What Workers Can Do If AI Changes or Eliminates Their Jobs

If AI is changing your work, start with your tasks rather than your job title. Identify which activities are being automated, which still depend on judgment or relationships, and what nearby roles use your existing experience. Then speak with your employer, build practical AI literacy, prepare a transition plan and check public employment and income-support services before a crisis.

AI exposure is not the same as a prediction that your job will disappear. The International Labour Organization (ILO) reported in May 2025 that few occupations consist entirely of tasks that current generative AI can automate; transformation is the more likely overall effect. That change can still bring reduced hours, altered duties, unemployment or lower earnings, so preparation matters.

Start with the work you actually do

Write down the tasks that fill most of your week, including routine administration, customer contact, analysis, physical activity, supervision and decisions that carry consequences. Do not assess risk from a title such as “assistant,” “designer” or “analyst” alone. Two people with the same title may perform very different mixes of tasks.

Classify each task

For every task, note whether AI tools are already being tested, whether the output can be checked easily, and whether the work depends on context, trust, physical presence, confidential information or accountability. A useful first pass is:

Task pattern What to look for Practical response
Routine, repeatable digital work Clear inputs and outputs; high volume; easy quality checks Learn the approved tool, then move toward checking, exception handling and process improvement.
Work requiring judgment Ambiguous cases, competing priorities or significant consequences Develop domain expertise, documentation and review skills; understand where an AI output must not be used without human approval.
Relationship-based work Negotiation, care, coaching, trust or sensitive communication Strengthen listening, explanation, conflict resolution and responsible use of AI-assisted information.
Physical or on-site work Manipulating objects, operating equipment, navigating changing environments Look for technology that supports safety and planning while building complementary technical or supervisory skills.

This task-based approach reflects the ILO’s 2025 occupational-exposure method, which rates the potential automation of tasks and then aggregates those ratings by occupation. It is more informative than treating exposure as a yes-or-no label for a whole job.

Keep exposure in proportion

The ILO’s 9 October 2024 analysis estimated that 2.3% of employment—about 75 million jobs—was at high risk of automation from generative AI. In high-income countries, its estimate was 5.1%, or about 30 million jobs. These are exposure estimates, not counts of people already dismissed and not certain forecasts for an individual worker.

The same analysis said women were 2.5 times as exposed as men, partly because women are overrepresented in clerical support work. That is a population-level pattern, not a prediction about any particular woman’s job. Technology, employer choices, regulation and worker input can all change the outcome.

As ILO economist Janine Berg wrote in 2024, “The realist view, first and foremost, acknowledges that the outcomes are not set in stone.” Treat the estimates as a reason to examine your options, not as a verdict.

Ask your employer what is changing

Do not wait for a formal redundancy announcement to ask how AI fits into the business. A calm, specific conversation can reveal whether the plan is automation, assistance, redeployment or simply an experiment.

Questions to take into the conversation

  • Which tasks or services will the new system handle, and on what timetable?
  • What work will remain under human responsibility?
  • How will accuracy, privacy, safety and customer impact be checked?
  • What training is paid for, and which skills will be needed in six to 12 months?
  • Could duties, shifts or team structures change instead of eliminating the role?
  • Are there vacancies or redeployment routes for people whose current tasks shrink?
  • How will performance be assessed while the process is changing?

Bring a written list of your current tasks and measurable results. It gives the discussion something more useful than a general fear that “AI will replace us.” Ask for a follow-up date and record agreed training or redeployment actions.

Redeployment can be a real alternative

The ILO identifies internal redeployment as one way to avoid job loss. Its Termination of Employment Recommendation, 1982 (No. 166), encourages employers to explore measures such as adjusted working hours and hiring policies, with consultation, before termination where appropriate. Local law and collective agreements determine what an employer must do, but workers can still ask whether duties, hours or teams can be redesigned.

If you have a union, works council or employee representative, involve it early. A representative may know consultation requirements, training funds or openings in another department. Keep copies of notices, evaluations and training requests, especially if duties or hours are reduced.

Build skills that connect to a next step

Start with AI literacy, but do not stop at learning a tool’s buttons. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) framework describes foundational AI literacy as a starting point that should lead to specialized training, job-specific tools or career advancement. The useful question is not “How do I become an AI expert?” but “What capability will make me more effective in the work I want next?”

A practical progression

  1. Understand the system. Learn what the tool is designed to do, what data it uses, common failure modes and the rules for confidential or personal information.
  2. Practice verification. Compare outputs with reliable records, test edge cases and learn when to escalate an answer. Fluency without checking can create legal, financial, safety or reputational harm.
  3. Apply it to your role. Use approved tools on real, low-risk tasks such as drafting, summarizing, classifying or planning, then document the checks you perform.
  4. Add a specialized skill. Choose a course, credential, apprenticeship or supervised project tied to vacancies in your area—such as data quality, workflow analysis, customer operations, equipment maintenance or compliance.
  5. Show evidence. Keep a short record of problems solved, time saved, quality improvements, safeguards used and feedback received. These examples are more persuasive than listing generic “AI skills” on a résumé.

Strengthen capabilities that complement AI

OECD work on labour-market transformation discusses creative and social intelligence, reasoning and dealing with uncertainty alongside AI-related skills. These capabilities can make you useful in tasks where context, trust and accountability matter, but they are not a guaranteed shield from job loss. Employers may automate parts of relationship-based or analytical work too.

