What Windows Dev Drive Does—and Whether It Helps Game Loading Times

Windows Dev Drive is not a gaming performance upgrade. It is a ReFS-based volume intended for software repositories, package caches, build files, working directories and temporary project data. Microsoft does not document faster game loading on Dev Drive and explicitly says applications should not be installed there. If your goal is shorter game load screens, Dev Drive is the wrong feature to target.

What Windows Dev Drive is designed to do

A Dev Drive is a storage volume formatted with Microsoft’s Resilient File System (ReFS). Windows provides filesystem settings and security-filter controls intended to reduce overhead in file-intensive development work. Typical contents include source-code repositories, package caches, build output, working directories and temporary files.

Microsoft’s setup guidance draws a clear boundary around that purpose: developer tools such as Visual Studio, MSBuild and software development kits should remain on the normal system volume, while project files can live on a Dev Drive. The same guidance says, “The purpose of a Dev Drive is to host files for building and debugging software projects designated to store repositories, package caches, working directories, and temp folders. We do not recommend installing applications on a Dev Drive.” Read the current requirements at Microsoft Learn’s Dev Drive documentation.

That distinction matters because a game installation is an application workload, not a source tree or build cache. A game may contain many small files, but that fact alone does not make it a supported Dev Drive workload or establish that ReFS will improve its loading pipeline.

How Dev Drive and Defender performance mode work together

The feature most often associated with Dev Drive is Microsoft Defender performance mode. On a trusted Dev Drive in Windows 11, Defender can defer a scan until a file-open operation has completed instead of scanning synchronously while the operation is in progress. Microsoft describes this as a balance between threat protection and developer productivity.

Real-time protection remains enabled. Performance mode is not an instruction to turn off antivirus, exclude an entire disk, or remove filesystem filters. Disabling protection to chase a faster load screen creates a security risk and is not the documented Dev Drive model. The behavior and trust requirements are described in Microsoft’s Defender performance-mode documentation.

Deferring a scan can reduce security-filter overhead for the file-open patterns common in development. It does not mean every file read is faster, nor does it change how a game decompresses assets, compiles shaders or waits for a server. The benefit is workload-specific.

Does Windows Dev Drive make games load faster?

There is no supported, documented game-loading advantage. The Microsoft material covering Dev Drive does not provide a game benchmark against NTFS, a percentage improvement, or a promise of shorter loading times. Instead, Microsoft says Dev Drive is for software project files and does not recommend installing applications on it. You should therefore not move or install a game on Dev Drive expecting a guaranteed or supported speed-up.

This conclusion does not prove that every game will behave identically on every computer. A particular title could show a different result because of its own file layout, storage device, drivers, security software and game engine. It does mean there is no Microsoft-backed reason to choose Dev Drive for that experiment, and no general figure you can use to predict the result.

What actually happens during a game load

A loading screen is usually a chain of operations rather than one disk read. Microsoft’s Windows game guidance identifies several contributors:

  • Reading game data from local storage instead of slower source media.
  • Opening many files and repeatedly checking whether files exist or have overrides.
  • Antivirus or other filter-driver scans that add work to file operations.
  • Buffering choices and the number and pattern of API calls.
  • Whether the game uses asynchronous I/O and background loading.
  • Asset or shader conversion performed on the first launch or after an update.
  • Network waits when a title retrieves account, cloud or online-session data.

These are game- and workload-level mechanisms. They are not evidence that ReFS or Dev Drive improves loading. A title that spends most of its loading time compiling shaders, waiting for a network response or decompressing a large archive may gain little from a different volume even if raw storage reads are quick. The relevant technical discussions are in Microsoft’s “Top Issues for Windows Titles” and “Installation and Maintenance of Games.”

Dev Drive versus a conventional game volume

The important comparison is intended workload and supported use, not a blanket claim that one filesystem is faster.

Question Dev Drive Conventional game volume
Primary purpose Repositories, package caches, build and debugging files, working directories and temporary project data. Installing and running applications, including games, according to the game and Windows requirements.
Filesystem ReFS. Commonly NTFS, although the exact filesystem depends on how the volume was formatted.
Microsoft’s application-install guidance Microsoft does not recommend installing applications on it. No Dev Drive restriction applies; follow the game’s platform and Windows requirements.
Defender treatment Trusted Dev Drives can use performance mode, which defers scans until after a file-open operation while real-time protection stays on. Uses the normal security-filter behavior for that volume.
Game-loading benchmark Not supplied in the cited Microsoft documentation. No universal comparison can be inferred without testing a specific game and system.
External removable or hot-pluggable disk Not supported as a Dev Drive destination. May be usable for game storage if the game platform supports it, but performance and reliability depend on the specific device and connection.

