typically wait up to 12 hours with Standard retrieval or up to 48 hours with Bulk retrieval, and pay attention to minimum-retention, request, metadata and restore charges.

What S3 Glacier Deep Archive is

Deep Archive keeps objects in Amazon S3 for long-term retention. It is not a separate, older “Glacier” service that moves files outside S3; buckets, object names, access controls and S3 APIs remain the operating model.

AWS recommends Deep Archive for archive data accessed less than once a year. Typical uses include multi-year records retention, compliance archives, backup repositories and disaster-recovery copies. AWS lists 99.999999999% durability for its S3 Glacier classes; that is an AWS service specification, not an independent test result.

The trade-off is deliberate: storage is inexpensive, but the data is not available for real-time reads.

When Deep Archive fits—and when it does not

Good candidates

  • Records that must be retained for several years and are rarely consulted.
  • Backups or disaster-recovery data where a recovery process can wait hours.
  • Compliance or legal archives with predictable retention periods.
  • Large datasets that can remain untouched for at least the required minimum duration.

Look elsewhere when access is urgent

Deep Archive is a poor fit for active content, interactive applications, frequent analytics, or incidents that require data within seconds or minutes. A cheaper storage rate can be outweighed by retrieval and request charges if you regularly read large volumes or many objects.

How it compares with the other S3 Glacier classes

Choose among the classes by combining read frequency, acceptable wait time, retrieval economics, retention period and object layout. AWS describes the following selection guide; the times are typical expectations, not a guarantee for every request.

Storage class Typical access pattern Typical availability after retrieval request Minimum storage duration Best fit
S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval About quarterly Milliseconds 90 days Rarely read data that still needs immediate access
S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval About once or twice yearly Minutes to 12 hours, depending on tier 90 days Archive data where minutes-to-hours access is acceptable; AWS explicitly describes free bulk retrieval for this class
S3 Glacier Deep Archive Less than once yearly Standard: typically within 12 hours; Bulk: typically within 48 hours 180 days Long-lived archives where the lowest storage rate matters more than fast recovery

Deep Archive has no Expedited retrieval tier. AWS’s comparison also presents Deep Archive as an annual-access option with a typical nine-to-48-hour range, while its descriptive guidance says less than once a year; treat both as planning guidance rather than a service-level promise.

How long Deep Archive retrieval takes

Standard retrieval

Standard retrieval typically completes within 12 hours. Use it when a recovery or investigation can wait most of a business day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bulk retrieval

Bulk retrieval typically completes within 48 hours and costs less than Standard retrieval. “Bulk” does not mean free for Deep Archive; AWS’s explicit free-bulk-retrieval statement applies to Glacier Flexible Retrieval, not Deep Archive.

Large restore sets

AWS cautions that restores involving tens of millions of objects or hundreds of terabytes can take longer than the usual estimates. Plan capacity, concurrency and recovery sequencing instead of promising that every object will meet the per-object typical time.

How to restore a Deep Archive object

A restore makes a temporary, readable copy while leaving the original object in Deep Archive.

  1. Submit a restore request from the Amazon S3 console, the REST API, an AWS SDK, the AWS CLI or S3 Batch Operations.
  2. Select Standard or Bulk retrieval and specify how many days the temporary restored copy should remain available.
  3. Wait for the restore to complete. The object’s restore status can then be checked through S3 tooling.
  4. Read or download the temporary copy during that availability window.
  5. If you need an ongoing online copy, copy the restored object to a suitable storage class and set that destination class explicitly.

The archived object is not converted by a restore. AWS charges for the archived object and the temporary restored copy, in addition to applicable retrieval and request charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoring many objects

S3 Batch Operations can submit restores for a large manifest of objects, which is more practical than issuing individual commands at massive scale. For very large sets, test the workflow, estimate the temporary-copy storage period, and allow extra time beyond the normal per-object expectation.

The costs people commonly miss

There is no responsible universal Deep Archive price: storage and request rates vary by AWS Region and by workload. Build an estimate from the current regional AWS pricing page and your actual object count, sizes, transitions, retrieval volume, restore duration and retention period.

  • 180-day minimum: Deep Archive has a 180-day minimum storage duration. Deleting, overwriting or transitioning an object before that period can create a prorated early-deletion charge.
  • Lifecycle transition requests: Moving an object into Deep Archive through a lifecycle rule is a charged transition request. Many small objects can make request costs material.
  • Per-object metadata: AWS charges 40 KB of additional metadata for each Deep Archive object: 32 KB at the Deep Archive rate and 8 KB at the S3 Standard rate. Object count therefore matters, not just total bytes.
  • Retrieval and requests: Standard and Bulk have different retrieval economics, and request charges depend on the operation and current regional pricing.
  • Temporary restored copies: During the restore window, both the archived object and its temporary copy are billable.
  • Retention planning: A lifecycle rule that archives data sooner than intended, or deletes it before 180 days, can undermine the expected savings.

Design decisions before moving data

Choose an object layout

Because of the per-object metadata charge and per-request operations, millions of tiny objects can be less economical and harder to restore than sensibly consolidated archives. Consolidation must be balanced against the need to retrieve only a portion of a dataset and against your application’s preferred object boundaries.

Define a recovery runbook

Document who can request a restore, which retrieval tier to use, how many days the temporary copy should live, where restored data will be processed, and how a permanent online copy will be created. Include credentials, quotas, monitoring and a test restore.

Separate retention from accessibility

Keep the authoritative retention copy in Deep Archive, but place operationally useful derivatives or frequently needed indexes in a faster class. A restore alone does not create that permanent accessible copy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Will the data realistically be read less than once a year?
  • Can the business tolerate a typical wait of up to 12 hours for Standard or up to 48 hours for Bulk?
  • Will each object remain stored for at least 180 days?
  • Have you modeled object count, 40 KB per-object metadata, lifecycle requests and restore requests?
  • Is the AWS Region specified in your cost calculation?
  • Do you have a tested restore and temporary-copy expiration procedure?
  • Would Glacier Flexible Retrieval or Instant Retrieval better match your access frequency or response-time requirement?

Bottom line

Deep Archive is the S3 choice for durable, multi-year archives that are seldom read and can tolerate an hours-long restore. Its low storage rate is worthwhile only when you account for the 180-day minimum, per-object metadata, transition and request charges, retrieval costs and temporary restored copies. If your data must be usable immediately—or is likely to be read more often—choose a faster S3 class instead.
