U.S. biomonitoring research found that levels of some measured chemicals differed across income and racial or ethnic groups—but the evidence most directly addressing income comes from NHANES data collected in 2001–2008. It does not show that every low-income person has higher exposure, that the pattern continues today, or that a detected chemical caused harm.
Did the study find higher chemical exposure among some lower-income groups?
Yes, for selected chemicals and particular subgroups. A peer-reviewed analysis screened 228 chemicals measured in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001–2008. The researchers could estimate at least one comparison across income and racial or ethnic groups for 108 chemicals. Of those, 37 had at least one statistically different geometric mean ratio, and 12 had a significantly higher ratio in at least one subgroup than in the study’s reference group: non-Hispanic White participants with higher incomes. The study’s PubMed record summarizes the methods and findings.

The result is evidence of subgroup differences in that study period, not a blanket finding about all low-income people or all chemicals. It also does not establish that the same differences persist today.
Which chemicals showed a higher ratio in at least one subgroup?
The 12 chemicals reported as having a significantly higher ratio in at least one subgroup were:

“At least one subgroup” matters: the study did not find that every lower-income group had higher levels of every chemical on this list. Its comparison included Mexican American, non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White participants, divided into income strata. The researchers defined lower income as a poverty income ratio (PIR) below 2 and higher income as a PIR of 2 or more, and adjusted for multiple comparisons.
What does a biomonitoring result tell you—and what does it not?
Biomonitoring measures a chemical or its metabolites in a person’s blood, serum or urine. A detected level is evidence of exposure; it does not, by itself, identify where the chemical came from or establish that it caused disease. The CDC cautions: “Finding an environmental chemical in a person’s blood or urine does not mean that it causes health effects or disease.” It also notes that effects of low-level exposure remain unknown for most chemicals. CDC’s biomonitoring overview explains this distinction.

- KNOW YOUR STATUS- Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are found in your bloodstream and are unable to break down in your body.
- PFAS SOURCES - PFAS chemicals are present in everyday items such as food, water, soil, and air. They can negatively impact health, potentially leading to illnesses down the road.
- EASY AT-HOME PFAS TEST - Simply collect your blood sample at home. Mail the completed kit to our laboratory with a prepaid shipping label.
- SIMPLE, CLEAR RESULTS - Get secure results in our online portal within 30 days after the lab receives your sample. Each lab report PDF can be downloaded, saved, and printed for personal use or to bring to your next healthcare provider appointment.
- IMPORTANT - We are only able to test samples sent from customers who reside in the USA.
A group-level difference is not a prediction about one person’s future health. The study describes measured exposure patterns; it does not establish a causal mechanism linking income to a particular chemical level or demonstrate resulting health effects.

No. CDC’s National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals uses nationally representative NHANES biomonitoring data. Its series includes data gathered from 1999–2000 through 2017–2018, according to the CDC report overview. These data help characterize selected exposures across the U.S. population; they are not a current map of local conditions.

CDC says the national report does not identify a specific product or environmental source, make toxicity judgments or provide community-specific measurements. NHANES is not designed to estimate exposure for a particular state, city, county or site. Typical chemical-measurement subsamples include about 2,500 participants per survey period, though counts vary; CDC directs readers to the tables for exact sample sizes. CDC’s explanation of the report’s scope and limits covers its geographic constraints.

The 2001–2008 analysis supports the conclusion that measured levels of some chemicals differed across certain income and racial or ethnic subgroups during that period. It does not answer whether those differences remain in newer data: the CDC report’s later survey periods are not, by themselves, a direct update of the study’s income-stratified comparisons.

Historical context also points to unequal exposure in selected settings. EPA’s 1992 environmental equity report described higher-than-average exposure among low-income and racial minority populations for certain air pollutants, hazardous waste facilities, contaminated fish and agricultural pesticides in workplace settings. It also noted limits in data on health effects broken down by race and income. That report is historical context, not a current nationwide measurement. EPA’s report summary describes its scope.
Income can be entangled with other structural and environmental conditions. The evidence cited here does not isolate one cause, and national biomonitoring cannot determine a local source. Establishing whether the earlier disparity pattern continues requires newer research that directly compares biomonitoring measurements by income.
