Web hosting is the service that stores your website’s files or application and delivers them to visitors. A hosting plan may also bundle storage, a control panel, CMS installation, SSL, backups, email, support, or a site builder, but there is no universal package. You still need a website and its content, and you may need to purchase a domain, branded email, a builder, security services, or other capabilities separately.
The reliable way to choose is to compare one specific plan’s limits, included term, renewal price, backup and restore policy, and site count—not just its advertised monthly rate.

What web hosting actually does
When someone enters your web address, a hosting server retrieves the site’s files, database, images, scripts, and other resources and sends them to the visitor’s browser. Hosting is therefore the infrastructure and service that keeps a site reachable online. It is not the same thing as registering a name, designing pages, writing content, or running a business.
Plans differ by server type and management level. Shared hosting places multiple sites on one server and is commonly aimed at beginners and small sites. A VPS provides more control and isolated resources for a growing application. A managed WordPress plan adds platform-specific administration. These are different service levels, not interchangeable features on a single checklist. Namecheap describes shared hosting as a beginner or small-site option and VPS hosting as a higher-control choice for growing applications on its hosting comparison page.

What a hosting plan may include
The following services are common, but “included” always means included in a particular plan, for a particular period, with particular limits.
| Component | What it provides | Questions to ask before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Server space | Storage for site files, databases, images, logs, and application data. | How many gigabytes are included? Is storage SSD? Are databases and email counted against the same quota? |
| Bandwidth or transfer | The data delivered when visitors load pages, download files, or stream media. | Is there a measured monthly limit, a fair-use policy, or a traffic cap that triggers charges or throttling? |
| Control panel | A web interface for domains, files, databases, email, backups, and settings. | Which panel is supplied, and which functions are available on your tier? |
| CMS installation | One-click installation or managed setup for a content-management system. | Is the software itself free, and who handles updates, plugins, security, and troubleshooting? |
| SSL/TLS | Encrypted connections using HTTPS between browsers and the site. | Which domains and subdomains are covered, for how long, and how is renewal handled? |
| Backups | Copies that can be used to recover files or databases after an error or attack. | How often are copies made, how long are they retained, and can you restore a database or a single site? |
| Mailboxes at your domain, such as [email protected]. | How many accounts, how much mailbox storage, what spam protection, and is the offer temporary? | |
| Site builder | A visual editor and templates for creating pages without coding. | Is the builder included permanently, limited to one site, or billed separately after a trial? |
| Support and migration | Human or ticket support and, on some plans, help moving an existing site. | What channels and hours are provided, and is migration free only for certain control panels? |
Namecheap says its plans include storage, bandwidth, cPanel, one-click CMS installations, SSL, and support; higher tiers add AutoBackup and a CDN. Those are examples of a provider’s packaging, not a definition of every host’s entry plan.
Do you need to buy a domain separately?
A domain is the human-readable address people type, while hosting is where the site lives. You can buy them from the same company for convenience or keep the domain with a separate registrar and point its DNS records to your host. An existing domain does not need to be replaced when you change hosting.
Some plans advertise a free domain for the first year. The benefit can be restricted to selected extensions and usually does not eliminate the renewal fee in year two. Examples shown on provider pages include a first-year domain offer from one.com and IONOS; check the eligible extensions, privacy treatment, transfer rules, and renewal price at checkout. The one.com offer is described on its US hosting page, while IONOS lists its offer at its hosting promotion page.

If you already own a domain, you generally need only change its nameservers or DNS records to the values supplied by the new host. Allow time for DNS changes to propagate, keep the old hosting active until the new site works, and do not cancel domain registration while transferring a site.
Is SSL included, and do you need to buy it?
SSL/TLS certificates enable HTTPS and encrypt traffic between a visitor’s browser and your site. Let’s Encrypt explains the automated certificate process and validation in How It Works. A host may install and renew a certificate at no separate charge, but “free SSL” is not a universal promise that every hostname is covered forever.
Check whether the certificate covers the root domain, the www version, subdomains, parked domains, and any additional sites. Also check whether renewal is automatic and whether support will fix a failed renewal. GoDaddy’s hosting page illustrates why the fine print matters: it distinguishes certificates lasting one year from a plan with SSL that has no renewal fee. The page displayed euro-denominated prices when checked, so those figures should not be treated as US pricing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a normal informational or small business site, do not purchase a separate certificate until you know the host’s certificate type, coverage, and renewal terms. A paid certificate can still be relevant for specialized validation or organizational requirements, but the need depends on the project rather than on hosting alone.

Does hosting include email?
Some plans include mailboxes on your domain; others include only forwarding, a short promotional period, or no email service. Compare the number of accounts, storage per mailbox, attachment limits, spam and malware filtering, webmail access, and support for IMAP, SMTP, and mobile devices.
A mailbox included for one year is not the same as permanent email hosting. Confirm the price after the promotional period and what happens if you move the website. Your domain can remain with one registrar, your website with one host, and email with another provider, provided the DNS records are configured correctly.
For a solo portfolio, one or two addresses may be enough. A team may need aliases, shared mailboxes, archive retention, or administrative controls that a basic hosting mailbox does not provide. Do not select a plan solely because it advertises a large mailbox count if the storage, reliability, or migration tools do not meet your needs.

