Launched on October 12, 1964, it carried pilot Vladimir M. Komarov, scientist Konstantin P. Feoktistov and physician Dr. Boris G. Yegorov for 24 hours 17 minutes. NASA’s historical chronology labels it the “First 3-man crew.”
The mission mattered because it tested whether one spacecraft could support specialists with different jobs at the same time. It was not the first human spaceflight and should not be described as the first multi-person flight of any size. Its specific milestone was the first crewed flight with three people aboard.

What “first multicrew spaceflight” means
“Multicrew” can be used loosely to mean any flight carrying more than one person. For Voskhod 1, the precise historical claim is narrower: it was the first spaceflight to carry three crew members. That wording matters because the mission was neither the first time a human had reached space nor the first flight involving multiple people in every possible sense.

The achievement was therefore about crew capacity and organization. A two-person spacecraft and a three-person spacecraft impose different demands on seats, life-support equipment, procedures, communications and the division of work. Voskhod 1 demonstrated that a small orbital vehicle could carry a pilot alongside specialists whose principal duties were scientific and medical.
NASA’s chronology records the milestone as “First 3-man crew.” That short label is the safest summary of what Voskhod 1 achieved. It does not claim that the mission set every other spaceflight record, nor does it provide a ranking of the flight’s political or safety importance.
Who flew on Voskhod 1?
Vladimir M. Komarov, pilot
Komarov was responsible for piloting the spacecraft. In a mission built around a newly adapted cabin and an unusual crew arrangement, the pilot’s role included maintaining operational control while the other two men carried out their specialist duties.

Konstantin P. Feoktistov, scientist
Feoktistov served as the scientific member of the crew. His presence represented the idea that a flight could include a working scientist rather than relying exclusively on pilots or test specialists. The available technical-history description does not provide an experiment-by-experiment account, so his role should not be expanded into a detailed activity list that the source does not document.
Dr. Boris G. Yegorov, physician
Yegorov was the physician aboard. His assignment made Voskhod 1 the first Soviet crewed mission to include a doctor as part of a three-person specialist team, according to the crew-role description in NASA’s technical history. The source supports the medical-biological purpose of the mission in broad terms, but not a complete catalog of medical observations or results.
How Voskhod 1 was built
Voskhod 1 was not an entirely new spacecraft family designed from a blank sheet. NASA’s technical history describes it as a modified Vostok vehicle adapted to accommodate multiple crew members. Engineers changed the existing design to create a multi-seat cabin and support a different kind of operation.

That approach offered a way to reach a new crew-size milestone without waiting for a completely new spacecraft. It also imposed constraints. The cabin had to support three people, their equipment and the systems needed to keep them alive while remaining within the limits of a vehicle originally developed for a smaller crew arrangement.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safety limitations recorded in the technical history
The NASA technical-history entry specifically notes that the crew flew without spacesuits, ejection seats or an escape tower. Those were serious design limitations, but the source does not provide a numerical estimate of the risk or a comparison with a later safety standard. The defensible conclusion is that the spacecraft lacked several forms of individual or launch-escape protection that readers may expect from later crewed vehicles.
The absence of spacesuits also shaped the operational environment inside the cabin. A spacesuit can provide an independent pressure boundary and support emergency procedures; without one, the crew depended more directly on the spacecraft’s shared cabin systems. Voskhod 1 should therefore be understood as a tightly constrained engineering demonstration, not as a modern-style crew capsule with redundant personal escape equipment.
What the mission was intended to test
Voskhod 1 had several related objectives rather than one narrowly defined experiment. NASA’s technical history describes the flight as a test of the new multi-seat spacecraft and an examination of how a group of cosmonauts with different scientific and technical specialties could work together in orbit.
Testing a multi-seat spacecraft
The first objective was operational: determine whether the modified vehicle could support a three-person crew during a real space mission. That included the practical demands of living and working in the cabin, coordinating procedures and maintaining the spacecraft while more than one specialist performed mission tasks.
Studying specialist cooperation
The crew’s composition was itself part of the test. Komarov, Feoktistov and Yegorov brought different professional backgrounds, allowing mission planners to examine whether a pilot, scientist and physician could contribute as a coordinated team rather than as interchangeable operators.

