What Vite+ Hooks Do and When Each Lifecycle Hook Runs

Vite+ uses several different kinds of hooks, and they do not all run at the same time. Vite Task’s preX and postX scripts surround a task command; Git hooks run for repository events such as commits; and package-install scripts can call vp config to install or refresh the Git-hook dispatcher. Understanding which mechanism owns each step makes it much easier to predict, disable, or troubleshoot automation.

The shortest useful sequence is: vp run X can run preX, then X, then postX; an install can run prepare or postinstall, which may invoke vp config; and a commit can pass through Git’s configured hooks path to .vite-hooks/pre-commit, which commonly runs vp staged.

What “hooks” means in Vite+

Vite+ is a toolchain that combines Vite, Vitest, Oxlint, Oxfmt, Rolldown, tsdown, and Vite Task. In this context, “hooks” means software lifecycle automation, not a physical dependency or a single universal hook system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are three separate paths to keep distinct:

  • Package-script lifecycle: Vite Task optionally adds preX and postX around a script named X.
  • Git-hook infrastructure: vp hooks enable installs a generated dispatcher and points Git at it.
  • Project policy: a project-owned hook such as .vite-hooks/pre-commit decides what the repository actually does at commit time.

Package-script hooks are not Git hooks. A pretest script is controlled by Vite Task when you run a task; a pre-commit file is triggered by Git during a commit.

What runs before and after a Vite Task script?

The default sequence

Vite Task’s run.enablePrePostScripts option defaults to true. With that default, running script X through Vite Task follows this order when the corresponding package scripts exist:

  1. preX
  2. X
  3. postX

For example, running vp run test can execute pretest, then test, and finally posttest. If either companion script is absent, that step is simply omitted. The hooks surround the selected task; they are not tied to a Git event.

Where to configure it

Set the option in the workspace root’s vite.config.ts. Vite+ treats this as a workspace-level setting; putting run.enablePrePostScripts in an individual package configuration is an error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
export default defineConfig({
  run: {
    enablePrePostScripts: true,
  },
});

Use false when you want Vite Task to run only the requested script and skip automatic preX/postX discovery:

export default defineConfig({
  run: {
    enablePrePostScripts: false,
  },
});

Changing this value affects Vite Task’s run behavior. It does not disable Git’s dispatcher, remove a .vite-hooks/pre-commit file, or stop package-install scripts from calling vp config.

When this mechanism is useful

Use preX for preparation that must happen immediately before a task, such as generating an input that the task consumes. Use postX for cleanup or follow-up work that belongs to that task. Keep in mind that both are package scripts: they can run whenever the task is invoked through the Vite Task path and are independent of whether a Git repository is present.

How Vite+ Git hooks are assembled

The generated dispatcher

vp hooks enable installs or refreshes a generated dispatcher under the hooks directory, which defaults to .vite-hooks/_, and sets Git’s core.hooksPath to use it. The dispatcher is infrastructure: it provides the route through which Git invokes hook automation, but it does not define your project’s checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

vp hooks status reports three useful pieces of state: the saved preference, the dispatcher, and project-owned hook scripts. Read those separately. A present dispatcher does not tell you what policy the project will apply at commit time.

The project-owned pre-commit hook

The project-owned .vite-hooks/pre-commit file is the commit-time entry point for the repository’s policy. A typical file invokes vp staged. That command reads the staged block in the workspace’s vite.config.ts and applies the configured commands to staged files, such as vp check --fix.

This division of responsibility matters:

  • Dispatcher: generated Vite+ plumbing that Git reaches through core.hooksPath.
  • Project-owned hook: repository policy, including whether to invoke vp staged and which checks are configured.
  • Staged configuration: the commands and file handling used by vp staged.

Enabling the dispatcher therefore does not automatically choose linting, formatting, tests, or any other project check. Those decisions belong to the project-owned hook and its configuration.

What happens during a commit?

  1. Git looks at core.hooksPath, which Vite+ configured when the dispatcher was enabled.
  2. The generated dispatcher receives the Git hook event.
  3. The dispatcher routes the event to the project-owned .vite-hooks/pre-commit script.
  4. That script commonly runs vp staged.
  5. vp staged reads the staged block in vite.config.ts and runs its configured commands against staged files.

This is why a formatter or checker may run at commit time even though no preX package script is involved.

What runs during package installation?

prepare and postinstall

Projects commonly call vp config from a package manager’s prepare or postinstall script. When that lifecycle script runs, vp config installs or refreshes the Vite+ dispatcher and can also configure agent integration.

Because package installation can happen in development, continuous integration, a deployment image, or a published-package workflow, the result depends on the environment in which the install runs. The command is setup work; it is not the commit policy itself.

Suppressing setup in an environment

Set VP_GIT_HOOKS=0 when you need to disable hook execution and prevent lifecycle setup from reinstalling hooks in that environment. This is useful for CI jobs or other contexts where repository hooks should not be active.

