What Valve’s Steam Frame Hardware Files Include—and What They Don’t

Valve says Steam Frame’s CAD files and electrical-interface information are available for non-commercial use. That is the complete inclusion claim made in the October 9, 2026 Steam Hardware announcement. The announcement does not provide a file-by-file inventory, formats, component list, or exclusions, so no responsible answer can identify particular schematics or manufacturing files without examining the repository itself.

The short answer: two categories are confirmed

Valve’s October 9, 2026 Steam Hardware announcement names two broad parts of the release:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • CAD files for Steam Frame hardware.
  • Electrical-interface information associated with the device.

Valve’s wording is deliberately broad. It does not say whether the CAD package contains every enclosure part, internal bracket, fastener, optical component, board outline, or manufacturing drawing. It also does not identify the electrical interfaces covered, the document formats, revision numbers, or a list of files that are withheld. Those details can only be established by reading the repository and its accompanying terms.

The announcement states: “Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information are now available for non-commercial use.” It separately says: “For commercial use, please follow the instructions at the link and reach out to us.” That is permission guidance, not a promise that commercial use is automatically allowed.

What the announcement establishes—and leaves open

Question Established by Valve’s announcement Not established in the announcement
What kind of material was released? CAD files and electrical-interface information. A file-by-file inventory, drawing types, or documentation categories.
Who may use it? Non-commercial use is stated. The full legal license text and every condition attached to that use.
Can a company use it? Commercial users are told to follow the linked instructions and contact Valve. Automatic commercial permission, pricing, approval criteria, or turnaround time.
Which hardware is covered? The material is described as Steam Frame CAD and electrical-interface information. Specific shells, straps, boards, sensors, lenses, fasteners, tools, or production files.
What formats are supplied? Not stated in the announcement. Native CAD formats, neutral interchange formats, PDFs, images, or source files.
Are complete device designs included? Not stated. Whether the package is sufficient to manufacture a complete headset.

“Not stated” here means exactly that: Valve’s announcement does not answer the question. It does not mean a particular file or component is absent.

What “CAD files” does—and does not—tell you

CAD is a description of computer-aided design data, not a guarantee of manufacturing completeness. A CAD release could contain one or more three-dimensional models, two-dimensional drawings, reference geometry, or assemblies, but Valve’s announcement does not say which of those are present. It likewise does not say whether dimensions are fully toleranced, whether materials and finishes are specified, or whether the data is suitable for injection molding, machining, 3D printing, or another process.

Do not infer that a model is production-ready merely because it can be opened in a CAD application. A maker still needs to check units, coordinate systems, revision identifiers, missing references, wall thickness, clearances, fastening details, and the manufacturing process. Those checks become especially important for a wearable device, where fit, weight, heat, cable routing, and contact with the user all matter.

The release also should not be read as a promise that Valve has published the headset’s complete engineering record. The announcement names CAD files as a category; it does not claim that every internal component or proprietary design has been released.

What electrical-interface information could help with

Valve names electrical-interface information as a separate category, which signals that the release is intended to communicate how external hardware can interact electrically with Steam Frame. The announcement does not enumerate signals, voltage limits, current limits, connector part numbers, communication protocols, pinouts, timing requirements, protection circuits, or software APIs. Do not invent those details from the product’s headline specifications.

Valve Index VR Full Kit
  • Displays - Dual 1440 x 1600 LCDs, full RGB per pixel, ultra-low persistence global backlight illumination (0.330ms at 144Hz)
  • Ergonomic Adjustments - Head size, eye relief (FOV), IPD, speaker positions. Rear cradle adapter included.
  • Inter-pupillary Distance (IPD) - 58mm - 70mm range physical adjustment
  • Optics - Double element, canted lens design
  • NOTE - PC compatible with Valve Index is required

Before connecting a prototype, a maker should locate the actual interface documentation and identify:

  • Connector identity and pin numbering, including the orientation used in the drawing.
  • Permitted voltage and current ranges, startup behavior, and any power budget.
  • Signal direction, electrical levels, pull-ups, termination, and shielding requirements.
  • Data protocol, discovery sequence, firmware expectations, and error behavior, if documented.
  • Mechanical retention, strain relief, and limits on repeated insertion or movement.

None of these values is supplied by the announcement. Treat an unverified pin or voltage as unsafe to use. A wrong connection can damage the headset, the accessory, or both, and a working prototype does not prove that a design is within Valve’s electrical or thermal limits.

Commercial use is a separate process

Valve explicitly distinguishes non-commercial and commercial use. For a personal project, school exercise, research prototype, or other activity that remains non-commercial, the announcement says the files are available for non-commercial use. The complete terms still matter, so read the license or usage notice distributed with the files rather than relying on the headline announcement.

A business, paid product, contract manufacturing run, or accessory sold to customers falls into the commercial question. Valve directs commercial users to follow the instructions at the linked announcement and contact the company. The retrieved announcement does not reproduce those instructions or state that commercial rights are granted on request. Contacting Valve is therefore a required next step, not evidence of approval.

