On October 1, 2026, The Military Wallet reported an average 30-year fixed VA purchase rate of 6.91%. That is a dated market snapshot from a secondary source—not an official VA rate or a quote any particular borrower is guaranteed to receive. There is no single lender established as best for every borrower; compare written offers for the same loan scenario, including APR, points, fees and cash to close.
VA loan rate figures for October 1, 2026
The figures below are not interchangeable: they cover different products, dates or measures, and none establishes an individual borrower’s available rate.

Rates change frequently and vary with the borrower, property, loan type, lender pricing, points, fees and lock period. The October 1 averages and October 3 comparison-page figures are separate dated observations, not a like-for-like lender comparison. Freddie Mac’s broader mortgage average supplies market context only; it should not be substituted for a VA rate.
Which VA lender is best?
The evidence does not establish one lender as best for every borrower. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says borrowers use private lenders and that lenders offer different rates and fees. Its home-buying guidance states: “Lenders offer different loan interest rates and fees, so shop around for the loan that best meets your needs.”

These listings are not a clean ranking: their points and costs differ, and the displayed figures are not personalized offers. Bankrate says it receives a fixed fee for some lender connections, a relationship to consider when using its comparison tool.

How to compare VA loan offers
Request a written Loan Estimate from several VA lenders using the same loan amount, term, borrower and property assumptions, rate-lock period and points structure. Then compare the complete cost picture:
- Rate and APR. The note rate affects the scheduled interest rate; APR also reflects certain loan costs. Compare both rather than choosing by headline rate alone.
- Points, fees and credits. Check the discount points charged to obtain the rate, lender origination and other lender fees, and any lender credits. VA says many lenders charge a flat 1% origination fee, but that is not a universal quote; verify the actual charge on each estimate.
- Lock terms. Compare the lock length and any conditions attached to it. Offers with different lock periods may not be directly comparable.
- Total financing and cash needed. Review cash to close and the expected loan balance, including any funding fee that will be financed.
- VA loan process support. Ask whether the lender can clearly explain the eligibility, entitlement, appraisal and closing steps relevant to your circumstances.
A September 12, 2026 lender page advertised a 30-year fixed VA purchase rate of 6.250%, a 6.703% APR and 1.688 discount points. Its assumptions included a 720 credit score and a 30-day lock, among other conditions. This example illustrates why a rate alone does not describe an offer; it is neither a representative market average nor an October 1 quote.

How the VA funding fee can affect the cost
The VA funding fee is a one-time charge that helps fund the program. VA-backed loans do not require a down payment or monthly mortgage insurance, but the funding fee may apply. It can be paid at closing or financed into the loan, and the amount depends on loan type and, for some loan types, prior use and down payment.
For VA-backed purchase and construction loans, the VA’s published chart lists these funding-fee rates for Veterans, active-duty service members, and National Guard and Reserve members:

As an example from the VA chart, a $190,000 loan after a $10,000 down payment on a $200,000 purchase has a 1.5% funding fee of $2,850. Borrowers receiving VA compensation for a service-connected disability—or eligible to receive it but instead receiving retirement or active-duty pay—do not pay the fee. Other exemption conditions may apply; check the VA’s current chart and rules for your situation before estimating the charge.

What to do before choosing an offer
- Get dated written Loan Estimates from multiple lenders for the same scenario.
- Compare APR, discount points, lender charges or credits, lock terms, cash to close and the resulting loan balance.
- Confirm your funding-fee amount or exemption using current VA guidance.
- Choose based on the total offer and how well it fits your circumstances, not on an isolated advertised rate.
