The Cambrian explosion was a geologically rapid diversification of animal life near the beginning of the Cambrian Period, roughly 541–485 million years ago. Major animal lineages became common in the fossil record, and marine ecosystems gained burrowing, active movement, predation and more complex food webs.
Animals did exist before the Cambrian. During the preceding Ediacaran Period, which lasted about 635–539 million years ago, seas contained sponges and other soft-bodied organisms. Fossils of animals such as Kimberella and Dickinsonia, along with tracks and burrows, show that the Cambrian did not create animal life from nothing.

What was the Cambrian explosion in simple terms?
“Cambrian explosion” is a metaphor for a rapid evolutionary radiation, not a literal instant when animals suddenly appeared. Near the beginning of the Cambrian, many animal body plans and major lineages became widespread and conspicuous in rocks. The change was especially visible in marine environments, where animals began moving through sediment, feeding actively, hunting, building protective shells or spines, and interacting in increasingly complex food webs.
The Cambrian Period is dated by the Smithsonian to approximately 541–485 million years ago. By its end, nearly all animal phyla that exist today had appeared in some form in the fossil record. That statement concerns broad lineages, not every modern species: most species living today evolved much later, and several unusual Cambrian groups eventually disappeared.

The word “explosion” can describe different intervals. Some accounts use it for the entire Cambrian Period; others mean an especially fast radiation early in the period, lasting perhaps 20–40 million years. The U.S. National Park Service summarizes the major diversification as occurring over about 40 million years, while the Natural History Museum emphasizes a short initial burst followed by slower evolutionary change. These descriptions refer to different time scales rather than mutually exclusive events.
A timeline from the Ediacaran to the Cambrian
| Interval | Approximate date | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|---|
| Ediacaran Period | About 635–539 million years ago | Animals and other large organisms lived in marine settings. Body fossils, trails and burrows are known, although many organisms are difficult to classify. |
| Late Ediacaran | Near 580 million years ago and later | Soft-bodied seafloor communities included frond-, ribbon- and quilt-shaped forms. Worm-like animals made burrows and tracks. |
| Early Cambrian radiation | Roughly the first 20–40 million years of the Cambrian, depending on definition | Hard parts became common, animal lineages diversified, and evidence for movement, feeding, predation and ecological engineering expanded. |
| End of the Cambrian | About 485 million years ago | Nearly all modern animal phyla had representatives in the fossil record, although many individual Cambrian forms later vanished. |
Dates are approximate because boundaries are defined by geological markers and are refined as new fossils and dating methods become available.
Did animals exist before the Cambrian explosion?
Yes. Pre-Cambrian animals are established by both body fossils and trace fossils. The Ediacaran, the period immediately before the Cambrian, contained organisms large enough to leave visible impressions in sediment. The Natural History Museum reports body fossils of Kimberella and Dickinsonia, as well as numerous trails and burrows.

What Ediacaran body fossils tell us
Dickinsonia had a flattened, quilted body and could reach substantial size. Kimberella had a more mobile, bilaterally organized form and is often discussed in connection with early animal evolution. Their exact relationships to living animal groups remain debated, because Ediacaran bodies can look unlike any organism alive today and are preserved mainly as impressions rather than mineralized skeletons.
Other Ediacaran organisms were frond-shaped, ribbon-like or arranged in quilted modules. Some may represent early members of animal lineages; others could be evolutionary experiments that left no living descendants. It is therefore accurate to say that animals lived in the Ediacaran, while avoiding the stronger claim that every Ediacaran fossil can be assigned confidently to a modern phylum.
Why tracks and burrows matter
Trace fossils record behavior rather than the animal’s body. Trails show that an organism moved across the seafloor; burrows show that it penetrated or occupied sediment. Near the end of the Ediacaran, worm-like animals produced such structures. These traces demonstrate movement and interaction with the seafloor even when the soft body itself was not preserved.

A 2025 Natural History Museum research report stresses that many key animal characteristics were already developing in the Late Ediacaran. The report’s significance is not that it settles every family relationship, but that it reinforces the distinction between an animal’s evolutionary origin and the first time its body happens to fossilize. As Natural History Museum scientist Dr Zekun Wang put it: “Life in the Ediacaran was no longer microscopic, but typically, it wasn’t able to move along the seafloor.”

