What Tons per Day of Steam Means for a Geothermal Project’s Electrical Output

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Tons per day is a mass-flow rate, not a power rating. For metric tonnes, divide by 24 to get tonnes per hour, or multiply by 1,000 and divide by 86,400 to get kilograms per second. To estimate electrical output, divide the steam flow by the plant’s measured steam consumption in kilograms per kilowatt-hour, then account for auxiliary loads and availability.

A practical screening equation is estimated MW ≈ metric tonnes per day ÷ (24 × steam consumption in kg/kWh). Using the 9.47 kg/kWh steam-consumption figure reported for a 330 MW project evaluated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), 1,000 metric tonnes per day corresponds to about 4.40 MW of gross-equivalent output. That is an illustrative, project-specific conversion—not a universal geothermal rule.

What “tons per day” measures

In geothermal reporting, “tons per day” normally describes how much steam is produced or delivered over a 24-hour period. It is a mass-flow unit. It does not directly state how much electricity a turbine produces.

Metric-ton conversion

For metric tonnes:

  • 1 metric tonne per day = 1,000 kilograms per day.
  • 1 metric tonne per day = 41.67 kilograms per hour, using a 24-hour day.
  • 1 metric tonne per day = 0.01157 kilograms per second.

If a report uses U.S. short tons, establish that basis before calculating. A short ton and a metric tonne are different masses, so substituting one for the other introduces an error before plant performance is considered.

Define the measurement boundary

The same label can refer to materially different points in a geothermal system:

  • Well or field production: steam measured as it leaves production wells or separators.
  • Steam delivered to the turbine: flow after gathering, separation, scrubbing, throttling, or other treatment.
  • Total field production: an aggregate from several wells or plants, sometimes reported alongside reinjection or non-condensable gases.

These boundaries are not interchangeable. A field figure can be higher than turbine-inlet flow because of gathering losses, separation, venting, or steam supplied to other units. A turbine figure may exclude hot geothermal liquid that is important in a binary plant.

Why steam flow does not uniquely determine megawatts

Electricity depends on the energy available in the fluid and how efficiently the plant converts it. The U.S. Department of Energy describes dry-steam, flash-steam, and binary-cycle systems and notes that the appropriate conversion type depends on the subsurface fluid’s state and temperature (DOE, source c1).

Plant type changes the meaning of the flow

Plant type What enters the turbine or power cycle Why the same mass flow can produce different output
Dry steam Steam is routed directly to the turbine. Output depends on inlet pressure and temperature, steam quality, turbine efficiency, condenser conditions, and auxiliary demand.
Flash steam Hot geothermal water is depressurized; the resulting steam drives the turbine. Separator pressure, well-fluid enthalpy, flash fraction, and pressure losses determine how much of the produced fluid becomes turbine steam.
Binary cycle Geothermal fluid heats a separate working fluid that drives the turbine. The reported geothermal-fluid flow is not the same as turbine-steam flow. Heat-exchanger performance, working-fluid conditions, and cooling determine output.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported 2,558 MW of operating U.S. geothermal capacity in 2020: 1,826 MW steam-powered and 731 MW binary-cycle. It noted that dry-steam and flash plants generally have higher output than binary plants, but they require rarer, higher-temperature resources (EIA, 2020, source c4). Those figures describe fleet capacity categories, not a conversion factor from tons per day.

  • Whether the value is gross generator output or net power exported after pumps, fans, cooling, and other auxiliary loads.
  • Whether the flow is an instantaneous, average, maximum, or guaranteed value.

An environmental-impact table for an 80 MW geothermal design demonstrates why context matters: it pairs 164.0 kg/s of steam at 164.4°C with 78.4 MW of net output (European Investment Bank project document, 2009, source c5). The flow alone cannot reproduce that 78.4 MW figure because the pressure, quality, turbine arrangement, and gross-to-net treatment are also part of the design.

