It uses LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) design: canonical USDT is locked on Ethereum, while remote deployments such as Polygon can burn tokens on one supported chain and mint the same amount on another after a message is verified. Polygon’s earlier bridged USDT arrangement was migrated to USDT0 in August 2025, and the migration announcements said existing holders did not need to take action.
For anyone moving funds, the practical rules are just as important as the architecture: verify the complete contract address, select the correct source and destination networks, check that the route is currently supported, and budget for gas even when the protocol fee is zero.

What USDT0 means on Polygon
USDT0 is a cross-chain deployment of Tether’s USDT built around LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token standard. On Polygon, it is the token users receive when they bridge USDT through the USDT0 system, rather than a separate dollar-pegged asset with a different stated unit of account. USDT0’s developer documentation says the token uses six decimals, matching the conventional USDT display format.

Polygon’s previous deployment represented USDT through the Polygon Proof-of-Stake bridge as a child asset. After the 2025 migration, cross-chain settlement moved to the USDT0 and OFT architecture, with the backing supply held in an Ethereum lockbox according to the migration announcement.

That description explains the intended mechanism; it is not an independent audit of current reserves, supply, or smart-contract security. On-chain balances and operational status can change, so a transfer decision should rely on the current official interface and the transaction details shown by your wallet.
How the cross-chain mechanism works
Ethereum to a remote chain
USDT0 documents an Ethereum adapter, called an OAdapterUpgradeable, that receives canonical USDT and locks it. The adapter sends a cross-chain message. Once the destination-side verification requirements are satisfied, the remote USDT0 deployment mints an equivalent amount for the recipient.
The Ethereum backing does not travel in that transaction. It remains locked in the adapter while the remote representation is issued. If the remote token is later returned to Ethereum, the remote deployment burns it and sends an instruction to the adapter to unlock the underlying USDT.
Remote chain to remote chain
For a transfer between two non-Ethereum chains that both have USDT0 OFT deployments, the documented flow is different. The source deployment burns the sender’s tokens, a verified message is delivered to the destination, and the destination deployment mints the same amount for the recipient. The Ethereum adapter and its locked backing are not moved as part of that transaction.
In simplified form:
- The source chain accepts the transfer request and burns the source USDT0 amount.
- Cross-chain messaging and the configured verification process authenticate the request.
- The destination chain mints an equal amount to the destination address.
- The recipient sees the destination-chain balance after the transaction and message processing complete.
Burn-and-mint accounting is the documented design of USDT0 and LayerZero’s OFT implementation. It should not be read as a guarantee that every transfer is instant, immune to outages, or free of bridge and smart-contract risk.

The developer guide identifies these components and states that USDT0 has six decimals. Contract names and implementation details can change through upgrades, so developers should consult the current technical documentation before integrating directly.
What changed in Polygon’s 2025 migration
Polygon announced on August 27, 2025 that Polygon USDT had been upgraded to native USDT0. Polygon’s announcement described the former token as a child asset represented through the Polygon Proof-of-Stake bridge. USDT0’s migration announcement said the previous Polygon USDT contract address was retained while settlement moved to the LayerZero OFT standard and the backing supply was migrated to an Ethereum lockbox.

Both organizations said holders did not need to take action for the migration. In practical terms, users who already held the Polygon token were not instructed to swap manually solely because of the upgrade. That does not remove the need to check the token contract in a wallet: a wallet may display an old label, a custom token entry, or a similarly named asset.
Polygon also reported more than $3 billion in stablecoin liquidity across the Polygon ecosystem in its August 27, 2025 announcement. That is an ecosystem-wide figure, not a USDT0-only balance. USDT0’s Polygon page displays live supply, volume, and route information; those dashboard values are volatile and should be checked at the time of a transaction rather than treated as fixed statistics.

This is the address listed for the token received when bridging USDT to Polygon through USDT0. Because a wrong address can result in an irreversible loss, compare the complete string with the current official USDT0 Polygon page immediately before sending. Do not rely on a shortened address, a search result, a wallet label, or a token symbol alone.
How to bridge USDT to or from Polygon
The official widget describes a straightforward route-selection process. Labels and supported routes can change, so treat the wallet’s final transaction screen as authoritative.
- Connect a wallet. The page lists MetaMask, Rabby, Coinbase Smart Wallet, and wallets connected through WalletConnect. The page does not establish support for any particular hardware wallet.
- Choose the asset. Select USDT and confirm that the token and network shown in the widget are the ones you intend to use.
- Select the source network. This is the chain where your USDT currently resides. Make sure you have enough of that chain’s native gas token for the transaction.
- Select Polygon as the destination, or Polygon as the source for a return transfer. Check that the route is available at that moment; not every network combination is necessarily enabled continuously.
- Enter the amount and destination address. Verify the address character by character and confirm that it can receive tokens on Polygon.
- Review the quote. Check the protocol fee, estimated gas, amount to be received, minimum received if shown, and any route or message status information.
- Approve USDT if requested. On an Ethereum-compatible source chain, the first transaction may authorize the bridge contract to spend USDT. Read the spender address and allowance amount before signing.
- Confirm the transfer in the wallet. Wait for the source transaction to be accepted and for the cross-chain message to finish. A source-chain confirmation alone does not mean the destination balance is already available.
- Verify receipt on Polygon. Check the destination wallet, token contract, amount, and transaction status. If the wallet does not show the token automatically, add the verified contract address manually rather than importing a similarly named token.
Fees: zero protocol fee does not mean zero cost
The Polygon page states that USDT0 Network-to-USDT0 Network transfers have a 0 bps protocol fee. “0 bps” means no percentage-based protocol charge is applied to that route. Users still pay gas on the source and destination chains, and those network costs can vary with congestion and transaction complexity.
The same page lists Legacy Mesh routes involving native USDT on Solana, TON, Tron, and Celo at 0.03%, or 3 basis points, paid in USDT. These are project-stated protocol fees for the listed routes. Route availability, gas prices, and the displayed amount can change, so review the live quote before signing.
| Route type | Stated protocol fee | Other cost to expect |
|---|---|---|
| USDT0 Network to USDT0 Network | 0 bps | Source- and destination-chain gas still applies. |
| Legacy Mesh involving native USDT on Solana, TON, Tron, or Celo | 0.03% (3 bps), paid in USDT | Applicable network gas and any route-specific requirements still apply. |
A fee quote is not a promise of a particular delivery time. Message verification, chain conditions, maintenance, and wallet-provider behavior can affect when the destination balance appears.