The apparent abruptness is partly a preservation effect. Soft tissues decay quickly and usually leave no fossil. Shells, spines, teeth and mineralized skeletons survive burial and geological alteration much more readily. When animals began producing abundant hard parts, they became dramatically easier to detect in ordinary rocks.
Hard parts increased visibility
A first shell fossil is not necessarily the evolutionary origin of the animal that made it. A lineage may have existed earlier as a soft-bodied form, leaving only rare impressions or traces. The Cambrian increase in shells and other durable structures therefore records both biological innovation and a change in what the fossil record can preserve.
Trace fossils can predate body fossils
Trilobites, for example, left tracks before their hard exoskeletons became common as body fossils. This shows why “first appearance” must be qualified. Body-fossil first appearances, trace-fossil evidence and molecular-clock estimates can produce different dates for the same lineage.
Exceptional deposits reveal the missing soft-bodied diversity
Most rocks preserve only a biased sample of ancient life. Exceptional deposits such as the Burgess Shale preserve soft anatomy alongside hard parts, exposing a much broader range of Cambrian forms than standard fossil beds do. Such deposits do not eliminate sampling bias, but they show that the Cambrian ecosystem contained many delicate organisms that would otherwise be invisible.

Burrowing reshaped the seabed
Earlier seafloor communities were often relatively stationary. As animals began burrowing more deeply and frequently, they mixed sediment in a process called bioturbation. This disturbed microbial mats, redistributed nutrients and could carry oxygen into previously less-oxygenated sediment. Burrowing created new habitats while making existing ones more difficult for organisms that depended on an undisturbed surface.
Active movement and feeding opened niches
Animals that crawled, swam or probed sediment could reach food unavailable to stationary organisms. Armored animals could graze or scavenge while reducing their vulnerability to attack. More active feeding divided resources by location, depth and size, allowing several kinds of animals to coexist in the same broad environment.
Predation changed evolutionary incentives
Predation is one proposed driver of Cambrian diversification. Once animals hunted one another, natural selection favored defensive shells, spines, burrowing, faster movement and improved sensory or feeding structures. This interaction can produce an evolutionary feedback loop: better defenses favor better attacks, which in turn favor still better defenses.
Planktonic food webs expanded
Increasingly productive planktonic communities supplied energy higher in the water column. That helped support suspension feeders, active swimmers and predators, extending ecological complexity beyond the sediment surface.
Which animals appeared in the Cambrian?
The Cambrian fossil record includes representatives of many lineages that remain important today, along with forms that were evolutionary experiments.
| Group or example | What it represents | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Trilobites and other arthropods | Jointed animals with exoskeletons; trilobites are among the most recognizable Cambrian fossils. | Their hard parts preserve readily, so body fossils can overrepresent their visibility compared with soft-bodied animals. |
| Molluscs | Early members of the lineage that includes modern snails, clams and squid. | Early forms could look very different from familiar modern molluscs. |
| Echinoderms | Early relatives of starfish and sea urchins. | Cambrian echinoderms included body plans unlike most living representatives. |
| Annelid and priapulid worms | Segmented-worm relatives and priapulid-like burrowers that document active sediment use. | Soft bodies and incomplete fossils make precise relationships difficult in some cases. |
| Early chordates | Animals on the evolutionary branch that includes vertebrates, including jawless forms. | A chordate is not the same as a modern fish; early members lacked many later vertebrate features. |
| Anomalocaris, Opabinia, Wiwaxia and Kylinxia | Distinctive Cambrian organisms illustrating the range of anatomy and feeding strategies. | Some belong near modern lineages, while others represent branches with no living descendants. |
What caused the Cambrian explosion?
No single trigger has been demonstrated. The evidence supports an interaction among environmental conditions, ecological competition, developmental change, behavior and preservation.

