What Trent’s Festive Sales Can—and Can’t—Tell You About Its Business

Trent’s festive-period and quarterly sales updates are useful signals of reported demand and expansion, but they are not a complete health check. For FY25, the company reported standalone revenue including GST of ₹4,334 crore in the fourth quarter, up 28% year on year, and ₹17,624 crore for the full year, up 39%. Those figures show strong topline growth. They do not, by themselves, show how much came from established stores, newly opened locations, prices, merchandise mix, or sustainable operating profit.

The most reliable reading combines four things: the exact revenue definition, like-for-like growth, changes in the store network, and full-year operating performance. Trent’s own chairman has said the full year is more representative than any single quarter because of seasonality, property-market conditions and inventory management.

What does a festive-sales figure actually measure?

A sales headline is a measurement of revenue during a defined period compared with the same period a year earlier. Before interpreting the percentage, identify four details in Trent’s filing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Period: Is it a quarter, a festive trading window, or the complete financial year?
  • Revenue label: Does the release say revenue from operations, sales of products, merchandise revenue or another measure?
  • GST treatment: Is the amount reported including GST or excluding GST?
  • Scope: Is the number standalone or consolidated?

These distinctions matter because Trent’s releases have used different labels and tax bases. A figure including GST cannot be compared as if it were an ex-GST figure without first normalising the definitions. Likewise, standalone revenue is not automatically interchangeable with consolidated revenue that may include subsidiaries or other entities.

The percentage is a pace indicator, not a diagnosis. A 28% increase means the reported amount was 28% higher than the comparable prior-year period on the stated basis. It does not identify the contribution from stores that were already open, stores added during the year, price changes, a shift toward higher-value products, or changes in the timing of demand.

What Trent reported for FY25

Trent’s FY25 results release reported the following standalone figures, with GST included:

Measure FY25 result Year-on-year change What it indicates
Q4 FY25 revenue ₹4,334 crore, including GST Up 28% Growth in the reported fourth-quarter topline
FY25 revenue ₹17,624 crore, including GST Up 39% Growth across the complete financial year
Fashion like-for-like growth in Q4 FY25 Mid-single digits Company-described range Performance of comparable fashion stores
Fashion like-for-like growth for FY25 Double digits Company-described range Established-store performance for the year

The gap between total revenue growth and comparable-store growth is the key interpretive point. Total revenue rose 39% for the year, while fashion like-for-like growth was described as double digit. In the fourth quarter, total revenue grew 28%, while fashion like-for-like growth was only in the mid-single digits. That tells you the network’s overall expansion was important to the topline. It does not provide a precise percentage contribution from new stores, because the release does not publish a complete bridge covering openings, closures, pricing and merchandise mix.

Is Trent’s sales growth coming from existing stores or new stores?

You need both the like-for-like number and the store roll-out to answer this question responsibly.

Like-for-like growth isolates comparable locations

Like-for-like, or comparable-store, growth compares stores that meet the company’s comparability criteria in both periods. It is intended to show how established locations performed without counting the full first-year effect of newly opened shops. Trent reported fashion like-for-like growth in the mid-single digits for Q4 FY25 and in the double digits for the full year.

That is a different signal from the 28% quarterly and 39% full-year total-revenue increases. Existing stores were growing, but the disclosed ranges were lower than the aggregate topline rates. The difference is consistent with a meaningful expansion effect, while still leaving several possible contributors—new-store ramp-up, store closures, prices and product mix—unquantified.

Openings and closures show the scale of expansion

During FY25, Trent opened 244 Zudio stores and 40 Westside stores. It also consolidated 24 stores of each concept. “Consolidated” indicates that the network was reduced by those stores, so gross openings and net additions are not the same number.

The opening count confirms that the selling footprint changed substantially. It does not tell you the sales generated by each new location, how quickly those stores matured, their occupancy costs, or their profitability. A new store can add revenue while still operating below the productivity of an established location.

Because Trent has not published a numerical decomposition of FY25 growth into existing-store sales, new-store sales, closures, price and mix, any precise statement such as “new stores generated X% of growth” would go beyond the disclosure.

Why one festive quarter cannot establish that the business is doing well

Retail demand is uneven through the year. Promotional calendars, holidays, weather, inventory availability, property openings and the timing of markdowns can shift sales and margins between quarters. Trent’s chairman, Noel N. Tata, made this qualification in the FY25 results release: “Given the seasonality of the business, nature of the real estate market and our approach to inventory management, the full year performance is more representative with respect to revenues, operating profitability and network expansion vis-à-vis any individual quarter.”

Rank #3

That statement does not invalidate the quarterly number. It sets the correct weight for it. A strong quarter can indicate momentum, while a weak quarter can reflect timing or inventory decisions. Neither outcome alone establishes a durable trend.

For a sound comparison, first match the same quarter year on year, then examine the full-year trend. Next, place total revenue beside comparable-store growth and the changes in the store base. Finally, check operating profitability and, when available, cash generation and balance-sheet information. A quarterly topline without these checks is incomplete.