How transfers are secured
The Polygon page says transfers to and from Polygon are secured by LayerZero and the USDT0 Attestation System. It describes a 3-of-3 Core Attestation Set made up of USDT0, LayerZero, and Canary. USDT0’s developer guide also describes a 3/3 decentralized verifier network configuration.
In the documented setup, every message requires sign-off from all three members of the attestation set before the destination-side action can proceed. This is a stated configuration claim, not independent verification that the configuration is unchanged or that all failure modes are eliminated.
Cross-chain users still face ordinary operational risks:
- A malicious or mistaken destination address can make funds unrecoverable.
- Smart-contract bugs, upgrade errors, or messaging failures can interrupt a transfer.
- Network congestion can increase gas costs or delay finalization.
- A wallet or token-list error can make a legitimate balance appear missing.
- Bridge and issuer controls remain trust assumptions even when multiple verifiers are used.
Compliance controls and upgradeability
USDT0’s additional-token-behavior documentation says the shared EVM implementation includes an on-chain compliance blocklist. A blocked address can be prevented from sending tokens or invoking specified transfer functions. This is an issuer-controlled transfer restriction and means the token should not be described as permissionless in every circumstance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The documentation also says the token contracts use upgradeable proxies and identifies the canonical Matic proxy for Polygon Proof-of-Stake. Upgradeability allows authorized parties to change implementation logic, which can be useful for maintenance or compliance but means the deployed behavior is not immutable. Before integrating USDT0 into a protocol, review the current proxy, administrator controls, upgrade events, and pause or blocklist behavior.

USDT0 versus Polygon’s former bridged arrangement
The migration changed the representation and settlement path rather than the basic user experience of holding a six-decimal USDT token on Polygon. The following comparison uses the organizations’ stated descriptions; it is not an independent performance or security test.
| Topic | Former Polygon arrangement | USDT0 arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Representation | USDT represented as a child asset through the Polygon Proof-of-Stake bridge. | USDT0 deployment using the LayerZero OFT standard. |
| Backing and settlement | Prior bridge-based representation. | Ethereum backing described as locked in an adapter or lockbox; remote transfers use verified burn-and-mint behavior. |
| Polygon contract address | Migration announcement said the prior address was retained. | Official Polygon page lists 0xc2132D05D31c914a87C6611C10748AEb04B58e8F. |
| Protocol fee | Not stated in the cited migration announcements. | 0 bps for USDT0 Network-to-USDT0 Network routes; 3 bps for listed Legacy Mesh routes. |
| Security description | Former bridge arrangement. | LayerZero and USDT0 Attestation System, with a documented 3-of-3 configuration. |
| User action during migration | Existing holders were not instructed to act. | Existing holders were not instructed to act, according to the migration announcements. |
The available announcements do not establish universal speed, lower total cost, or a safer outcome for every user. Those outcomes depend on route, network conditions, wallet behavior, and the controls in force when a transfer occurs.
Checks to make before every transfer
- Confirm the source and destination chains, including whether the route is USDT0-to-USDT0 or a Legacy Mesh route.
- Match the full Polygon contract address:
0xc2132D05D31c914a87C6611C10748AEb04B58e8F. - Check the live quote for protocol fee, gas, estimated receive amount, and route status.
- Keep enough native gas on both sides when the interface indicates destination gas is required.
- Verify that the recipient address is correct and controlled by you or the intended recipient.
- Do not assume a wallet’s token name proves authenticity; contract address is the decisive identifier.
- For large transfers, send a small test amount first when the route and fees make that practical.
What is established—and what is not
Official Polygon and USDT0 materials establish the stated architecture, the 2025 migration description, the listed Polygon address, route-fee claims, and the documented attestation and token-control features. They do not, by themselves, independently reconcile current Polygon supply with Ethereum lockbox balances, certify every contract upgrade, or guarantee uninterrupted service.
Use USDT0 as a specific cross-chain implementation with explicit operational and governance assumptions. Treat the live route, contract address, fee quote, and transaction status as things to verify at the time you send funds rather than as permanent properties.
