What VSCodium Removes from VS Code—and What That Means for Developers

VSCodium is not a separate editor built from scratch. It is a community distribution built from Microsoft’s VS Code source repository, with product configuration changed before the binaries are produced. The practical differences are Microsoft branding and product assets, telemetry defaults, the extension gallery, and the licensing terms attached to the distribution.

For developers, the choice is therefore less about editor features and more about workflow dependencies. VSCodium reports telemetry disabled in its builds and uses Open VSX, while Microsoft’s VS Code distribution uses the Visual Studio Marketplace and Microsoft-specific integrations. Your must-have extensions, their licenses, telemetry behavior, and any dependence on Microsoft services determine whether the change is painless or disruptive.

What VSCodium is, in practical terms

VSCodium starts with the same upstream Code – OSS source repository used to develop VS Code. Microsoft describes that repository as MIT-licensed source code. The downloadable Visual Studio Code product is a separate distribution: Microsoft adds proprietary assets, product configuration and other Microsoft-specific functionality, then releases that product under a Microsoft product license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VSCodium changes that product configuration and compiles its own binaries. The project describes a build process that clones Microsoft’s VS Code repository, lays down a customized product.json, and produces binaries in which Microsoft-specific functionality such as telemetry, gallery integration and logos is changed. That makes VSCodium a distribution choice, not wholly independent software.

  • APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*

The distinction matters when documentation, extensions or support instructions refer specifically to the official VS Code build. The editor shell, workbench concepts, settings model and much of the source remain closely related, but the services around that shell can differ. A tutorial that assumes the Visual Studio Marketplace, a Microsoft account integration or a Microsoft-only extension may not map directly to VSCodium.

VSCodium’s build process also downloads some prebuilt extensions and Electron components. Consequently, the statement that VSCodium binaries are MIT-licensed should not be read as saying every bundled component or every extension was authored by the VSCodium project or automatically carries the editor’s license.

What VSCodium changes compared with Microsoft’s VS Code

Area VSCodium Microsoft’s VS Code distribution Developer consequence
Source relationship Built from Microsoft’s VS Code source repository with customized product configuration. Microsoft’s branded distribution of the Code – OSS source plus Microsoft-specific customizations. Core editor behavior is closely related, but distribution-specific services and defaults can diverge.
Telemetry defaults The VSCodium project says telemetry is disabled in its binaries by default. Microsoft documents configurable telemetry, including an off setting for VS Code telemetry. VSCodium reduces the editor’s default reporting, while VS Code users can change its own telemetry setting.
Extension registry Uses Open VSX as its extension registry. Uses the Visual Studio Marketplace. A required extension may be absent, differently packaged, incompatible or subject to different licensing terms.
Branding and product assets Replaces Microsoft-specific logos and related product configuration. Includes Microsoft branding and proprietary product assets. Names, icons, update channels and some integration assumptions in documentation can differ.
Distribution license VSCodium says its binaries are MIT-licensed. The downloadable product is covered by Microsoft’s product license, despite the MIT license on the upstream source repository. Do not treat the source license, editor distribution license and extension licenses as interchangeable.

These are configuration and distribution differences rather than a claim that one editor has universally better performance or a larger feature set. Build details and extension availability can change, so verify the current state of any dependency that matters to your work.

Is VSCodium the same as VS Code?

It is best described as a closely related build, not the identical product. Both descend from the same upstream source, so many keyboard shortcuts, settings, language features and workflows are familiar. However, the binaries are produced with different product metadata and service endpoints. Those changes are visible whenever the editor needs a gallery, Microsoft account feature, branded asset or product-specific license.

Calling VSCodium “just VS Code without telemetry” is incomplete. Telemetry is one important change, but the extension registry, logos, product identifiers and licensing context also differ. Conversely, calling VSCodium an unrelated editor exaggerates the separation and can lead users to expect unnecessary retraining.

What remains familiar

  • The underlying Code – OSS project is the common foundation.
  • Many editor settings, workspace concepts, language tooling patterns and keyboard workflows are similar because they come from the same codebase.
  • Documentation written for the shared editor architecture can often be followed, provided it does not depend on a Microsoft-only service or extension.

What may not carry over exactly

  • Marketplace search results and one-click installation instructions that assume Microsoft’s gallery.
  • Extensions whose publisher has restricted licensing to the Visual Studio family.
  • Brand-specific icons, product names, account flows or integrations documented for Microsoft’s distribution.
  • Telemetry behavior, because the distributions set different defaults and extensions can report independently.

Does VSCodium have telemetry?

VSCodium says telemetry is disabled in its binaries. That statement describes the distribution’s editor defaults; it is not a guarantee that the computer will make no network requests or that every installed component is silent.

Microsoft’s telemetry documentation says, “Visual Studio Code collects telemetry data, which is used to help understand how to improve the product.” Microsoft identifies crash reports, error telemetry and usage data as telemetry categories and documents the telemetry.telemetryLevel setting. A VS Code user can set that user setting to off to silence VS Code telemetry events going forward. Microsoft also cautions that data may have been sent before the setting was changed.

