Yes, a Galápagos trip can still be worthwhile during El Niño. El Niño is not an automatic cancellation signal, but it can bring warmer seawater, shifting marine productivity, uneven wildlife conditions and weather that is difficult to predict from a seasonal headline. Ecuador’s ERFEN system described the event as being in its initial development phase on October 1, 2026. Check the newest ERFEN and INOCAR bulletin, then confirm sea conditions and contingency plans with your authorized operator immediately before departure.
What El Niño means for the Galápagos
NOAA defines El Niño as a condition in which “surface water in the equatorial Pacific becomes warmer than average and east winds blow weaker than normal.” That ocean-atmosphere change can alter atmospheric circulation, temperature, precipitation, currents and marine ecosystems across the Pacific.

For travelers, the important point is that El Niño is an evolving regional pattern, not a switch that produces identical conditions on every island. Local effects depend on the date, island, anchorage, visitor site, ocean conditions and how strongly the atmosphere and ocean are coupled.

What the latest measurements showed
In its June 5, 2026 bulletin, INOCAR reported weekly sea-surface temperatures of approximately 28.8°C in Niño 3.4 and 26.2°C in Niño 1+2. The bulletin also described warmer-water biological indicators, uneven productivity west of the Galápagos, and an outlook for normal-to-below-normal precipitation with above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures.
INOCAR estimated an approximately 80% probability of favorable El Niño development for May–June–July 2026. That percentage described the likelihood of development during that period; it did not guarantee immediate or uniform impacts at every Galápagos site.
How El Niño may affect snorkeling, diving and wildlife
Warmer water can change marine conditions
El Niño warming can modify the water’s thermal structure, dissolved oxygen, nutrient supply and the distribution of marine organisms. In practical terms, the species you see, their abundance and underwater visibility may differ between islands, sites and dates. A location that is productive on one visit may be less productive on another, while a different site may show stronger activity.
Do not assume that warmer water automatically means better snorkeling. It may feel more comfortable, but changes in nutrients and currents can affect plankton, fish distribution and water clarity. Divers should ask the operator about the expected water temperature, exposure, currents and whether equipment or dive plans are adjusted for current conditions.

Wildlife encounters remain variable
Marine food webs respond to changes in temperature and currents. NOAA notes that ENSO can affect marine life and fisheries; in the Galápagos, that can influence where prey and predators are found. No operator can guarantee a particular penguin, shark, turtle, bird or marine-mammal encounter during El Niño.
Galápagos Conservancy reports that severe historical El Niño events caused approximately 97% coral-reef loss. That is important ecological context, not a prediction that your trip will experience that level of damage. Historical extremes should not be used to infer conditions for every island or for the developing 2026 event.
Land wildlife is not governed by one simple El Niño outcome
Rainfall, vegetation, freshwater availability and marine food supplies can all influence animals, but those responses do not occur on one timetable. A change in ocean productivity may be noticeable to marine species before a visitor sees a clear change on land. Follow the naturalist guide’s site briefing rather than relying on a generic claim that El Niño improves or worsens all wildlife viewing.
Does El Niño mean more rain?
No. More rain is not automatic in the Galápagos. INOCAR emphasized that precipitation effects depend on atmosphere–ocean coupling. During the 2023–24 event, Galápagos Conservancy reported high sea and air temperatures but less rainfall than many people expected.

The wider national picture also needs careful qualification. INOCAR recorded 2,517 rainfall-related events affecting 131,591 people in Ecuador from January through May 2026; that is a national context figure, not a Galápagos tourist forecast. Conditions in mainland Ecuador cannot be treated as a direct prediction for a particular island or cruise route.
Pack for heat, strong sun and the possibility of rain, but do not book on the assumption that El Niño will deliver a wetter landscape or daily showers. Ask your operator about the latest local forecast for each sailing area.
Can cruises and excursions operate during El Niño?
El Niño does not automatically close the Galápagos National Park or cancel every cruise. During the 2023–24 event, a Galápagos provincial-government update reported that visitor sites were open, navigation conditions were normal, basic services in Puerto Ayora were operating and the Itabaca–Puerto Ayora road was passable. The statement also described the event as part of the natural process affecting species.