What operating profitability adds to the sales story

Revenue growth becomes more informative when it is accompanied by operating margins. For Q4 FY25, Trent reported a standalone operating EBIT margin of 9.3%, compared with 8.3% a year earlier. The company also said the gross-margin profiles of Westside and Zudio remained consistent.

The margin increase is useful context, but it is still a single-quarter observation. It does not prove that margins will remain at that level as the store network expands, rents change, promotions intensify or product costs move. Nor does a stable gross-margin profile reveal store-level returns, cash payback periods or the profitability of each new outlet.

When reading a future festive update, ask whether the company gives an operating-profit figure, an EBIT or EBITDA margin, and a comparison on the same accounting basis. If the filing reports only sales, treat the update as a demand and footprint signal rather than evidence of improved earnings quality.

Can an aggregate number show which Trent concept is driving growth?

Not unless the filing provides a concept-level breakdown. Trent describes Westside and Zudio as fashion propositions. Star is a supermarket serving food, grocery and daily needs. An aggregate figure can therefore combine different customer missions, categories, margins and store economics.

If a release does not split sales by concept, you cannot reliably attribute the increase to Westside, Zudio or Star. You can describe the company-wide result and separately note the disclosed store openings, but you should not infer that one banner outperformed another from the total.

The same caution applies to merchandise categories. A change in the mix toward products with different prices or gross margins can affect revenue even when customer traffic or unit volumes move differently. Without a volume, price and mix bridge, the headline percentage cannot separate those effects.

What the FY26 update adds—and why its basis must not be mixed with FY25

Trent’s 6 April 2026 update reported FY26 standalone revenue from operations of ₹19,701 crore excluding GST, compared with ₹16,668 crore in FY25 on the same ex-GST basis. It said merchandise revenue grew 19% during FY26.

Those figures are useful for the next full-year comparison, but they should not be directly substituted for the FY25 results-release figures of ₹17,624 crore including GST. The amounts use different tax treatment and labels. A reader should keep each comparison on a like-for-like basis rather than presenting the two headline numbers as one uninterrupted series.

The FY26 update also reported 1,286 stores at 31 March 2026:

In Q4 FY26, Trent reported 109 net Zudio openings and 22 net Westside openings. These figures show that expansion continued. They still do not establish the revenue contribution, maturity profile or profitability of those stores.

  1. Write down the exact period. Record the quarter dates and the prior-year comparison period. Do not compare a festive window with a full quarter unless the company defines them as equivalent.
  2. Copy the accounting basis. Note whether the number is revenue from operations, product sales or merchandise revenue; whether GST is included; and whether the result is standalone or consolidated.
  3. Separate total growth from like-for-like growth. Put the aggregate percentage and comparable-store percentage in adjacent columns. A large gap is a prompt to examine expansion, closures, prices and mix—not permission to assign an exact cause.
  4. Count gross openings, closures and net additions. A store-opening headline can hide closures or consolidation. Record each concept separately when the company provides it.
  5. Check concept disclosure. If Westside, Zudio and Star are not reported separately, keep the interpretation at company level.
  6. Look for profitability measures. Compare operating EBIT or another stated margin with the prior-year period, while noting that one quarter is not a full-year return measure.
  7. Read the full-year trend. Use the quarter as an early signal and the complete fiscal year as the stronger test of revenue, operating profitability and network economics.

What festive sales still cannot tell an investor or reader

  • Exact source of growth: The available disclosures do not quantify the split between existing stores, new stores, closures, prices and mix.
  • Store productivity: Store count does not reveal sales per square foot, sales per store, maturity or payback.
  • Durability: A strong seasonal period may not repeat if demand timing, promotions or inventory conditions change.
  • Cash generation: Revenue and EBIT margin do not by themselves show operating cash flow, working-capital needs or capital spending.
  • Concept-level winners: An aggregate company figure cannot identify which banner or category led growth without a breakout.
  • Share-price direction: Sales growth alone is not a basis for forecasting a stock price or making an investment recommendation.

How current is the latest reported information?

As of 17 October 2026, the latest exchange listing identified a Trent update titled “Update for Q2FY27 and H1FY27,” filed on 5 October 2026. The exchange page listed 29 October 2026 as the board meeting date to consider financial results. The accessible entry did not expose verifiable Q2 FY27 sales figures, so no precise Q2 FY27 number should be inferred from it.

For a clean historical benchmark, use the completed FY25 and FY26 disclosures with their stated GST and scope definitions. Treat any later headline as provisional until the underlying filing provides the period, metric and accounting basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Trent’s 28% Q4 FY25 growth mean existing stores grew 28%?

No. The 28% figure is standalone Q4 FY25 revenue growth including GST. Trent described fashion like-for-like growth as mid-single digits for that quarter, and the disclosure does not provide a complete bridge from comparable stores to total revenue.

How many stores did Trent add in FY25?

Trent opened 244 Zudio and 40 Westside stores and consolidated 24 stores of each concept. Gross openings are not the same as net additions, and the disclosure does not state the sales or profit contribution of each new store.