The important boundary is between editor telemetry and extension telemetry. Microsoft states that extensions may collect their own usage data and that telemetry.telemetryLevel does not control those extension events. The same reasoning applies when using VSCodium: disabling the distribution’s editor telemetry does not rewrite the code of an extension, an operating-system service, a language server or another tool that makes its own requests.

What the setting does and does not control

Data source Controlled by the editor’s telemetry setting? What to check
VS Code’s own crash, error and usage events Microsoft documents control through telemetry.telemetryLevel, including off. Review the setting in the official VS Code build and understand that changing it affects future events.
VSCodium’s distribution-level editor telemetry VSCodium reports it disabled in its binaries. Confirm the behavior for the particular build you install; do not generalize to all network traffic.
Third-party extension telemetry No. Microsoft says the editor setting does not control it. Read the extension’s privacy policy, settings and documentation.
Operating-system services and external developer tools No. Audit those tools separately if your policy requires restricted network activity.

This distinction is useful for privacy reviews. If your requirement is “the editor itself should not send its product telemetry by default,” VSCodium’s stated default is relevant. If your requirement is “nothing launched from the development environment may communicate,” neither editor’s product setting is sufficient by itself.

How the extension registry changes your workflow

VSCodium uses Open VSX rather than the Visual Studio Marketplace. Microsoft’s Marketplace terms limit Marketplace offerings to Visual Studio products and services, and the VSCodium project notes that some extensions are restricted to official VS Code builds. The practical result is that an extension name alone is not enough to predict compatibility.

Microsoft’s FAQ says Microsoft extensions published to and acquired from the Visual Studio Marketplace are not licensed for use outside the Visual Studio family of products. It also explains that extension authors choose their own licenses and that some extensions are proprietary. Those are separate questions: an extension can be technically installable yet have terms that do not authorize use in VSCodium, or it can be unavailable in Open VSX altogether.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before switching, inventory your extensions

  1. List every extension that your projects, build scripts or team standards require. Separate essential tools from conveniences you could remove.
  2. For each essential extension, search Open VSX using the exact publisher and extension name. Check whether the listing is an official publication, a community build or a different project with a similar name.
  3. Read the extension’s stated license and any publisher conditions. Do not assume that the MIT license on the editor applies to an extension.
  4. Check compatibility notes, supported editor versions and required services. An extension may depend on Microsoft-specific APIs, account flows or Marketplace delivery.
  5. Install the candidate extension in a test profile or noncritical workspace and exercise the commands your team uses, including debugging, language services, authentication and remote features.

Why the available set can differ

  • A publisher may choose not to publish an extension to Open VSX.
  • A Marketplace extension may carry terms limited to official Visual Studio products.
  • An Open VSX listing may be a separately maintained build with a different release cadence.
  • An extension can depend on product identifiers, gallery APIs or Microsoft services that are not present in VSCodium.
  • Availability is volatile: a tool present today can be renamed, withdrawn or replaced by its publisher.

For a team, record the exact extension identifier, publisher, version and license that passed validation. This creates a repeatable setup rather than relying on a remembered display name.

Can you use VS Code extensions in VSCodium?

Sometimes, but there is no universal yes-or-no rule. Extensions distributed through Open VSX can be installed in VSCodium when their compatibility and license permit it. Some extensions available in Microsoft’s Marketplace may not appear in Open VSX, may require the official build, or may be licensed only for the Visual Studio family.

Do not promise that an extension will work merely because it works in VS Code. Check the specific publisher, package, version, dependencies and license. Conversely, the absence of a Marketplace listing does not prove that no technically suitable alternative exists; it means you need to evaluate the alternative on its own terms.

Symptoms of an extension mismatch

  • The extension cannot be found in the registry VSCodium uses.
  • Installation is offered but activation fails because a product-specific API or service is missing.
  • A command appears in the palette but authentication, synchronization or remote operations do not complete.
  • The extension installs but is not licensed for the distribution you are using.
  • A community-maintained build lags behind the version used by your team.

When a critical extension fails, the safe response is to identify the missing dependency or licensing restriction rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same package. If the extension is essential and has no acceptable Open VSX option, that dependency is a strong reason to keep Microsoft’s VS Code distribution for that workflow.

Licensing: source code, editor binaries and extensions are different layers

The licensing distinction is easy to miss because the words “open source” and “VS Code” are used for several related artifacts.

Artifact License or terms described in the documentation What it means
Code – OSS source repository MIT license, according to Microsoft’s repository description. The source code is available under MIT terms, subject to the license text and notices.
Microsoft’s downloadable VS Code product Microsoft product license, with Microsoft-specific customizations and proprietary assets. The product you download is not simply the repository’s MIT-licensed source presented without additional terms.
VSCodium binaries VSCodium says its binaries are MIT-licensed. The distribution presents itself under MIT terms, while included components can have their own notices.
Extensions and bundled components Varies by publisher or component; some extensions are proprietary. Review each extension’s license independently. The editor’s license does not automatically relicense it.

This layered view answers two common mistakes. First, seeing an MIT-licensed repository does not mean Microsoft’s branded product is distributed under exactly the same terms. Second, installing an extension into an MIT-licensed editor does not make that extension MIT-licensed.