Keep a written record of the permission that applies to your project. Identify the exact repository revision, the files you used, the legal entity making the product, the countries in which it will be sold, and any response or agreement Valve provides. Do not market an accessory as Valve-approved, Steam Frame-certified, or officially compatible unless Valve has given you that authorization in writing.

Steam Frame hardware context

Valve’s official Steam Frame product page provides useful context for interpreting a potential accessory project. It describes Steam Frame as a VR headset and publishes the following specifications. Valve also warns that some specifications may change before availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature Valve-published specification
Processor 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
Memory 16 GB unified LPDDR5X RAM
Storage 256 GB or 1 TB UFS, plus a microSD card slot
Display 2160 × 2160 LCD resolution per eye
Optics Custom pancake lenses
Tracking Inside-out, camera-based tracking
Wireless and connectivity Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4
Software SteamOS 3
Physical expansion User-accessible front expansion port
Head support Modular headstrap

These are product-page specifications, not an inventory of the CAD repository. A modular headstrap does not prove that strap geometry, latches, padding, or adjustment hardware appears in the released files. Likewise, a user-accessible front expansion port does not prove that its connector model, pinout, housing, or mounting drawings are included. Use those features to define questions for the documentation, not as proof that a particular accessory is supported.

Can you make your own Steam Frame accessory?

Valve’s stated non-commercial availability makes independent experimentation a plausible use of the release. You could, for example, investigate a replacement physical part, a research fixture, a custom mounting concept, or a prototype that uses the documented electrical interface. Whether any particular design fits or functions depends on the files and interface details actually supplied.

Separate a physical fit question from an electrical or software question:

  • Physical project: You need reliable geometry, clearances, attachment points, and a safe load path.
  • Electrical project: You need the documented connector and electrical limits, plus protection against miswiring.
  • Software-dependent project: You need to know whether Valve documents a protocol or software behavior. The announcement does not promise an SDK or API.

Do not assume that a part designed from an external photograph will preserve tracking, optics, balance, ventilation, cable clearance, or user safety. A headset accessory can alter the position of cameras or lenses even when it appears to fit mechanically.

A disciplined workflow for using the release

  1. Locate the official repository and notice. Confirm that the material comes from Valve and record the access date and revision information shown there.
  2. Read the usage terms before designing. Determine whether your intended activity is non-commercial and note attribution, redistribution, modification, or warranty conditions.
  3. Inventory the files yourself. Record filenames, extensions, assemblies, drawings, reference links, and revision identifiers. Do not assume a category named in the announcement represents a complete assembly.
  4. Validate geometry. Check units, scale, missing references, coordinate orientation, and whether critical dimensions are defined or merely visible in a model.
  5. Map the interface documentation. Build a pin-and-signal table from the supplied drawings. Include voltage, current, direction, protocol, and connector information only when the document states it.
  6. Design for safe testing. Use current limiting, appropriate fusing, strain relief, insulation, and a reversible connection. Test an accessory separately before attaching it to a headset.
  7. Check the complete user experience. Evaluate fit, balance, comfort, camera visibility, lens clearance, heat, ventilation, cable routing, and access to controls.
  8. Recheck permission before distribution. If money, paid services, sponsorship, or a commercial partner enters the project, stop and follow Valve’s commercial-use instructions.

This workflow prevents a common mistake: treating a downloadable model as both a complete engineering specification and a commercial license. It is neither established by the announcement.

What the release does not promise

  • It does not promise a complete manufacturing package for the headset.
  • It does not identify every included or excluded component.
  • It does not state which CAD or document formats are used.
  • It does not provide electrical values, pinouts, or protocols in the announcement itself.
  • It does not announce a named accessory partner, finished third-party product, certification program, or compatibility guarantee.
  • It does not grant automatic commercial rights.
  • It does not freeze the product specifications; Valve says some may change before availability.

Valve says it looks forward to seeing what customers and partners make. That supports describing third-party projects as an intended possibility. It does not establish that any named maker or accessory already exists.

How to verify the exact contents when you have repository access

The most useful verification is a reproducible inventory rather than a screenshot of a folder. For each file, record its name, format, revision, referenced dependencies, and the hardware area it appears to represent. Open assemblies with external references resolved, then compare the visible parts with the drawings and interface documents. Mark a component as “included” only when a file or document actually identifies it.

For omissions, use precise language. “The announcement does not enumerate lens files” is supportable. “Lens files are not included” requires checking the repository and its terms. The same distinction applies to schematics, firmware, board layouts, connector models, tooling, material specifications, and production drawings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, preserve the original files and terms alongside your project records. Repositories can gain revisions, and a later download may not be identical to the version on which your design was based.

Bottom line for makers and businesses

Valve has confirmed a release of Steam Frame CAD files and electrical-interface information for non-commercial use. That is enough to justify careful personal experimentation and to investigate potential accessory designs. It is not enough to claim that a complete headset design, a particular component, a specific file format, or a usable pinout is present.

For a commercial product, follow Valve’s linked instructions and contact Valve before manufacturing, selling, or advertising anything based on the files. Until the repository is inspected directly, the accurate answer to “what is included?” remains the two categories Valve names—and the accurate answer to “what is missing?” is that the announcement does not enumerate the rest.