A screening calculation from metric tonnes per day

If a project supplies a tested steam-consumption value, you can make a first-pass estimate. Steam consumption is the mass of steam required to generate one kilowatt-hour under the project’s stated conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gross-equivalent MW = metric tonnes per day × 1,000 ÷ (24 × steam consumption in kg/kWh × 1,000)

The thousands cancel, giving the shorter form:

Gross-equivalent MW ≈ metric tonnes per day ÷ (24 × steam consumption in kg/kWh)

This is a screening result. It assumes the reported flow is the steam quantity to which the steam-consumption test applies and that the test’s pressure, temperature, quality, turbine, and separator conditions match the project being estimated.

Illustration using the JICA project factor

A JICA project evaluation reports 3,125 tonnes per hour of steam for a 330 MW installation and a steam-consumption figure of 9.47 kg/kWh (source c2). The relationship is internally consistent: 3,125,000 kg/h divided by 9.47 kg/kWh equals approximately 330,000 kW.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applying that project-specific factor to daily flow gives these gross-equivalent values:

Steam flow Flow in kg/h Calculation with 9.47 kg/kWh Gross-equivalent output
1 metric tonne/day 41.67 41.67 ÷ 9.47 About 4.40 kW (0.00440 MW)
100 metric tonnes/day 4,166.7 4,166.7 ÷ 9.47 About 0.440 MW
1,000 metric tonnes/day 41,666.7 41,666.7 ÷ 9.47 About 4.40 MW
2,400 metric tonnes/day 100,000 100,000 ÷ 9.47 About 10.56 MW

The table does not establish that every geothermal plant needs 9.47 kg of steam per kilowatt-hour. It shows what the arithmetic looks like when a particular project’s measured factor is deliberately reused under comparable conditions.

Worked example: 2,400 metric tonnes per day

Suppose a project reports 2,400 metric tonnes per day of steam and separately documents a tested steam consumption of 9.47 kg/kWh.

  1. Convert daily mass to hourly mass. Multiply by 1,000 and divide by 24: 2,400 × 1,000 ÷ 24 = 100,000 kg/h.
  2. Apply steam consumption. Divide the hourly flow by 9.47 kg/kWh: 100,000 ÷ 9.47 = 10,559 kW, or approximately 10.56 MW gross-equivalent.
  3. Convert gross to net. Subtract the electricity used by pumps, fans, cooling equipment, gas removal, controls, and other auxiliaries, or apply the project’s documented net-to-gross factor.
  4. Estimate delivered annual energy separately. Multiply net MW by the hours in a year and the plant’s capacity factor. Do not label that annual MWh or GWh result as instantaneous capacity.

Do not use the 10.56 MW result if the 9.47 kg/kWh test came from a different steam pressure, temperature, quality, turbine, separator, or measurement boundary. In that situation, the calculation is a comparison illustration rather than a project estimate.

How to turn a reported flow into a defensible project estimate

1. Identify exactly what was weighed or metered

Ask whether “tons per day” is wellhead steam, separator outlet, turbine-inlet steam, or an entire field’s total. Record the number of wells, operating units, and any steam sent to other users. Also record whether the figure is an average, design requirement, maximum, or short-term test.

2. Confirm the mass unit and time basis

Write “metric tonnes per day” or “short tons per day” in the calculation heading. Convert to kilograms per hour or kilograms per second before combining the flow with a heat rate or steam-consumption value. If the source gives a daily average, do not present it as a guaranteed hourly flow.

3. Obtain the plant’s own steam consumption or heat rate

A tested kg/kWh value is preferable to a generic rule. If the project reports heat rate, use its stated units and whether it is based on gross or net generation. A steam-consumption number measured at turbine inlet should not be applied to a field-production number without accounting for the intervening losses and separation.

4. Calculate gross electrical output

Use the screening equation only after the boundaries and units match. Keep enough significant figures to show the method, then round the result to a precision the underlying measurements support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Apply parasitic and availability adjustments

Net output is what remains after auxiliary loads. Availability and capacity factor are different adjustments: availability concerns whether equipment is ready to run, while capacity factor describes average production over time relative to maximum capacity. Planned outages, resource constraints, curtailment, and seasonal cooling conditions can all reduce delivered energy.