Physical-technical and medical-biological research
The technical-history entry also lists physical-technical and medical-biological research. Those categories indicate the broad areas of investigation, including spacecraft-related technical work and observations relevant to human health in flight. They do not establish a full inventory of instruments, procedures, measurements or outcomes, so claims about particular experiments should be treated cautiously unless supported by a dedicated mission record.
When it flew and how long it lasted
NASA’s historical flight table gives Voskhod 1 a launch date of October 12, 1964, and a total flight time of 24 hours 17 minutes. Those are historical mission figures recorded in NASA’s chronology, not modern survey statistics or an estimate assembled from later summaries.
The duration places the flight in the category of a short orbital mission. It was long enough to exercise the spacecraft and crew as an operating system rather than merely demonstrate launch and re-entry, while still falling far short of the extended stays that later space stations made routine. The available sources do not establish a complete hour-by-hour timeline, exact orbital parameters or a detailed account of every onboard activity.

Voskhod missions are sometimes discussed together because they used related spacecraft and occurred close together in the early space race. Their records should nevertheless be kept separate.
| Mission | Milestone identified in NASA’s chronology | What that milestone means |
|---|---|---|
| Voskhod 1 | First 3-man crew | First crewed spaceflight carrying three people |
| Voskhod 2 | First extravehicular activity | First mission in NASA’s chronology associated with a spacewalk outside the spacecraft |
Voskhod 2’s extravehicular-activity record does not turn Voskhod 1 into a spacewalk mission, and Voskhod 1’s three-person record does not describe Voskhod 2. Keeping the milestones distinct prevents a common historical error: treating the entire Voskhod program as though every achievement belonged to the same flight.
Why the three-person configuration was important
It changed the meaning of a crew
A crew of three could divide responsibilities by specialty. One person could concentrate on piloting, another on scientific work and another on medical observations. That arrangement anticipated a model that later became normal in human spaceflight: missions staffed not only by pilots but also by scientists, engineers, physicians and other specialists.

It tested the limits of a compact cabin
Adding a person is not simply a matter of adding another seat. The spacecraft must provide enough volume, environmental control, communications access, restraints and procedures for everyone to work safely. Because Voskhod 1 was based on a modified Vostok design, its achievement also demonstrated how an existing vehicle could be adapted for a new operational purpose.
It made teamwork part of the mission hardware
The spacecraft was only one part of the experiment. The flight also tested scheduling, communication and cooperation among people with different training. A mission can have capable individuals and still fail if responsibilities overlap or essential tasks are neglected. Voskhod 1’s crew composition made those organizational questions visible in a way a single-occupant flight could not.

The strongest points in the available historical record are the launch date, flight duration, crew names, assigned roles, modified-Vostok design and first-three-person distinction. NASA’s historical table is the clearest source for the date, duration and milestone, while NASA’s technical-history entry supplies the broader mission-purpose, spacecraft and crew-role context.
Several details are not established by those concise records. They do not provide a complete flight transcript, an experiment-by-experiment results table, a full orbital data set or a sourced explanation of Soviet leadership motives. They also do not support a numerical assessment of how dangerous the missing escape systems made the mission. A careful account should identify those limits rather than fill them with speculation.
Common misconceptions about Voskhod 1
“It was the first human spaceflight.”
No. Voskhod 1 was the first three-person crewed spaceflight. The first-human-spaceflight distinction belongs to an earlier milestone and is not the claim attached to this mission.

“It was the first multi-person flight of any kind.”
That wording is too broad. The historically precise description is the first flight with three crew members. Calling it the first multi-person flight without specifying the crew size erases the distinction NASA’s chronology makes.

“All Voskhod achievements happened on Voskhod 1.”
No. NASA’s chronology associates Voskhod 2 with the first extravehicular activity. Voskhod 1’s defining achievement was its three-person crew.
“The mission had a fully documented list of experiments in the standard summaries.”
The available technical-history summary identifies physical-technical and medical-biological research, but it does not enumerate every experiment or result. More detailed claims require a dedicated primary mission record.
Voskhod 1’s place in spaceflight history
Voskhod 1 occupies a specific position between the earliest single-occupant missions and the later era of larger crews and specialized orbital work. Its importance lies less in duration than in the operating model it tested: a pilot sharing a spacecraft with a scientist and a physician.
The mission showed that a crewed vehicle could be organized around complementary expertise, even though the spacecraft remained a constrained adaptation of an earlier design. It also exposed the engineering compromises involved in increasing capacity quickly, including the absence of spacesuits, ejection seats and an escape tower recorded in the technical history.
For readers asking what Voskhod 1 was, the most accurate answer is therefore concise but specific: it was the Soviet Union’s October 1964 test of a modified Vostok spacecraft carrying the first three-person crew into space. Its lasting historical value comes from combining a new crew-size record with an early demonstration of specialist teamwork in orbit.