Because the official sources do not provide a controlled game benchmark, it would be misleading to turn this table into an FPS or loading-time promise.

Dev Drive requirements and limitations

It cannot be the C: drive

Microsoft documents Dev Drive as a separate volume; it cannot be the Windows C: drive. Plan for another supported internal volume or a suitable partition before attempting setup.

Minimum size and memory guidance

The documented minimum Dev Drive size is 50 GB. Microsoft recommends at least 8 GB of system memory and says 16 GB is preferable because ReFS uses slightly more memory than NTFS. These are setup recommendations, not a claim that adding RAM will make a game load faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removable and hot-pluggable disks are excluded

External hard drives and SSDs that are removable or hot-pluggable are not supported as Dev Drive volumes. An external SSD therefore is not a valid way to create a portable Dev Drive. Do not assume that a fast USB connection changes that support boundary.

Block cloning is a copy feature

For Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025, Microsoft documents ReFS block cloning on Dev Drive. Block cloning can improve certain file-copy operations by avoiding a conventional full-data copy. That is useful for development workflows, such as duplicating project data, but it is not a game-loading benchmark and should not be presented as one.

Should you put an existing game on Dev Drive?

There is no supported reason to relocate an existing game merely because the destination is a Dev Drive. Microsoft’s application-install guidance points the other way. If a game is already there and works, avoid assuming that its current load time demonstrates a Dev Drive benefit: a change in patch state, shader cache, background tasks, driver version or network response can alter results.

If you are troubleshooting a slow title, first identify which part of the load is slow. Compare a repeat launch with a first launch, note whether the delay occurs before or after a network sign-in, and check whether the game performs shader or asset processing after an update. Those observations distinguish storage reads from work that a filesystem change cannot address.

A practical way to investigate long load times

1. Establish a repeatable scenario

Use the same save, level or menu path and record whether the delay happens on the first launch, every launch or only after updates. A one-time conversion or shader step should not be treated as a permanent storage result.

2. Separate local I/O from online waits

Observe whether the game is waiting for account authentication, cloud synchronization or matchmaking. A network wait cannot be eliminated by changing the local filesystem.

3. Look for file-processing work

Repeated file-existence checks, many small opens, decompression and first-run conversion can dominate a loading phase. These are implementation details of the title; Dev Drive’s developer optimizations do not rewrite them.

4. Consider security-filter overhead without weakening protection

Security scans and other filesystem filters can affect file-open timing. Keep real-time protection enabled, and do not disable antivirus or apply broad exclusions as a test. If a game publisher documents a specific, safe exception for its title, follow that publisher’s instructions rather than treating Dev Drive performance mode as a substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Change one variable at a time

If you compare locations, use the same computer, game build, graphics settings, driver version and background workload. Otherwise, any observed difference cannot be attributed confidently to Dev Drive.

When Dev Drive is the right choice

Dev Drive makes sense when your bottleneck is a development workload: cloning and updating repositories, installing package dependencies, building software, generating intermediate files or repeatedly opening project data. Its ReFS design and optional Defender performance mode target those operations while preserving real-time protection on trusted volumes.

It is not the right choice when your only goal is faster game loading. Microsoft’s documentation supplies no game-specific measurement, recommends against installing applications there, and excludes removable disks as Dev Drive targets. Choose storage and troubleshooting steps based on the particular game’s loading behavior rather than assuming that a developer-focused volume is a universal gaming optimization.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

  • Supported: Dev Drive is a ReFS volume for repositories, package caches, working directories and temporary development files.
  • Supported: Trusted Dev Drives can use Defender performance mode, which defers scanning until after file-open operations while real-time protection remains enabled.
  • Supported: Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 document ReFS block cloning for Dev Drive copy workloads.
  • Not established: Any percentage, average or guaranteed reduction in game loading time.
  • Not recommended: Installing applications, including games, on Dev Drive solely to seek a loading-time improvement.