6. Test sensitivity

Recalculate with the project’s plausible range for steam consumption, flow, pressure, and net-to-gross ratio. A single flow-to-MW number can conceal more uncertainty than it communicates, especially during early field development.

How to compare two geothermal projects

A fair comparison needs more than each project’s tons-per-day headline. Use the same boundary and document these axes:

Comparison axis Question to answer
Steam consumption or heat rate How many kilograms per kWh are required, and is the value gross or net?
Gross versus net MW Are auxiliary loads included or excluded?
Thermodynamic conditions What are pressure, temperature, dryness, and non-condensable-gas content at the measurement point?
Plant type Is it dry steam, flash, or binary, and is the reported flow actually turbine steam?
Boundary Does the flow describe wells, separators, the gathering system, or the turbine inlet?
Time basis Is it instantaneous, average, design, or guaranteed flow?
Long-term performance What capacity factor, outage schedule, degradation, and resource-decline assumptions are used?
Mass standard Are both projects using metric tonnes, or has one used short tons?

A historical Mexican geothermal operations report cited an average 6,416 tonnes per hour of steam production supporting 743 MW installed across 26 plants in 1996 (Luis Carlos Gutiérrez-Negrín, 1997, source c3). That is an aggregate fleet observation from a particular year and operating mix. It is not a universal conversion factor and should not replace plant-specific performance data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capacity, energy, and steam decline are different quantities

Instantaneous capacity versus annual energy

Megawatts describe a rate of electrical output at a given operating point. Megawatt-hours and gigawatt-hours describe energy accumulated over time. A plant can have a 10 MW net rating and produce less than 10 MW for part of the year because of maintenance, resource limits, grid constraints, or cooling conditions. The correct annual-energy calculation is net MW × 8,760 hours × capacity factor, with any project-specific calendar or availability convention stated.

Resource decline

Steam supply can change as a field is produced. The JICA evaluation records historical decline of 7% or more per year in the cited field (source c2). That is a project-specific observation, not a universal geothermal decline rate. A feasibility model should state whether new wells, make-up wells, reinjection strategy, pressure management, and turbine derating are included.

Nameplate and delivered generation

The DOE/NREL plant dataset distinguishes nameplate capacity from net generation (source c6). A nameplate value is the equipment’s rated capability; it is not proof of the energy delivered to the grid. Always label whether a number is installed, gross, net, available, or actually generated.

Common mistakes and how to prevent them

  • Dividing tons per day by a number in kg/kWh without converting the day. Divide the daily mass by 24 first, or use the compact equation with the 24-hour term.
  • Treating field steam as turbine steam. State the measurement boundary and account for separation and gathering losses.
  • Applying a dry-steam factor to a binary project. Binary plants transfer heat to a secondary working fluid; geothermal-fluid flow is not automatically turbine-steam flow.
  • Reporting gross MW as exportable power. Remove auxiliary consumption and identify the net boundary.
  • Mixing metric tonnes and short tons. Confirm the mass standard in every source before combining values.
  • Turning a daily average into a guaranteed output. Preserve the source’s average, peak, design, or guaranteed qualification.
  • Conflating MW with MWh. Apply capacity factor and operating hours only when calculating annual energy.
  • Assuming one project’s decline rate applies everywhere. Use field-specific reservoir and production studies.

What a useful geothermal steam-output statement should include

A technically clear statement might read: “The project expects 2,400 metric tonnes per day of average separator-outlet steam. Using the plant’s tested 9.47 kg/kWh steam consumption, this equals approximately 10.56 MW gross-equivalent before auxiliary loads. Net export, capacity factor, measurement uncertainty, and future field decline are reported separately.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That format tells the reader the unit, boundary, time basis, conversion factor, and what has not yet been deducted. Without those qualifiers, “2,400 tons per day” is only a flow figure and cannot, by itself, establish the plant’s electrical output.
