Nintendo’s 1991 Campus Challenge used a custom cartridge combining Super Mario Bros. 3, Pin Bot and Dr. Mario in a timed scoring competition. The one known surviving original was found at a New York garage sale in 2006 and resold on eBay in 2009 for $20,100, according to Guinness World Records.
What was on the Campus Challenge cartridge?
The cartridge brought three games together for Nintendo’s 1991 Campus Challenge: Super Mario Bros. 3, Pin Bot and Dr. Mario. Brian Parker’s 2009 account in NintendoAGE describes it as a custom cartridge made specifically for the event, rather than a standard retail game. NintendoAGE, “Nintendo Campus Challenge” (2009).

How did the competition work?
Competitors moved through a timed sequence of objectives across the three games. NintendoAGE reports that they had to collect 25 coins in Super Mario Bros. 3, reach 100,000 points in Pin Bot, then score in Dr. Mario before time ran out. The account describes a combined contest format, not three separate full games played without a shared time limit.

NintendoAGE says the event visited 58 college campuses. That figure comes from the 2009 collector account; a Times of India report published October 6, 2026, rounds the scale to around 60 U.S. campuses and other locations. Times of India (October 6, 2026).

How did the surviving cartridge reach collectors?
Guinness World Records reports that a Nintendo employee had retained the cartridge, which collector Rob Walters bought at a New York garage sale in 2006. Walters later sold it on eBay in 2009 for $20,100. That is the documented sale price; it does not establish the cartridge’s present value or ownership. Guinness World Records, “Rarest Super Mario videogame”.
Were all the other cartridges destroyed?
The available accounts do not establish a complete inventory of how many cartridges Nintendo made or what happened to each one. NintendoAGE says most were destroyed and quotes the event organizer as estimating that three or four might have survived, although only one was known at the time of the 2009 article. It is therefore more precise to call the Walters cartridge the one known survivor than to state as settled fact that exactly one remains.
Was there a reproduction?
NintendoAGE reported in 2009 that a reproduction cartridge was available from RetroZone. That historical note does not confirm whether a reproduction can still be obtained. A reproduction is not an original competition cartridge.
