Wear adaptable layers and bring proper rain protection, sturdy hiking boots, and essentials you can reach quickly. Summer weather at a trailhead does not predict conditions near Mount Fuji’s 3,776 m summit: the official climbing site says it can be close to 0°C there before sunrise, even in summer, and wind can make it feel colder. Check the current guidance for your route and date before setting out.
Why Mount Fuji needs layers—even in summer
Conditions can change markedly between the fifth station and the summit. The official climbing site gives a general rule of thumb of about 0.6°C lower temperature for every 100 m of elevation gain. It also estimates that perceived temperature falls by about 1°C for each 1 m/s increase in wind speed. These are broad guides, not a forecast for a particular climb.

Climbing effort can make you warm, while a rest, wind, rain, or a pre-dawn summit wait can leave you cold. Wear clothing you can adjust as your activity and conditions change. On descent, shed layers when needed to avoid overheating.

Base layer: choose quick-drying fabric
Wear quick-drying underwear or a moisture-wicking base layer. The official site’s guidance favors quick-drying material; avoid relying on clothing that stays wet, since damp fabric can leave you uncomfortable as temperatures drop. If you have a chance to change, replace wet clothing with dry layers.

Insulation: pack warmth for stops and summit hours
Bring a warm mid layer such as fleece, plus a warmer insulating option such as a down jacket for cold conditions or long stops. The official checklist also names gloves and a neck warmer as cold-weather clothing. Keep these items easy to reach rather than buried under gear.
Outer layer: bring a rain jacket and pants
Pack separate waterproof mountaineering rain jacket and pants. They protect against rain and wind, and the official climbing site describes both as essential. A simple vinyl raincoat can tear in strong winds, according to the site’s FAQ, and is not a reliable substitute for proper two-piece mountain rainwear.

Headwear: prepare for sun and wind
There is limited tree shade on the route, so bring a hat that protects your face and the back of your head. The official safety guidance recommends a wide-brimmed hat secured with a chin strap because wind can blow it away. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also on the equipment checklist.
Footwear and essentials to pack
Choose hiking boots with a high cut or stiff sole, as specified by the official equipment checklist. Check that the boots fit and that their soles are intact before departure. The official FAQ warns that older soles can deteriorate and notes that there are no repair facilities on the mountain.

Use a hands-free backpack; the official checklist suggests about 30 L. Pack the following essentials:
- Headlamp and a spare battery, especially if your hike includes darkness or a pre-dawn start.
- Drinking water and high-calorie snacks. The checklist calls for 1–2 L of water; the safety page separately gives 1.2 L per day as a guideline. Your needs depend on route, weather, effort, and water access.
- Garbage bags, a map, and first-aid supplies.
- Trekking poles if you choose to use them.
- Rainwear and warm clothing near the top of your pack for quick access.
Check the route rules, forecast, and alerts
Requirements are seasonal and may differ by trail. For 2026, the official Yoshida Trail notice says equipment is checked at the fifth station and identifies cold-weather clothing, two-piece rainwear, and appropriate climbing footwear; it also says people without required equipment may not use the descending trail. Treat this as Yoshida Trail guidance for 2026, not a universal rule for every route or season. Check the official route information for your trail and travel date.

Before leaving, check the Official Website for Mt. Fuji Climbing for route conditions and rules, and review its weather and safety information for forecasts, warnings, and volcanic alert information. Weather can change; a forecast for the fifth station may not describe summit conditions.
If you forgot rain gear or need to change
The official FAQ says vinyl raincoats may be available for purchase at mountain huts, but warns they are not very useful in strong winds and recommends bringing separate mountaineering rainwear in advance. Do not plan to rely on buying a substitute on the mountain.

Hut facilities vary, and water is scarce, according to the official FAQ. Do not assume you will be able to wash your face or change clothes wherever you stop. Bring dry replacement clothing if you may need it, and check the facilities at any hut you plan to use.
Renting gear instead of buying
If you do not want to buy equipment for one climb, the official climbing diary notes that mountain-equipment rental shops operate at the foot of the mountain. Availability, inventory, and rental arrangements are not specified here, so confirm directly with a shop before relying on a rental for essential gear.
