What Windows 11 Color Filters Actually Change on Your Display

Windows 11 Color filters change the color palette shown on your screen. Microsoft describes the purpose as helping you tell apart things that differ only by color. The setting is part of Windows Accessibility, and it works at the operating-system level. It is not a tinted sheet over the monitor, a calibration profile, or a night-time warmth control.

What the filter actually changes

Color filters transform the colors Windows sends to the display. Microsoft’s Windows support page puts it this way: Color filters change the color palette on the screen and can help you distinguish between things that differ only by color. The page applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Two limits matter here. First, Microsoft does not say at which stage of the graphics pipeline the transformation happens. Second, its guidance does not promise identical results in every app or display configuration. A chart that depends on subtle hue differences may read clearly in one program and oddly in another, so the change should be judged against the content you actually use.

How to turn Color filters on

  1. Press Windows logo key + U, or select Start > Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Select Color filters.
  3. Turn on the Color filters switch.
  4. Choose a filter from the list and check it against your usual apps before settling on it.
  5. Optional: turn on the keyboard shortcut option in the Color filters settings. Microsoft documents Windows logo key + Ctrl + C for toggling the filters on and off, in its Windows accessibility guidance.

Microsoft’s current Color filters page does not list every option in the menu, so the choices you see on your PC are the authoritative list. The menu may differ between Windows versions and updates.

Inversion and the color-vision filters

Windows offers two broad families of choice. The first is inversion, which reverses display colors. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance gives these examples: black becomes white, red becomes turquoise, and green becomes purple. Those examples describe inversion only. They are not a general description of every filter.

The second family is predesigned color-vision filters. Microsoft’s color and contrast guidance says Windows includes filters designed for deuteranopia, protanopia, and tritanopia. Which one helps, if any, depends on the person and the content, and Microsoft’s advice is to try the options and see how familiar apps look.

Check the apps you use most

Because the palette changes everywhere at once, a filter that improves a web page can make a spreadsheet or photo harder to read. Before deciding, check:

  • Text and interface labels in your main productivity or browser apps.
  • Charts, graphs, and color-coded status indicators, where distinguishing hues is the whole point.
  • Photos and videos, where skin tones and product colors can shift noticeably.
  • Any app with its own dark or light theme, since app-level colors may not respond the same way.

How Color filters differ from nearby display settings

Many Windows display controls affect how the screen looks, but they do different jobs. The table below separates them by what each one changes and where to find it.

Control What Microsoft says it changes Where to find it and how to tell it apart
Color filters The screen’s color palette, to help distinguish content that differs only by color. Accessibility > Color filters. Try options and inspect familiar apps.
Inverted filter Reverses display colors (for example, black to white, red to turquoise, green to purple). One filter choice inside Color filters, not a separate feature.
Night light Makes display colors warmer, intended for use at night. System > Display > Night light. Separate from Color filters.
Brightness and content-adaptive brightness Changes screen brightness. Some Windows 11 PCs can also adjust brightness and contrast based on displayed content. System > Display. Content-adaptive support depends on hardware and configuration.
Dark mode Switches Windows interface surfaces and supported apps to dark colors. Personalization > Colors. App support varies.
Contrast themes Uses distinct color combinations for interface elements to improve visibility. Accessibility > Contrast themes. Useful when text and controls need stronger separation.
Color profiles and calibration Lets you add or remove color profiles, set defaults for connected displays, and access calibration. Display color management. These settings do not control the Color filters toggle.

Sources: Microsoft’s display brightness and color guidance covers Night light, brightness, and color profiles, and the accessibility pages cover the filter and contrast controls.

When the result is not what you expected

  • Text is still hard to read. Compare Contrast themes under Accessibility > Contrast themes. That setting changes interface element contrast, not the overall palette.
  • The screen feels too bright or harsh at night. Adjust brightness under System > Display, or turn on Night light. Neither is a color filter.
  • Colors look wrong only in one app or photo. Check that app’s own color or theme settings first. Then review the display color management options described in Microsoft’s display guidance.
  • You want the filter to stay on across tasks. Use the keyboard shortcut so you can toggle it quickly instead of returning to Settings each time.

What Microsoft’s documentation does not establish

Microsoft’s pages on this feature are instructional. They do not publish a figure for how well Color filters work, and they make no clinical claims. Treat the feature as a usability aid that changes the palette, not as a correction for color-vision deficiency.
