Water-altered rock on Mars shows that liquid water or water-bearing fluids once reacted with the rock. That makes the site relevant to the search for ancient life: water can create habitable conditions, change rock chemistry, and leave minerals that may preserve traces. But water alteration is geological evidence—not proof that life existed. NASA’s latest account of Perseverance’s work in Jezero Crater describes multiple kinds of water interaction, while a separate sample from the crater has been identified as containing potential, not confirmed, biosignatures.
What does water-altered rock tell us?
When water-bearing fluids react with rock, they can change its minerals and leave clues such as mineral veins or altered grains. Those clues establish that water interacted with the rock; they do not establish why the water was there or whether organisms were present. NASA’s overview of Perseverance’s water-altered rocks describes the geological significance of these findings.

Three claims need to be kept distinct:
- Water was present: mineral and texture evidence can show that water or water-bearing fluids affected a rock.
- The environment may have been habitable: liquid water can provide conditions suitable for life as we know it, depending on other factors.
- Life was present: this requires evidence that supports a biological explanation and rules out plausible non-biological alternatives.
Evidence for the first claim can make the second plausible. Neither one alone proves the third.
What has Perseverance found in Jezero Crater?
Jezero preserves different kinds of rocks and settings, so its geological record is not a single, simple account of a lake. Sedimentary deposits formed through water-related processes, while igneous rocks formed from molten material and were later affected by water. NASA’s Perseverance mission science overview describes the rover’s work with this diverse collection of rocks and samples; NASA has also reported on igneous rocks on Jezero’s crater floor.

- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- MARS ROVER PERSEVERANCE & INGENUITY HELICOPTER – 4.5 Sheet Model with a challenging difficulty level. Assembled Size: Rover: 4.92 L x 3.54 W x 2.95 H inches. Helicopter: 1.02 L x 1.30 W x 0.79 H inches. 1:30 Scale.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
The distinction matters because a rock’s origin, later alteration, and ability to preserve evidence are separate questions. A sedimentary setting can bury material, while an igneous rock can record its own formation history and later chemical changes. Neither type is automatically evidence of life.
What did the latest Margin Unit findings show?
In a report published September 21, 2026, NASA/JPL described Perseverance’s exploration of the Margin Unit, along the inner edge of Jezero’s crater rim. The rover analyzed more than 185 bedrock targets using its instrument suite. The observations reveal contrasting degrees of water interaction across the unit, rather than one uniform rock history. The count is a mission-report figure for analyzed targets, not a count of water episodes or biosignatures. See NASA/JPL’s Margin Unit report.

Higher ground: olivine-rich rock with little water evidence
At higher elevations, Perseverance examined coarse, crystalline, olivine-rich rock showing almost no evidence of water interaction. Olivine is a mineral in igneous rocks, and its presence here helps distinguish this material from the more altered rocks lower down.
Lower ground: fractured olivine, silica, and carbonate
Lower-elevation rocks show olivine grains fractured with silica between them, as well as fractures filled with carbonate. NASA interprets the Margin Unit as a place where different aqueous systems intersected. One inferred episode involved carbon-dioxide-rich groundwater reacting with olivine and leaving carbonate ridges in fractures. The findings establish a relative sequence of water interactions, but not their absolute ages.

On Earth, water reacting with olivine can release hydrogen that some microbes use as an energy source. Carbonate and silica can also help lock in traces of past microbial activity. These are reasons the Martian minerals matter to habitability and preservation studies; they are not evidence that Martian microbes consumed hydrogen or lived in the Margin Unit.
What is a potential biosignature?
A potential biosignature is a feature that could be associated with past life but needs further study before scientists can determine whether it has a biological origin. NASA uses that provisional language for the Sapphire Canyon sample collected from the Cheyava Falls rock; it does not mean life has been confirmed. NASA announced the assessment on September 10, 2025, after peer-reviewed publication: NASA’s Sapphire Canyon announcement.

Perseverance encountered Cheyava Falls in July 2024 in the Bright Angel formation, an ancient riverbed in Jezero’s Neretva Vallis, and collected the Sapphire Canyon sample. NASA’s earlier description of the Cheyava Falls rock discussed evidence of past water, organic material, and distinctive spots associated with chemical reactions that microbes could use for energy. Those features drew scientific interest, but they do not by themselves establish a biological origin.

Perseverance examines rock textures, mineralogy, elemental composition, and organic compounds. NASA says its instruments can detect microscopic fossil-like structures and chemical changes that may have been left by ancient microbes. A life-related interpretation depends on whether multiple lines of evidence fit together and whether non-biological processes could explain the same observations. NASA’s discussion of the rover’s Mars-rock discovery and its Sapphire Canyon announcement describe a potential biosignature, not a final resolution.

When comparing a Martian rock or sample, ask what kind of evidence it provides:
- Rock origin: Is it a sedimentary deposit, an igneous rock, or an igneous rock altered later by water?
- Water evidence: Are there mineral veins, alteration minerals, hydrated silica, or a sedimentary setting?
- Preservation potential: Could the setting have trapped and preserved organic or textural traces?
- Strength of the life claim: Does the evidence show possible habitability, a potential biosignature, or confirmed biology?
- Timing: Is the evidence about the relative order of events, or does it establish an absolute age?
These distinctions prevent evidence of water, an environment that might support life, and a possible biosignature from being treated as interchangeable.
What remains unknown?
The Margin Unit observations reported in 2026 do not establish the absolute ages of the individual water interactions, and water alteration alone does not show that life existed. The Sapphire Canyon sample remains described by NASA as containing potential biosignatures. The available NASA accounts do not resolve whether those features were produced by biology or non-biological processes.
