“Win Switch programs” is not an established software category. The best-supported meaning of “win switch” is win-switch, a CSS class in the Windows Library for JavaScript (WinJS) ToggleSwitch control. That control is a legacy on/off user-interface element for Windows 8-era apps. It is not a program, and it is not a standalone tool you install. A few unrelated technical uses of the phrase also exist, covered below.
The short definition
Microsoft Learn documents WinJS.UI.ToggleSwitch as “a control that lets the user switch an option between two states: on (checked is set to true) and off (checked is set to false).” It is the app-development equivalent of a light switch: one setting, two positions.

Within that control’s styling, win-switch is the CSS class that styles the slider. So when someone says “win switch” in a Windows app-development context, they usually mean that slider element or the ToggleSwitch it belongs to.

A Microsoft Press book on Windows 8 app development makes the same identification. It adds an implementation detail: the slider is built on an HTML range input. That detail is historical and says nothing about how switches are built in modern frameworks.

What a ToggleSwitch looks like in code
In WinJS, you declare the control in markup and set its options. This is a minimal sketch of the pattern:

data-win-options="{ title: 'Wi-Fi', checked: true }"></div>The checked value is the state. true means on and false means off, which matches the Microsoft definition above. Developers who want a different look override win-switch, win-label or win-title in their stylesheet.

Why it is not a “program”
The word “programs” in the title suggests software you can run. A ToggleSwitch is a building block inside an app, a piece of interface and not an application. Nothing in the documentation describes a family of “Win Switch” products, so be skeptical of any page that presents one as a downloadable tool.

The Microsoft Learn reference sits in the previous-versions documentation collection and was last updated on January 25, 2017. Treat it as a legacy reference. Whether WinJS is still supported or maintained today is not established by that page, so don’t assume it is a current Windows feature. If you are building something new, use the toggle control in whatever current framework you work with.

Other things “win switch” can mean
The phrase turns up elsewhere with unrelated meanings. Don’t mix them up with WinJS:
- EMM386
win=option: a command-line switch from the DOS memory-manager world. - Windows/Mac modifier switch: a hardware setting described in Avid’s device documentation, which changes how modifier keys behave for each operating system.
If your question came from a code sample, check whether it contains win-switch or WinJS.UI.ToggleSwitch. If it came from a DOS config file or a keyboard manual, you are looking at one of the other meanings.