HUSKY=0 is also honored for compatibility. That variable is commonly present in repositories that previously used another Git-hook manager, so honoring it lets an existing environment-wide switch suppress hook setup while a migration is in progress.

These environment controls are different from run.enablePrePostScripts. The latter governs Vite Task’s package-script wrapping; VP_GIT_HOOKS and HUSKY govern Git-hook execution and lifecycle setup.

How project creation and migration affect hooks

Creating a project

vp create can set up hooks as part of project creation. Use --hooks to force setup or --no-hooks to skip it. Choose explicitly when the repository’s policy requires hooks to be present or when setup is intentionally managed elsewhere.

Migrating an existing project

vp migrate can also set up hooks, with the same --hooks and --no-hooks controls. Migration is conservative: existing Husky, lefthook, simple-git-hooks, or yorkie configurations are preserved and a warning is issued rather than silently converting ownership to Vite+.

If the team wants the Vite+ workflow after such a warning, manual conversion is required. Review the existing manager’s files, decide which checks belong in the project-owned .vite-hooks scripts and staged configuration, then enable the Vite+ dispatcher deliberately. Do not assume migration has rewritten the old manager or removed its policy.

How to enable, inspect, and disable Vite+ hooks

Enable or refresh the dispatcher

  1. From the repository root, run vp hooks enable.
  2. Confirm the generated dispatcher is under .vite-hooks/_, unless the project uses another hooks directory.
  3. Check that Git’s core.hooksPath points to the Vite+ dispatcher.
  4. Run vp hooks status to inspect the preference, dispatcher, and project-owned scripts.
  5. Open .vite-hooks/pre-commit and the staged block in vite.config.ts to verify the policy that will run.

Refreshing is safe when the generated infrastructure has become stale: enabling again installs or refreshes the dispatcher without changing the project’s intended checks by itself.

Disable hooks completely

  1. Run vp hooks disable in the repository.
  2. Vite+ tears down the generated dispatcher.
  3. If Git’s core.hooksPath points to Vite+, the command unsets that setting.
  4. Vite+ stores a local disabled preference so lifecycle scripts do not reinstall the dispatcher until hooks are enabled again.

Disabling the dispatcher is not the same as setting run.enablePrePostScripts to false. If both systems are present, disable each one according to the behavior you want: task wrapping in the root configuration, Git automation with vp hooks disable.

Lifecycle mechanisms compared

Mechanism Trigger Timing Scope Main control
preX/postX vp run X Before and after script X Workspace root configuration run.enablePrePostScripts
Generated Git dispatcher Git hook event When Git invokes the configured hooks path Repository vp hooks enable or vp hooks disable
Project-owned pre-commit Git commit During commit processing Repository policy The .vite-hooks/pre-commit script
vp staged Called by a project-owned hook At the point that hook invokes it Staged files selected by configuration The staged block in vite.config.ts
vp config from prepare/postinstall Package installation lifecycle During the install script Installation environment and repository setup VP_GIT_HOOKS, HUSKY, and hook preference

Troubleshooting by symptom

A task unexpectedly runs another script first or afterward

Check the root vite.config.ts for run.enablePrePostScripts. If it is enabled, inspect package.json for matching preX and postX scripts. Remember that the setting must be in the workspace root, not a package-level configuration.

A commit does nothing

Run vp hooks status. Verify that the dispatcher exists, that Git’s core.hooksPath points to it, and that .vite-hooks/pre-commit is present. Then inspect whether that project-owned hook actually invokes vp staged and whether the staged block defines commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hooks return after an install

Look for vp config in prepare or postinstall. If the environment should not install hooks, set VP_GIT_HOOKS=0; HUSKY=0 is an additional compatibility switch. If the repository was intentionally disabled with vp hooks disable, check that the local disabled preference is still present and that a separate setup script is not overriding the intended state.

Migration reports another hook manager

Treat the warning as an ownership decision, not an automatic conversion. Existing Husky, lefthook, simple-git-hooks, or yorkie setups are preserved. Decide whether to retain that manager or manually move the policy into Vite+ files before enabling the Vite+ dispatcher.

A practical order for configuring a repository

  1. Decide whether Vite Task should run preX and postX; set run.enablePrePostScripts in the workspace root.
  2. Define the staged-file commands in the staged block of vite.config.ts.
  3. Create or review the project-owned .vite-hooks/pre-commit script, commonly with vp staged.
  4. Enable the Git dispatcher with vp hooks enable and inspect it with vp hooks status.
  5. Check install scripts for vp config and decide which environments should set VP_GIT_HOOKS=0 or HUSKY=0.
  6. For new or migrated projects, use --hooks or --no-hooks explicitly and resolve any preserved hook-manager configuration manually.

The key distinction to remember

Vite+ has no single “hook” that controls every event. Vite Task’s pre/post behavior wraps a named task; Git’s dispatcher connects repository events to project-owned scripts; vp staged performs the staged-file work selected by configuration; and package-install scripts can recreate the dispatcher through vp config. Configure, inspect, and disable each layer independently so a change intended for one lifecycle does not accidentally alter another.
