Choose a monitor arm whose listed VESA/FDMI mounting pattern exactly matches the monitor’s hole pattern. Measure the horizontal and vertical distance between hole centers in millimeters if the monitor manual does not state the pattern. A 100 × 100 mm pattern means 100 mm between hole centers in both directions; 75 × 75 mm means 75 mm in both directions. Pattern fit is only one check: the arm’s weight range and any model-specific installation limits must also accommodate the monitor.
What a VESA mount size actually describes
“VESA size” normally refers to the spacing of the mounting holes on the back of a flat display. The spacing is measured from the center of one hole to the center of the next, horizontally and vertically. It is written as width × height in millimeters, so the two numbers describe the hole pattern rather than the screen’s diagonal size.

VESA calls the broader mounting standard the Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI). Its stated purpose is “to define mounting interface standards for Flat Displays (FDs) such as flat panel monitors, flat displays and flat TVs.” The FDMI overview covers displays with a diagonal viewing area from 102 mm (4 inches) to 2286 mm (90 inches). That scope describes the kinds of displays addressed by the standard; it does not mean every display in that range uses one universal hole pattern.

The practical question is therefore not “Which VESA size do all monitors use?” It is “Which pattern does this monitor have, and does this particular arm list that pattern?” Two monitors with similar screen sizes can have different interfaces, while an arm can support one pattern, several patterns, or a proprietary attachment.

Find the monitor’s pattern before buying an arm
Use the manual or manufacturer specification first
Look for a section named VESA mount, mounting interface, FDMI, wall mounting, or monitor arm compatibility. The specification may give a value such as 75 × 75 mm or 100 × 100 mm. Treat the exact model number as part of the information: a product family can contain variants with different rear panels or stands.
Record the pattern exactly as printed, including both dimensions. Do not convert a square pattern into a single number when comparing products; the arm’s listing should show the same width and height, or explicitly state that it supports the monitor’s pattern.
Inspect the rear mounting area when the specification is silent
Look for four threaded mounting holes arranged in a square or rectangle. Remove only covers or a stand component that the monitor’s instructions identify as user-removable. Do not force a stand, trim, or rear cover, because the mounting interface can be recessed or surrounded by a model-specific bracket.

If four holes are visible but their spacing is not documented, measure from hole center to hole center. A ruler can work when the centers are easy to identify; calipers make the reading easier when the holes are recessed. Measure both directions independently and record the results in millimeters. A reading near 100 mm horizontally and 100 mm vertically indicates a 100 × 100 mm pattern; near 75 mm in both directions indicates 75 × 75 mm.

How to measure VESA mount holes accurately
- Power down and position the display safely. Disconnect cables and place the monitor on a stable, padded surface if the manufacturer’s instructions permit laying it down. Keep the panel supported so its weight is not resting on a fragile edge.
- Identify the mounting-hole centers. Find the four threaded holes intended for a bracket or arm. Measure to the center of each opening, not from the outside edges of the recess or the surrounding plastic.
- Measure horizontally. Measure the center of the left hole to the center of the right hole in the same row.
- Measure vertically. Measure the center of the upper hole to the center of the lower hole in the same column.
- Check the arrangement. Confirm that the four measurements form the same rectangular pattern: the two horizontal distances should agree, and the two vertical distances should agree. If they do not, recheck that you used the intended holes rather than nearby stand or enclosure openings.
- Write the result as width × height. For example, 100 mm horizontally and 100 mm vertically is 100 × 100 mm. If the pattern is rectangular, preserve both numbers instead of assuming it is square.
- Compare your measurement with the arm’s specification. Use the arm manufacturer’s stated pattern list, not a retailer’s generic “VESA compatible” label. If your measurement is ambiguous or falls between expected values, obtain confirmation for the exact monitor and arm models before ordering.
Small measurement errors can come from parallax, a recessed hole, or measuring the edge of a counterbore. When the result is close to a standard value, repeat the measurement with the display and tool aligned squarely to the rear panel. The goal is to identify the center-to-center spacing, not to estimate the diameter of the holes or the size of the surrounding recess.
Match the pattern to the monitor arm’s specification
An arm is compatible only when its mounting head is designed for the monitor’s listed pattern or for an adapter that the manufacturers document for that exact combination. The term “VESA-compatible” by itself does not establish which patterns are supported.
| Pattern or specification | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 75 × 75 mm | Hole centers are 75 mm apart horizontally and 75 mm apart vertically. | Choose an arm that explicitly lists 75 × 75 mm or an equivalent designation. |
| 100 × 100 mm | Hole centers are 100 mm apart horizontally and 100 mm apart vertically. | Choose an arm that explicitly lists 100 × 100 mm or an equivalent designation. |
| MIS-D 100/75 | The listing uses the MIS-D designation for both 100 × 100 mm and 75 × 75 mm patterns. | Verify that your monitor is one of those two patterns and then check the arm’s capacity and installation limits. |
| Pattern not listed or proprietary interface | The available information does not identify a standard hole pattern for the monitor. | Obtain model-specific instructions or confirmation from the monitor and arm manufacturers before buying hardware. |
One cited example is the LX Pro arm, whose specification lists MIS-D 100/75, covering 100 × 100 mm and 75 × 75 mm patterns. That is evidence about that model only. It should not be treated as proof that every arm supports both patterns, or that every monitor uses one of them.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck weight capacity separately from hole spacing
A matching pattern does not prove that an arm can safely hold the display. Compare the monitor’s weight with the arm’s stated load range, using the same configuration described by the manufacturer. If the monitor is weighed with its stand, remove the stand before comparing if the arm specification assumes a stand-free display; if the manufacturer gives a different basis, follow that documentation.

