What happens depends on the assistant, your account settings, your device and, for some services, whether you joined a speech-improvement program. A request can produce several separate records: the original audio, a transcript, typed text, and account or device metadata. Each can have a different retention rule.
The practical answer is therefore more precise than “your smart speaker records everything.” An Echo sends detected speech to the cloud when its wake word activates recording; Google says Assistant audio is not saved on its servers by default; and Apple says Siri audio is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. The controls and time limits below come from the companies’ current guidance, with Amazon’s specific periods taken from UK support pages.

Audio processing is not the same as permanent storage
A voice assistant has to process captured speech to recognize a request and respond. That processing may involve a device, a cloud service, or both, depending on the feature and hardware. Processing tells you what the system needed to do at that moment; it does not, by itself, tell you whether a copy is retained afterward.
Think of an interaction as several data layers:
- Audio recording: the sound captured after activation, including an accidental or “false wake” activation.
- Transcript: text generated from the spoken request.
- Typed request: text entered directly into an assistant interface.
- Interaction history and metadata: timestamps, device or service context, and information connected with an account or identifier.
A setting that stops saving audio may leave text history behind. Conversely, deleting a visible history entry may not describe every copy or sample covered by a service’s separate improvement program. Always read the setting’s scope, not just its label.

Amazon Alexa and Echo: the retention choices in UK support guidance
When an Echo activates
Amazon says an Echo signals when it detects its wake word and is recording audio to stream to the cloud. The signal indicates that recording and transmission have begun; it does not tell you how long the resulting interaction will be kept. Amazon also says users can review and delete recordings associated with their account, including audio created by a false wake, in Alexa Privacy or Voice History. Amazon device privacy guidance
Automatic deletion
Amazon’s UK automatic-deletion page offers 3-month and 18-month choices. The selected period applies to voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests associated with a chat, measured from the last request in that chat. In other words, a new request can extend the life of earlier items in the same conversation.

The same page offers “Don’t save recordings”. Amazon says new recordings are deleted after processing and previously saved recordings are deleted. Its UK device guidance says transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat, then are automatically deleted. The audio rule and the text rule therefore differ under this option. Amazon automatic deletion help
How to inspect or remove Alexa history
- Open the Alexa app or the Alexa Privacy page for your account.
- Open Voice History to see requests and identify accidental activations or recordings you no longer want stored.
- Delete individual items or use the available history-deletion control.
- Open the automatic-deletion setting and choose the shortest available period, or “Don’t save recordings,” if that is the behavior you want.
Menu names and available choices can change with device software and region. The 3-, 18-month and 30-day periods above are from Amazon UK documentation, so readers elsewhere should verify the options shown in their own account.

How to review or delete Google Assistant activity
- Sign in to the Google Account used with Assistant.
- Open My Activity and filter for Assistant activity or the relevant device and service.
- Review the text entries and associated information shown for each interaction.
- Delete individual entries or use the account’s available activity-deletion controls.
- Check the Assistant activity and Web & App Activity settings separately; changing audio-saving permission does not automatically erase text already stored.
The cited Google pages do not give one universal automatic-deletion duration for Assistant interaction text. Your account’s current controls are the authoritative place to check available auto-delete choices and their scope.
Apple Siri: default audio handling and the Improve Siri program
What happens when you do not opt in
Apple says Siri audio is not stored unless you enable Improve Siri and Dictation. Some Siri processing occurs on the device, depending on the feature and device. Apple also says request history and related information may be associated with a random, device-generated identifier rather than your Apple Account. Ask Siri & Privacy

What changes when improvement is enabled
Apple’s Improve Siri and Dictation notice says request history—including audio, transcripts and related data—may be retained for up to two years when you opt in. A small subset selected for human review may be kept beyond two years for ongoing improvement. Turning the improvement setting off stops future participation, but it does not make every historical copy instantly disappear under every deletion path. Improve Siri and Dictation & Privacy
Deleting Siri requests has limits
Apple’s privacy-features guidance describes a control for deleting Siri and Dictation requests associated with the identifier. It also explains two important limits: requests older than six months and reviewed samples may no longer be associated with that identifier, so they may not be deleted through that identifier-linked process. Separately, history stored on the device has its own deletion control. Apple privacy features

- Use the Siri and Dictation History deletion control presented on the device.
- Clear any device-stored Siri history using the separate device control.
Does a smart speaker record everything?
“Record everything” combines two different questions: whether the microphone is listening for an activation signal and whether full speech is sent to a server and retained. The cited policies do not support a blanket claim that every sound in a room is saved indefinitely.

For Echo devices, Amazon describes a wake-word event that triggers an indicator and cloud streaming. It also acknowledges that false wakes can create recordings and provides a way to review and delete them. For Google, the stated default is that audio recordings are not saved on Google servers, although text activity may still be stored when Web & App Activity is enabled. For Siri, Apple’s default says audio is not stored unless the user opts into improvement. These are policy descriptions, not an independent audit of backend deletion.
How to reduce the amount of assistant data retained
- Choose the shortest retention option available: on Alexa UK accounts, that can mean 3 months or “Don’t save recordings,” depending on whether you need audio history.
- Separate audio from text: disabling audio saving does not necessarily disable Assistant activity or transcripts.
- Review history periodically: inspect for false wakes, sensitive requests and devices you no longer use.
- Check every account: a shared household device can be linked to one account while phones, tablets or browsers use another.
- Disable improvement participation if desired: Apple’s two-year retention statement applies to the opt-in Improve Siri and Dictation program.
- Use physical controls when appropriate: mute a smart speaker’s microphone during private conversations, then confirm the device’s indicator shows the changed state.
- Recheck after updates: providers can change labels, defaults and available deletion periods by country, software version or account type.
What deletion does—and does not—prove
A deleted item should be understood in the context of the provider’s stated system. A visible history entry may represent audio, a transcript, or both. A setting may stop future collection while leaving existing records until a separate deletion action runs. Apple’s identifier-linked limitation demonstrates why age and review status matter: some older or reviewed samples are no longer reachable through the ordinary identifier-based deletion process.
Amazon’s “Don’t save recordings” wording still leaves a 30-day window for transcripts and typed requests after the last interaction in a chat, according to its UK guidance. Google’s audio default still allows text activity to appear in My Activity when Web & App Activity is enabled. Before treating a setting as a complete eraser, read which data type it covers and whether the clock starts at the request, the last interaction, or a later review step.
A practical privacy check for each household
- List every assistant-enabled device and the account signed into it.
- Open the provider’s privacy dashboard and identify whether audio saving, text activity and improvement programs are separate switches.
- Set the shortest retention that still supports features you actually use.
- Delete existing history, including entries created by false wakes or devices you have retired.
- Repeat the check after a major operating-system, app or device update and whenever the device changes hands.
No single retention number applies to all voice assistants. The reliable answer is assistant-specific: Alexa’s cited UK controls can remove recordings after processing or retain records for 3 or 18 months, Google’s cited default does not save audio while text activity may remain, and Siri’s default does not store audio unless its improvement program is enabled, under which request history may remain up to two years with limited exceptions.