How the differences affect everyday development

Starting a new project

If your project uses broadly available language tooling and ordinary editor features, the distribution difference may be barely visible. The first friction usually appears when your setup instructions tell contributors to install a particular Marketplace extension or sign in to a Microsoft service. Rewrite those instructions in terms of the exact registry, extension identifier and license your team has approved.

Maintaining a team setup

Standardization becomes more important when developers use different distributions. A shared list should state which editor builds are supported, which extensions are mandatory, where those extensions are obtained and what versions have been validated. Otherwise, one developer may install an official Marketplace package while another installs a differently maintained Open VSX package with similar branding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Debugging and language services

The editor distribution is only one part of a development toolchain. Language servers, debuggers, formatters, package managers and command-line tools may make their own network requests and carry their own licenses. Switching distributions does not remove those dependencies. Test the complete workflow, not just whether the editor opens a file and displays syntax highlighting.

Privacy and compliance reviews

VSCodium’s disabled telemetry default can simplify a policy that specifically concerns editor-generated telemetry. It does not complete a privacy review. Examine extension documentation, language servers, crash reporters, update mechanisms and operating-system services separately, and document what your organization actually requires.

A decision framework: which distribution fits?

Your priority More suitable starting point Reason to verify before committing
Editor telemetry disabled by default VSCodium Confirm that required extensions and external tools meet your broader network and privacy policy.
Access to a specific Microsoft-published Marketplace extension Microsoft’s VS Code distribution Marketplace terms may restrict use outside the Visual Studio family, and the extension may depend on the official build.
Open-source distribution and MIT-licensed editor binaries VSCodium Review licenses for bundled components and every extension separately.
Team instructions written around the Visual Studio Marketplace Microsoft’s VS Code distribution, unless the setup is adapted Check whether equivalent Open VSX packages exist and pass functional testing.
Microsoft-specific account or service integration Usually Microsoft’s VS Code distribution Confirm the exact integration is supported in the build your organization allows.
Maximum flexibility across registries and licenses Either, selected after an extension audit The deciding constraint is usually a particular extension, not the editor window itself.

No row makes one editor universally superior. The right choice is the one that satisfies your required extensions and licensing rules while meeting your telemetry and service requirements.

A low-risk migration plan

  1. Document the current environment. Export or record your extensions, versions, settings that affect builds, debugging profiles and external tools. Include extensions that run in the background, not only visible language packs.
  2. Classify dependencies. Mark each item as essential, optional, Microsoft-service-dependent, network-sensitive or license-sensitive. This reveals which differences matter before you change editors.
  3. Validate Open VSX availability. For every essential extension, check the publisher, package identity, version and license in the registry VSCodium uses. Treat similarly named packages as unproven until tested.
  4. Create a clean test profile. Install only the editor and the minimum required extensions. Open a representative project and run the real tasks your team performs, including tests, debugging, formatting, authentication and remote development where applicable.
  5. Check telemetry boundaries. Confirm the distribution’s editor behavior, then review each extension and external tool independently. Do not use the editor setting as evidence that the entire workstation is offline.
  6. Run a parallel period. Keep the existing editor available while you resolve missing extensions or service integrations. A parallel test avoids turning a distribution change into an emergency rollback.
  7. Publish a supportable standard. Give contributors the approved distribution, extension identifiers, versions, licenses and recovery instructions. State which workflows still require the official VS Code build, if any.

Common misconceptions and their corrections

“VSCodium guarantees zero network activity.”

No. Its project statement concerns telemetry disabled in its binaries. Extensions, language servers, update mechanisms, operating-system services and other tools can still communicate.

What to check when a switch goes wrong

An essential extension is missing

Confirm that you searched the registry VSCodium uses, then search by exact publisher and identifier rather than display name. If no legitimate package exists, decide whether a maintained alternative satisfies the project’s license and functional requirements. If not, keep the official distribution for that workflow.

The extension installs but a feature fails

Check the extension’s compatibility notes and dependencies. Authentication, remote services and product-specific APIs are common points of divergence. Test with a clean profile to distinguish an extension problem from an inherited setting or conflicting package.

A privacy review still finds traffic

Separate editor telemetry from extension and tool traffic. Inspect the responsible component’s documentation and settings; changing the editor’s telemetry setting cannot disable code that reports independently.

A license review raises an issue

Record the licenses for the editor, bundled components and extensions separately. A distribution’s MIT statement does not override a publisher’s terms, and technical installability does not establish that a license permits your intended use.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The practical bottom line for developers

VSCodium removes or replaces Microsoft-specific product configuration rather than replacing the underlying editor architecture. Its stated telemetry default, Open VSX registry, alternative branding and MIT-licensed binaries can be attractive when those properties match your organization’s requirements. Microsoft’s VS Code distribution remains the safer fit when a workflow depends on a Marketplace extension, Microsoft-specific integration or product support tied to the official build.

Make the decision with an extension and license inventory, not with the editor’s name. Verify every must-have extension in Open VSX, read its license, test the complete development workflow and treat extension telemetry as independent from editor telemetry. That process turns a potentially confusing product comparison into a concrete compatibility decision.