The cited LX Pro specification lists a 1.8–10 kg range. This is a specification for that product, not a general capacity for monitor arms. A monitor below the upper limit can still be unsuitable if its weight is below the arm’s minimum, if the load changes with an adapter, or if the installation uses a configuration the arm does not support.
- Find the monitor’s documented weight in the exact model’s specifications.
- Check whether the figure includes or excludes the factory stand.
- Confirm that the resulting weight falls inside the arm’s published minimum and maximum.
- Read the arm documentation for any restrictions involving screen depth, orientation, or installation position.
Account for depth, clearance and installation restrictions
Hole-pattern compatibility addresses only the interface between the monitor and the arm head. The rear housing can be recessed, curved, or surrounded by a stand mount, leaving insufficient clearance for a particular bracket. An arm may also impose model-specific restrictions on display depth, orientation, or how the mounting head is installed.
Before purchasing, compare the arm’s installation instructions with photographs or diagrams of the monitor’s rear panel. Check whether the monitor’s stand must be removed, whether a supplied plate must sit flush, and whether cables or a rear cover occupy the space around the holes. These details are model-dependent; do not infer them from the hole spacing alone.
Also verify the desk or other support used by the arm. The monitor can have a correct VESA pattern and acceptable weight while the chosen arm configuration remains unsuitable for the available mounting surface. Use the arm’s stated installation method and restrictions rather than assuming that any clamp, grommet, or base arrangement is interchangeable.

What to do when the monitor has no matching pattern
Proprietary or undocumented interfaces
Some displays use a proprietary mounting interface, or the manufacturer may omit the pattern from public specifications. If you cannot identify four standard mounting holes or cannot reconcile the measured spacing with the arm’s list, stop before buying hardware. Get the exact model’s mounting instructions or written confirmation from both manufacturers.
Adapters
An adapter can be a valid path when it is documented for the exact monitor and arm, but there is no universal adapter that can be assumed to fit every combination. The adapter adds another interface, so you must verify the resulting hole pattern, supported weight, clearance, and any restrictions in the adapter documentation.
Do not select an adapter solely because its product title contains “VESA.” Confirm that it is intended for your monitor’s rear design and for the arm’s mounting head. If either manufacturer does not establish compatibility, treat the combination as unverified.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down the monitor’s exact model number.
- Find the manufacturer’s stated VESA/FDMI pattern. If it is absent, measure center to center horizontally and vertically.
- Record the result in millimeters as width × height.
- Read the arm’s specification and highlight every supported pattern, rather than relying on a generic compatibility claim.
- Match the monitor pattern to one of those listed patterns exactly.
- Compare the monitor’s stand-free weight, where applicable, with the arm’s minimum and maximum load.
- Review depth, clearance, orientation, and installation restrictions for the specific arm model.
- If the monitor is proprietary or requires an adapter, obtain model-specific confirmation before purchase.
- Recheck the exact product documentation before ordering because specifications and availability can change.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every arm supports 75 × 75 and 100 × 100 mm
Those patterns are common examples, but the cited product evidence covers one arm model only. Always use the pattern list for the arm you are actually buying.

Measuring the hole edges instead of the centers
The standard comparison is center to center. Measuring from the outside of one recess to the outside of another can produce a number that does not correspond to the arm’s mounting plate.
Checking spacing but ignoring load
The plate may line up perfectly while the arm is outside its rated range. Treat pattern and weight as separate pass/fail checks.
Using a generic adapter without model confirmation
An adapter’s label does not establish fit for a recessed rear panel, a particular arm head, or a specific load. Require documentation for the exact combination.

Final decision rule
The right monitor arm is the one whose documented mounting pattern matches the monitor’s measured or manufacturer-listed pattern, whose load range includes the monitor’s applicable weight, and whose installation requirements fit the monitor’s rear housing and your support surface. For a monitor listed as 75 × 75 mm, select an arm that explicitly supports 75 × 75 mm; for 100 × 100 mm, select one that explicitly supports 100 × 100 mm. When the interface is proprietary, undocumented, or dependent on an adapter, obtain model-specific confirmation instead of relying on a universal VESA assumption.
