There is no universal VPS CPU or RAM specification that guarantees a stable 24/7 YouTube stream. The right server depends first on whether it only relays an already-encoded feed or also encodes, renders, or composites video. Choose the stream format, calculate sustained outbound bandwidth with headroom, then test the actual workload and monitor it.
Start with what the VPS will do
A VPS forwarding a pre-encoded stream has a different workload from one that encodes video or builds scenes. Before comparing plans, write down the number of simultaneous streams, resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, and whether the server must encode, add overlays, composite scenes, or perform other processing.
- Relay: The video is encoded elsewhere; the VPS forwards the resulting feed. Its main sizing concern is sustained outbound capacity, alongside the resources used by the relay software.
- Software encoding: The VPS encodes the source using its CPU. CPU demand depends on the encoder, output format, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Hardware encoding: Encoding work is moved from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU. A generic VPS listing that mentions vCPUs does not establish that a compatible hardware encoder is available.
OBS’s system requirements documentation says CPU needs vary considerably with the chosen encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. That is why a generic number of vCPUs—or a generic RAM figure—cannot guarantee that an instance will handle your stream.
Choose the output format before sizing bandwidth
YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance lists these examples:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output format | Recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU specifications or a promise that a particular VPS can sustain the stream. YouTube’s recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC differ; use its current encoder settings guidance for the exact codec and format you plan to send.
Calculate the network capacity and transfer you need
- Set the target bitrate. Use the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate as the starting point. Include audio in the total stream bitrate when checking capacity.
- Add upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload bandwidth and says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. For example, a 17 Mbps stream calls for at least 20.4 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity after adding 20%.
- Scale for concurrent streams. Add the outbound bitrate of each simultaneous stream, then apply headroom to the combined requirement. If streams have different settings, calculate each one separately before adding them.
- Check the plan’s actual egress terms. Confirm sustained port capacity, monthly transfer allowance, and any throttling policy with the VPS provider. A listed port speed does not prove that continuous traffic at that rate is permitted.
Continuous streaming also consumes substantial monthly transfer. As a simple estimate, a constant 17 Mbps stream sends about 5.5 TB over a 30-day month using decimal terabytes, before protocol overhead; the 20% headroom is spare capacity, not extra video data unless the stream actually sends at a higher bitrate. Multiple streams multiply transfer use.

Test CPU and memory with the real workload
Official YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish a minimum vCPU count or RAM amount that works for every 24/7 VPS stream. A representative test is more useful than choosing an arbitrary specification.
- Use a trial or short-term instance if the provider offers one.
- Run the exact relay or encoder configuration you expect to use, with the intended output settings and number of streams.
- Test source material with motion and audio similar to the real stream. A static test image can understate the work required for a moving scene.
- Watch sustained CPU and memory use, dropped frames, and YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the test.
- Increase capacity or change the encoding path if the instance saturates or the stream becomes unstable, then repeat the test.
OBS notes that meeting basic system compatibility requirements does not guarantee successful streaming. Test the whole path to YouTube rather than treating a VPS specification sheet as proof of performance.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. The guidance calls for constant-bitrate encoding and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers. Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s current guidance and use the stream key provided for the intended YouTube broadcast.
Plan for continuity, not just peak specifications
A 24/7 stream needs more than enough compute and bandwidth at the moment it starts. Before committing to a provider, review its network-transfer limits, throttling rules, restart controls, support arrangements, and service terms. YouTube and OBS guidance supports testing and monitoring, but does not define a universal VPS uptime guarantee or a standard failover configuration; verify those details with the provider.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded-video loop rather than custom server-side rendering, running a VPS is not the only approach. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video tool. For StreamNeo, the workflow is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video to YouTube from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers it.
- The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.
Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and support from the StreamNeo team. Plans have the same features; only their duration changes. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
