On an ESRB-rated game, content descriptors flag material that may have contributed to its rating or may matter to consumers. They supplement—not replace—the age-based rating category, and they are not a complete inventory of everything in the game. To understand a label, consider the category, the descriptors, and, when available, the rating summary.

What ESRB content descriptors tell you

ESRB content descriptors are short labels for content such as violence or drug use. They help explain a rating and alert consumers to particular material, but they do not tell the whole story on their own. ESRB says descriptors are applied relative to the assigned rating category and are not intended as a complete listing of content. ESRB Ratings Guide

The category and descriptors do different jobs: the category indicates the game’s age-appropriateness rating, while descriptors identify content signals that may have contributed to it or may interest or concern consumers. ESRB’s rating process considers content and context, including reward systems and player control, so the label is a judgment rather than a simple count of scenes. How ESRB violence descriptors differ

Violence

“Violence” refers to scenes involving aggressive conflict and may include bloodless dismemberment. The label does not, by itself, specify how frequently the content appears or explain the scene’s context. ESRB Ratings Guide

Fantasy Violence

“Fantasy Violence” describes violent actions of a fantasy nature involving human or non-human characters in situations that are easily distinguishable from real life. The key distinction is the clearly fantastical presentation, not an assurance that every player will find the content mild.

Intense Violence

“Intense Violence” signals graphic, realistic-looking physical conflict. It may involve extreme or realistic blood and gore, weapons, and depictions of human injury and death. It describes the presentation of conflict, rather than providing a complete account of every scene.

Drug Reference versus Use of Drugs

Drug Reference

“Drug Reference” means references to or images of illegal drugs. It does not mean the descriptor alone confirms that a character consumes drugs.

Use of Drugs

“Use of Drugs” means the consumption or use of illegal drugs. That is the narrow distinction from “Drug Reference”: depiction of use versus reference or imagery. Neither label alone tells you how often the content appears or supplies its full scene context. ESRB Ratings Guide

What “Mild” means

When an ESRB descriptor is preceded by “Mild,” the modifier indicates low frequency, intensity, or severity. It is a cue about the content, not a guarantee that it will be comfortable or suitable for every individual viewer. ESRB Ratings Guide

How to check a game before playing

  1. Read the age category and descriptors together. The category gives the age-rating signal; descriptors call out particular kinds of content. Do not treat one descriptor as the entire rating.
  2. Look for the rating summary. Summaries are available for many physical games and can add detail and context beyond the compact label. ESRB Ratings Guide
  3. Consider that the label may not name everything. ESRB explicitly says descriptors are not a complete content listing, so absence of a particular descriptor does not establish that related material is absent.
  4. Check interactive-element notices separately. ESRB notices can identify online interaction, location sharing, in-game purchases, or unrestricted internet access. These notices describe interactive features and do not affect the rating assignment. ESRB Ratings overview
  5. Use device parental controls if needed. Parental controls can help manage play, access to games by rating, and in-game spending; they are an additional tool, not part of the content descriptor itself. ESRB Ratings overview

Which games and ratings this guide covers

These definitions are for the ESRB system, most directly relevant to ESRB-rated games and US-facing listings. They should not be assumed to match the terminology or definitions used by rating systems in every country. ESRB says its rating system was founded in 1994 and that it is a founding rating authority of the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC); that context does not make ESRB descriptor wording universal. ESRB Ratings overview

ESRB uses different rating processes depending on whether a game is physically distributed or available digitally only. That is another reason to use the game’s available rating information and summary rather than infer the full content from a single label. ESRB rating process
