If the Solar System became dynamically unstable, changing gravitational interactions could alter planetary orbits and, in extreme modeled cases, cause collisions, ejections, or a planet to fall into the Sun. Earth’s fate would depend on which orbits changed and how severely: it might remain in orbit while its climate shifted, or a major change to Earth’s own path could threaten long-term habitability. The fact that the Solar System is chaotic does not mean a catastrophe is imminent.
What does it mean for the Solar System to become unstable?
The planets do not travel on perfectly fixed tracks. Their gravity continually perturbs one another, and over long timescales small differences between possible orbital paths can grow. In a 1992 numerical integration spanning nearly 100 million years, Sussman and Wisdom found chaotic evolution and an exponential-divergence timescale of about four million years. That figure describes how quickly nearby modeled trajectories diverge; it is not a countdown to a collision or a prediction that the Solar System will fall apart in four million years. “Unstable” also does not identify one particular outcome. It could mean gradual changes to orbital shape, or a much more extreme trajectory in which a planet collides with another body, is ejected from the Solar System, or falls into the Sun. Which outcome a model produces depends on its starting conditions and assumptions.
What could happen to Earth?
Earth’s possible experience ranges from long-term climate shifts to severe disruption. The distinction is between gradual orbital variations and a major dynamical instability—not between two inevitable stages of the same process.

| Scenario | What may change | What the cited evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Gradual orbital variation | Earth’s eccentricity, tilt, or precession can change the amount and distribution of sunlight over time. | NASA describes natural orbital cycles that influence climate over tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years, including an approximately 100,000-year eccentricity cycle. These cycles are not evidence of impending planetary instability. NASA: “Milankovitch (Orbital) Cycles and Their Role in Earth’s Climate” (2020; updated 2024) |
| Major changes elsewhere in the planetary system | As the planets gravitationally affect one another, a large change to one orbit could influence others. | Simulations include extreme paths with inner-planet collisions or ejection, but the cited study does not establish that Earth must collide or be ejected. Batygin and Laughlin: “On the Dynamical Stability of the Solar System” (2008 preprint) |
| Severe change to Earth’s own orbit | A substantially different orbit could change Earth’s distance from the Sun and the sunlight reaching its surface. | Such a change could threaten long-term habitability, but the cited work does not give a specific climate forecast or determine whether Earth would survive a hypothetical scenario. |
Earth’s eccentricity describes how stretched rather than circular its orbit is. A change in eccentricity changes Earth–Sun distance across the year; changes in tilt and precession affect where and when sunlight reaches the surface. NASA notes that Jupiter and Saturn influence variations in Earth’s eccentricity. The climate effects of familiar orbital cycles are not equivalent to the consequences of a severe orbital disruption.
Could planets collide or could Earth be thrown out of orbit?
Collisions, ejections, and a planet falling into the Sun are dynamically possible in some numerical experiments, but those outcomes are not forecasts for Earth. In Batygin and Laughlin’s 2008 preprint, one 20-billion-year integration showed no severe instability. Separate, specially selected bifurcation experiments found unstable trajectories: in one, Mercury fell into the Sun after about 1.261 billion years; in another, Mercury and Venus collided after about 862 million years, with Mars ejected around 822 million years from now. Those times belong to those modeled trajectories only. They do not give a date or probability for Earth’s loss.

The study’s Mercury scenario involved a secular resonance with Jupiter. For Earth, the relevant point is that gravitational interactions can alter orbital elements, and in some conditions resonances can amplify eccentricity. The cited simulations do not provide a specific forecast for Earth in an undefined “unstable Solar System” scenario.

A stellar flyby is another possible source of perturbation. Brown and Rein’s 2022 preprint reports simulations in which small changes to the outer planets’ orbits can be transferred among planets and increase the modeled chance of inner-system destabilization. That is a model-dependent research result, not evidence that a flyby is about to endanger Earth. The study does not supply a specific fate for Earth under the unspecified scenario in this question. Has the Solar System been unstable before?
Models of early Solar System history include a period of giant-planet rearrangement roughly 50–500 million years after the Sun formed. NASA describes how that reorganization may have shifted Uranus and Neptune and sent debris toward Earth. The proposed trigger, including a possible Jupiter–Saturn orbital resonance, remains debated; the episode is evidence of past orbital rearrangement in scientific models, not proof that the same process will recur. NASA quotes researcher Avi Mandell describing how small changes may have led to “a huge event of scattering between planets.” NASA Science: “Chapter 4: Moving Around”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does chaos mean the Solar System is about to fall apart?
No. Chaos limits how precisely scientists can predict the detailed arrangement of the planets far into the future because small differences between trajectories grow. It does not, by itself, show that a collision is imminent. A divergence timescale is not an event deadline, and different modeled starting conditions can produce different results. The cited sources do not establish a probability or date for Earth’s destruction in a generic instability scenario, or a numerical climate forecast for a hypothetically altered Earth orbit.