Ask an operator these questions before paying a balance
- Which official ERFEN or INOCAR bulletin are you using, and when was it issued?
- What happens if swell, wind or currents make a landing unsafe?
- How are missed landings, shortened excursions or substituted visitor sites handled?
- Can the itinerary, transfer or departure date be changed, and what fees apply?
- What medical, communications and evacuation procedures apply to remote marine activities?
Protected-area travel must use an authorized operator. Visitors must remain on marked trails and follow National Park signs and guide instructions.
Is it still worth visiting? Use your priorities to decide
The right answer depends on what you value most. El Niño makes flexibility more important, not necessarily the destination less worthwhile.
| Your priority | What El Niño could change | Best planning response |
|---|---|---|
| Snorkeling or diving every day | Warmer water, altered currents, visibility and marine-animal distribution may vary by site and date. | Choose an operator that can substitute sites and explain current sea conditions; confirm equipment and safety procedures. |
| Specific wildlife encounters | Food-web shifts can change where animals are found. No encounter is guaranteed. | Use a naturalist operator, keep expectations broad and allow time for multiple sites. |
| Predictable land weather | Rainfall may not increase, while heat and humidity can be higher than normal. | Plan for sun, heat and possible rain; check short-range forecasts before each excursion. |
| Fixed connections or a tight schedule | Sea conditions or operational decisions can force substitutions or delays. | Build buffer time around inter-island transfers and flights, and read rebooking terms before booking. |
| Lowest possible disruption risk | Conditions are evolving and differ across routes. | Compare itineraries by marine exposure, land-versus-water activity mix and operator flexibility, not just by price. |
How to plan a Galápagos trip during a developing El Niño
- Check official conditions close to departure. Read the newest ERFEN and INOCAR bulletin, note its publication date and look for updates on sea temperature, precipitation, navigation and visitor sites. Recheck immediately before leaving home.
- Confirm the operator’s authorization. Use an authorized naturalist operator for protected-area activities. Ask for its weather, sea-state and missed-landing procedures in writing.
- Keep transfers and day trips flexible. Leave time between flights, ferries and excursions. A plan that depends on every boat departing exactly on schedule is fragile when conditions change.
- Compare routes using practical exposure. Examine how much time each itinerary spends on open water, how many landings and hikes it includes, whether activities can be substituted and what backup options exist at ports.
- Read cancellation and rebooking clauses. Check what happens when an operator cancels for safety, when a port is closed, when a landing is missed or when you choose not to travel after an advisory.
- Buy suitable insurance. Look for explicit cover for weather disruption, medical treatment and evacuation connected with marine activities. Verify exclusions, limits, documentation requirements and whether pre-existing conditions affect eligibility.
- Follow the guide on every outing. Respect currents, landing instructions, marked trails, wildlife distances and National Park signs. Conditions at a site can change after the morning briefing.
Choosing between itineraries when conditions are uncertain
There is no universally “El Niño-proof” island route. Use the following questions to compare alternatives with your operator.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Travel date | What are the latest official conditions for the exact departure week? | El Niño impacts evolve over time; a seasonal description can be outdated. |
| Island route | Which islands and visitor sites are included, and what substitutions are allowed? | Effects can vary spatially, so one island’s conditions do not describe the entire archipelago. |
| Marine exposure | How long are crossings, and which activities depend on calm water? | Open-water travel and landings are more sensitive to sea state than sheltered shore activities. |
| Land-versus-water mix | How many hikes, viewpoints or town activities remain if snorkeling is curtailed? | A varied schedule gives you alternatives when marine conditions change. |
| Operator flexibility | Who makes safety decisions, and how are missed activities documented or replaced? | Clear procedures reduce uncertainty when the planned sequence cannot operate. |
| Current bulletin | Which ERFEN or INOCAR release supports the operator’s advice? | It lets you distinguish current evidence from a generic El Niño sales pitch. |
What to pack
Use a normal Galápagos packing list, adjusted for heat and the possibility of rain rather than for a guaranteed El Niño pattern.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Light, breathable clothing and a hat for strong sun.
- High-protection sunscreen and sunglasses.
- A lightweight waterproof layer or poncho for sudden rain.
- Quick-drying clothing and a small dry bag for boat transfers.
- Sturdy, closed footwear for marked trails and a separate pair suitable for wet landings.
- Any prescribed medicines, plus a personal first-aid supply.
- Refillable water capacity and a way to protect electronics from spray.
Your guide may add site-specific requirements. Do not let a packing list substitute for a briefing on currents, landing surfaces, heat exposure or wildlife distance.
What to monitor after you arrive
Conditions can change between the booking date and the first excursion. Monitor the operator’s daily briefing and official Ecuadorian updates rather than social-media anecdotes from a different island or week.
- Sea state, swell and wind for the next crossing.
- Heat, sun exposure and any rain or thunderstorm advisories.
- Changes to visitor-site access, trails, ports, roads or ferry operations.
- Wildlife and snorkeling observations reported by your licensed naturalist, while recognizing that one site does not represent the whole archipelago.
If a captain or guide cancels a landing for safety, treat that as normal risk management, not evidence that the entire destination is closed. Ask what alternative activity is available and how the operator records the change.

The practical verdict
Visit during El Niño if you can accept variability and choose a trip built around current information. The developing 2026 event may mean warmer water and shifting marine conditions, but it does not establish that snorkeling, wildlife viewing or cruises will be ruined. Rainfall is especially uncertain: more rain is possible in some circumstances, yet it is not a guaranteed consequence.
The most reliable safeguards are an authorized operator, a flexible itinerary, realistic wildlife expectations, appropriate insurance and a final check of ERFEN and INOCAR conditions immediately before departure. Make the decision from the latest local bulletin and your tolerance for changing plans—not from the word “El Niño” alone.