Are backups included with hosting?
Backup frequency is only one part of a recovery policy. A useful backup description states what is copied, how many versions are retained, where copies are stored, and how restoration works. A label such as “daily backups” does not by itself prove that databases, uploaded media, email, or configuration files are included, nor does it guarantee a successful restore.

Provider pages show meaningful differences. one.com lists daily backups and plan-based email counts. Other plans shown in the market use weekly backups on lower tiers and daily backups on higher tiers. Treat those statements as plan-specific and confirm the exact tier before ordering.
Backup questions to answer before checkout
- Are files, databases, email, and DNS or configuration settings all covered?
- How many days or versions are retained?
- Can you restore one file, one database, or only the entire account?
- Is restoration self-service, and is there a fee for assisted recovery?
- Are backups stored separately from the production server?
For a site that cannot tolerate data loss, keep an independent copy under your control even when the host advertises backups. Test a restore before you need one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need WordPress or a website builder?
Hosting alone does not create pages, navigation, forms, product listings, or copy. You still need to build the site, whether by uploading your own code, installing a CMS, using a visual builder, or hiring someone.
Recommended Free Tools
Many plans offer one-click CMS installation. Namecheap lists one-click CMS installs and a site builder; one.com lists one-click WordPress installation. Installation can be free because the underlying software is open source, while premium themes, plugins, builder features, support, or transaction tools may cost extra.
Best Value
Choose a builder when you want a guided visual workflow and accept its templates and platform limits. Choose a CMS when you need extensibility, custom content types, or portability and are prepared to maintain updates and security. A managed plan may reduce maintenance but usually narrows server-level control. Whichever route you choose, verify that you can export content and that the plan supports the required database, runtime version, storage, and traffic.
What you may still need to buy
Use this checklist after selecting a hosting plan:
- Domain registration: required unless you already own a domain or the plan includes an eligible domain for the period you need.
- Website creation: your own code, a CMS, a builder subscription, a theme, or professional design services.
- Content and functions: writing, photography, video, booking, commerce, analytics, forms, or specialized integrations.
- Custom-domain email: only if the plan’s mailboxes, storage, reliability, or retention do not fit.
- Security and monitoring: possibly a web-application firewall, malware monitoring, login protection, or managed updates when the plan does not supply them.
- Independent backups: prudent for important sites, even when host backups are included.
- Performance services: a CDN, image optimization, caching, or extra compute if your traffic and application require them.
- Business services: payment processing, legal pages, accessibility work, support contracts, or compliance tooling as appropriate to your project.
Do not buy an add-on merely because it appears in a checkout column. First map the requirement to a feature and verify whether the base plan already satisfies it.
How to compare real hosting plans
Compare plans with the same commitment length and the same intended site type. A low introductory monthly figure can conceal a large prepayment or a much higher renewal rate.
| Provider page checked 2026-10-13 | Published details relevant to the decision | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Namecheap | Storage, bandwidth, cPanel, one-click CMS installs, SSL, support; higher tiers list AutoBackup and CDN. | The page displays plans starting at $1.88 per month, but that starting figure is not a comparable quote for a defined configuration. |
| one.com US | First-year domain, plan-based email counts, SSL, one-click WordPress installation, storage, and daily backups. | The retrieved plan section did not show a numeric price, so no price comparison can be made from that page alone. |
| IONOS US | Plan-based quantities for domains, email accounts, storage, backups, and WordPress features, with term and renewal prices shown. | The offer is changeable; recheck the current term, renewal rate, and eligibility before purchase. |
| GoDaddy | Shows that SSL and other hosting features vary by plan. | The page reviewed displayed euro-denominated prices, not US pricing. |
For each candidate, record the full first-term total, the recurring renewal rate, number of websites, storage and resource limits, domain inclusion and renewal, SSL scope and duration, mailbox count and promotional period, backup frequency and retention, CMS or builder access, migration terms, support channels, and any separate security or CDN charge.
A practical buying sequence
- Define the site: estimate pages, media, visitors, database needs, email users, and whether you need a CMS, builder, store, or custom application.
- Choose the service level: start with shared hosting for a modest site when its limits fit; move to managed WordPress or a VPS when you need platform management, isolation, or server control.
- Separate one-time and recurring costs: write down the first term, renewal prices, domain renewal, mailbox renewal, builder fees, and optional services.
- Verify operational details: read the backup restore procedure, SSL coverage, resource limits, migration policy, and cancellation terms.
- Register or connect the domain: confirm the legal registrant, enable account security, and configure DNS only after you know the target host.
- Build and secure the site: install the CMS or builder, create content, enable HTTPS, update software, and set administrator protections.
- Test before launch: check forms, mobile layouts, email delivery, redirects, backups, restore access, and performance from an external connection.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying on the headline rate: compare the entire introductory term and renewal price.
- Assuming “free domain” is permanent: record the eligible extension and year-two renewal.
- Treating SSL as universal: verify every hostname and automatic renewal.
- Confusing backup frequency with recoverability: ask about retention, coverage, and an actual restore path.
- Assuming hosting equals a finished site: budget time or money for design, content, software, and maintenance.
- Overbuying email: match mailbox capacity and administration to the number of users.
- Canceling the old service too soon: keep the old host until DNS, content, email, and backups have been verified on the new account.
The Bottom Line
Buy hosting for the server service your site needs, then verify every bundled feature as a plan-specific term. Budget separately for a domain when it is not included, for the website itself, and for email, backups, security, or performance tools that the selected plan does not adequately cover.