Prepare a transition plan before you need one

A transition plan turns a vague threat into several tested options. Identify roles adjacent to your current work, then compare them using the same criteria instead of choosing the first course advertised.

Map adjacent roles

  • List your knowledge of customers, regulations, equipment, products, languages and processes.
  • Translate achievements into transferable abilities: scheduling, troubleshooting, quality control, coaching, documentation, sales, analysis or coordination.
  • Search local vacancies and note recurring requirements, pay ranges, schedules and credentials.
  • Ask people doing the work what a normal week involves and which entry routes employers actually accept.
  • Choose one primary route and one fallback route, each with a first training or application step.

Compare routes deliberately

The following decision aid combines priorities emphasized by the DOL, OECD and Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. It is a way to organize your research, not a validated scoring system.

Criterion Questions to answer
Transferability How much of your experience, licence, portfolio or professional network carries over?
Local demand Are employers in your region hiring, and what requirements appear repeatedly?
Training burden How long, costly and prerequisite-heavy is the route? Is paid training available?
Job quality What are the pay, stability, schedule, safety, autonomy and advancement prospects?
Accessibility Does it work with disability, caregiving, age-related needs, transport, broadband or language access?
AI complementarity Will the role use AI while retaining human judgment, relationships, physical work or accountability? What could still change?

Do not assume a short online course guarantees a job. Check whether employers recognize it, whether it includes supervised practice and whether graduates can show work samples.

Use the right public service for your location

In the United States, the DOL framework says workforce agencies may integrate AI literacy into Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) services and career navigation. Availability, eligibility and funding are local, so contact your state or local workforce agency rather than assuming every service is free or open to everyone.

Elsewhere, start with your national or regional labour ministry, public employment service, unemployment-benefit agency, union and employer training resources. Ask specifically about career counselling, recognition of prior learning, paid training, transport or childcare support and vacancies linked to the programme.

If your job is eliminated

Act quickly, but do not sign away rights or benefits without understanding the document. Request the termination reason, effective date, final-pay information, continuation of insurance where applicable and any appeal or consultation deadline. Keep employment records, pay statements, training certificates and examples of your work.

Check income and reemployment support

The ILO recommends unemployment insurance or other social protection, reskilling and upskilling, and assistance that gives people time to search for quality reemployment. Rules and amounts vary by jurisdiction. Contact the relevant public agency promptly because claims, appeals and training approvals can have deadlines.

Ask whether the service offers job matching, career assessment, recognition of prior learning, disability accommodations, language support or help with transport and connectivity. If you are caring for someone, explain that constraint when discussing schedules; an apparently suitable route may be inaccessible without practical support.

Singapore pathways are location-specific

Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower describes a Career Conversion Programme and a SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme as examples of structured transition routes. Their names, eligibility and funding do not transfer automatically to other countries. The ministry reported that close to nine in 10 participants aged 51 and above in the Career Conversion Programme remained employed 24 months after embarking on it, measured over the preceding five years. That result applies to that programme and participant group; it is not a general success rate for retraining.

Protect job quality while you adapt

A move away from an exposed task is not automatically a good move. Before accepting a new role or course, check the full offer:

  • Whether pay is hourly, salaried, temporary or dependent on unpredictable demand.
  • How schedules, overtime, leave and remote or on-site requirements affect your life.
  • Whether safety responsibilities and equipment training are clear.
  • Who is accountable when an AI-assisted decision is wrong.
  • Whether monitoring, targets or algorithmic evaluations can be challenged.
  • What progression, credential recognition and future training are available.

Accessibility is part of career planning, not an afterthought. Request reasonable adjustments and accessible course materials early. A route that ignores disability, caregiving, age, language or broadband constraints is not a realistic route for you.

A 30-day preparation plan

  1. Days 1–5: Inventory your weekly tasks, tools, results and constraints. Mark tasks already affected by AI and tasks requiring human judgment or presence.
  2. Days 6–10: Ask your manager or representative the employer questions above. Request written information about training, redeployment and timing.
  3. Days 11–15: Identify two adjacent roles. Compare local vacancies, requirements, job quality and training burden.
  4. Days 16–20: Begin approved AI-literacy practice and one role-specific learning activity. Save evidence of what you can do and how you verify results.
  5. Days 21–25: Update your résumé, portfolio or professional profile with achievements and transferable skills. Contact a public employment service or career adviser.
  6. Days 26–30: Apply for one realistic opening, enrol in a verified programme or arrange an informational conversation. Set a monthly review date because tools and employer plans change.

What workers should expect from institutions

Workers cannot carry the transition alone. The OECD AI Principles say, “Governments should equip people with the skills for AI and support workers to ensure a fair transition.” OECD guidance calls for training over working life, support for displaced workers, social protection and access to new labour-market opportunities. Employers also influence whether AI becomes assistance, redeployment or dismissal through consultation, training and job design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OECD evidence cited here comes from 2021, so it should not be read as a definitive description of labour-market outcomes in 2026. The ILO likewise notes that the technology is evolving. Use current local vacancy information and programme rules when making a decision.

The Bottom Line

Prepare for AI by mapping tasks, asking your employer for a concrete transition plan, building verified role-specific skills and comparing adjacent jobs for demand, quality and accessibility. If displacement occurs, contact public employment and income-support services immediately; AI exposure signals change, not a predetermined end to your working life.