| Proposed factor | How it could contribute | What the evidence can and cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| More available oxygen | Higher oxygen levels could support larger bodies, active movement and energetically expensive behavior. | Rising oxygen is a plausible enabling condition, not a proven one-step cause that explains every appearance. |
| Predation and defensive arms races | Hunting could favor armor, spines, burrowing, speed and new sensory structures. | Predator-prey interactions are visible in some fossils and traces, but their timing and importance varied by environment. |
| Burrowing and ecological engineering | Animals mixing sediment created new habitats and altered oxygen and nutrient distribution. | Trace fossils demonstrate behavior; they do not by themselves identify every burrow maker. |
| Developmental flexibility | Changes in embryonic patterning could generate new appendages, segments and body arrangements. | Developmental mechanisms help explain how novelty can arise, but fossil evidence rarely preserves the developmental process directly. |
| Food-web expansion | Planktonic production and active feeding supplied energy to more ecological roles. | Food-web reconstruction combines fossils, sedimentology and ecological inference, so details remain provisional. |
| Improved preservation | Shells, spines and exceptional deposits made animals easier to find in rocks. | Preservation changes the visibility of evolution; it does not itself create the biological diversification. |
Because these factors overlap, the most defensible explanation is an interacting system rather than a single “switch.” Environmental change may have made diversification possible, while behavior and ecological competition helped determine which forms spread. Better preservation then made the result appear especially abrupt.

Classification combines several kinds of evidence rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Body architecture: Symmetry, repeated segments, appendages, gut structures and tissue organization can indicate an animal affinity.
- Behavioral traces: Directed trails, feeding marks and burrows reveal movement or interaction even when the body is absent.
- Functional anatomy: A structure that works as a jointed limb, rasping organ or muscular proboscis can constrain possible relationships.
- Stratigraphic position: The rock layer and its radiometric or relative age establish when the organism lived.
- Comparison with living groups: Shared anatomical features can place a fossil near arthropods, molluscs, echinoderms, worms or chordates, but unusual Cambrian forms may not fit neatly into any modern category.
Molecular-clock studies provide another line of evidence by estimating when living lineages may have shared ancestors. Those estimates are not the same as the age of the oldest body fossil, and they depend on calibration choices and evolutionary assumptions. Fossil data and molecular inference should therefore be compared, not treated as interchangeable dates.
Common misconceptions about the Cambrian explosion
“Did life suddenly appear in the Cambrian?”
No. Life is vastly older than the Cambrian, and animals lived in the Ediacaran. The Cambrian marks a rapid diversification and a sharp increase in fossil visibility, not the beginning of life.
“Did every modern animal species appear at once?”
No. The event concerns major lineages and broad body plans. Modern species, genera and many familiar anatomical details evolved over later intervals.

“Were all Ediacaran organisms animals?”
No. Some were animals, some may have been close relatives of animals, and some may have belonged to extinct groups with no direct modern equivalent. Body fossils and traces establish pre-Cambrian animal life without resolving the identity of every Ediacaran form.

“Was the Cambrian explosion instantaneous?”
No. “Explosion” compresses millions of years of evolutionary and ecological change. Depending on the definition, scientists may mean an early 20–40-million-year radiation or the broader Cambrian interval.
“Was oxygen the single cause?”
Oxygen availability is one proposed enabling condition. The cited evidence also points to predation, burrowing, food webs, developmental change and preservation, so a single-cause explanation is not established.
What is firmly established—and what remains uncertain?
Several conclusions are robust: animals predated the Cambrian; Ediacaran seas contained body fossils and traces; Cambrian rocks record a rapid expansion of animal diversity; hard parts improved preservation; and ecological behaviors such as burrowing and predation changed marine environments.
Uncertainty is concentrated in the details. Scientists continue to debate the exact start and end of the “explosion,” the evolutionary placement of some Ediacaran and Cambrian organisms, the relative contribution of oxygen versus ecological interactions, and how much of the apparent suddenness reflects gaps in preservation. New fossil sites, improved imaging and better geological dating can shift those interpretations without overturning the central conclusion that animal life existed before the Cambrian radiation.
The bottom line
The Cambrian explosion was a rapid, geologically brief diversification of animal forms and ecological behaviors, concentrated near the beginning of the Cambrian Period. It made many animal lineages conspicuous in the fossil record and transformed marine ecosystems through movement, burrowing, active feeding and predation. Animals did not first appear during this event: Ediacaran fossils and traces show that animal life was already present, although mostly soft-bodied, less mobile and harder to preserve.
