In free-space quantum communication, weather can dim or distort the optical path, daylight can add background photons that obscure detections, and line of sight determines whether terminals can establish and hold an aimed beam. These conditions affect how much signal arrives, how reliably it can be identified, and whether a link is available—not whether quantum communication is categorically possible.
How weather affects a free-space optical link
Free-space systems send photons or other optical quantum states through air rather than a guided fibre. The atmosphere does not treat those photons differently because they are quantum: ordinary optical losses and disturbances still matter.

Attenuation and scattering reduce the signal
Haze, fog, clouds, and precipitation can absorb or scatter light, leaving fewer photons to reach the receiver. The NASA Workshop on Space Quantum Communications and Networks (2020) gives an illustrative atmospheric-extinction range from 0.2 dB/km in exceptionally clear weather to upwards of 300 dB/km in very dense cloud or fog. These are condition-specific endpoints in a report, not a universal forecast or a guarantee of performance for a particular route. NASA workshop report

Changes in air refractive index can distort the wavefront, cause beam wander, and produce scintillation—fluctuations in received intensity. These effects can lower or vary the signal at the receiver, even when the path is not blocked. NASA notes that “Weather and atmospheric conditions can complicate this pointing; eddies and particles in haze or fog generate random fluctuations in the relative permittivity of the air.” NASA, Quantum Communication 101

What daylight changes
Sunlight entering the receiver adds background detections. The receiver must distinguish photons associated with the communication signal from this extra light; more background can make detections less reliable and reduce useful performance. Daylight is therefore a noise challenge, not a categorical barrier.
In a 2017 experiment, researchers reported daylight free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) over 53 km at 1550 nm. Their setup used single-mode fibre coupling and low-noise upconversion single-photon detectors to address sunlight noise. This establishes feasibility for that experimental system, not equivalent performance at every wavelength, receiver, geometry, or weather condition. Nature Photonics experiment

Why line of sight is more than an unobstructed path
Terminals need an optical path that is not blocked, but they also have to acquire, point toward, and track one another accurately. Diffraction, finite transmitter and receiver apertures, pointing errors, and atmospheric effects all influence how much light is collected. A satellite-ground link has an additional geometric limit: as a satellite moves across the sky, visibility is a finite opportunity rather than a permanently available connection. Day and night results depend on the site and system
Daylight performance cannot be reduced to a universal day-versus-night rule. A metropolitan study described a 1.7 km link in Jena and a separate 300 m demonstration in Bonn. In the reported Jena conditions, performance changed during the day as sunlight varied with clouds, while the nighttime run was more stable. Those observations describe the particular links and conditions studied; they do not predict performance for other routes or equipment. Metropolitan quantum-network study

Which engineering measures help—and what they cannot fix
- Adaptive optics: can correct some turbulence-driven wavefront effects, but cannot make an opaque cloud transparent. Adaptive-optics field experiment
- Spatial and spectral filtering: can reject some background light entering the receiver; low-noise detectors can improve signal discrimination. The 53 km daylight experiment combined single-mode fibre coupling with low-noise upconversion detectors.
- Aperture and beam design: influence diffraction and how much of the transmitted light the receiver can collect.
- Acquisition, pointing, and tracking: help maintain alignment between terminals, but cannot guarantee an unobstructed path or an available satellite pass.
These measures target different limits; they do not eliminate weather losses or guarantee link availability. NASA workshop report NASA quantum communications overview

- Weather and atmospheric path: visibility, cloud or fog, and the length of the route through the atmosphere.
- Daylight and background rejection: sky brightness as well as receiver filtering and detector characteristics.
- Geometry: distance, elevation, apertures, and diffraction.
- Turbulence: its severity and the extent to which the system can correct its effects.
- Alignment: acquisition, pointing, and tracking accuracy.
QKD security properties are separate from channel reliability: a protocol cannot produce useful key material when too little signal arrives or the optical link is absent.
