What Work IQ Means for Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Customers

Work IQ is Microsoft’s business and workplace intelligence layer for giving Copilot and agents context about an organization’s data, processes, and work. For Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management customers, it is intended to help AI work with business meaning—such as how records relate and what rules guide a process—while Finance and Supply Chain Management remain the systems of record.

What Work IQ means in Dynamics 365

Microsoft describes Work IQ as connecting Copilot and agents to organizational knowledge, context, people, work, and business application data. Rather than treating each business record as an isolated piece of information, Work IQ is intended to make relationships, process context, and rules available for AI-assisted work.

That distinction matters in Finance and Supply Chain Management. A useful response or action may depend on how data is related and which business process governs it, not just on the contents of a single record. Microsoft says Work IQ adds that kind of meaning and context to Dynamics 365 and Power Apps data. Its broader business-application scenarios can span finance, operations, supply chain, sales, and service, and may include Power Platform and third-party line-of-business applications. Microsoft describes Work IQ’s business-application approach here.

What changes—and what does not—for Finance and Supply Chain Management

Business context becomes reusable for Copilot and agents

The intended change is that Copilot and agents can draw on modeled business understanding: how information connects, and what rules and processes guide work. That can support scenarios that cross functional boundaries—for example, work involving finance and operations—rather than limiting context to one application or isolated record.

Finance and Supply Chain Management remain systems of record

Work IQ is not described as replacing Dynamics 365 Finance or Supply Chain Management. Microsoft says business applications remain the systems of record, while their data and processes are modeled into reusable context for Copilot and agents. In other words, Work IQ is a context and action layer around business applications, not a new ledger or inventory system. Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 announcement explains this relationship.

How agent actions are intended to work

Microsoft describes governed actions in which an agent can propose a change, follow required approval steps, and update a source record within the user’s permissions. This is a product description of the intended model, not confirmation that every Finance or Supply Chain Management workflow can be changed by an agent.

  • Context: the agent uses relevant business data and process meaning.
  • Governance: proposed changes can be subject to required approvals.
  • Permissions: actions are described as operating within the user’s permissions.
  • System of record: an approved change updates the relevant source application record.

These descriptions do not establish that every action is enabled by default, guarantee compliance, or eliminate the need to configure permissions and approvals. Customers should assess controls for the specific workflow and agent they intend to use.

When can Dynamics 365 customers use Work IQ?

In its September 25, 2026 announcement, Microsoft said public preview would begin September 30, with rollout continuing throughout October 2026. That is a staged rollout, not evidence of immediate or universal availability. Check current Microsoft guidance and notices in your tenant for the status that applies to your organization.

Access requirements for an individual Finance or Supply Chain Management customer—including licensing, region, tenant configuration, and feature prerequisites—are not established by the announcement. Verify them with current Microsoft documentation before planning deployment. The announcement’s dates also should not be treated as confirmation that a capability is generally available.

What to check before planning around it

Because rollout and configuration can vary, evaluate Work IQ in the context of the specific environment and use case. Confirm:

  • Which Finance and Supply Chain Management data and workflows are in scope.
  • Which Copilot or agent experiences are enabled for the tenant.
  • Which user permissions and approval controls govern the proposed actions.
  • What regional, licensing, and tenant prerequisites apply.
  • Whether each relevant capability is in preview or generally available.

Microsoft Learn also describes roadmap work involving Dataverse integration, reusable skills, business context, and agent identity. Microsoft cautions that roadmap functionality may not have been released and that timelines can change, so those items are not proof that every capability is available today. See the Microsoft Learn release-plan material.
