Wear familiar, comfortable walking shoes and clothing suited to the forecast and route. If the walk starts in cool weather and continues as it warms up, dress in removable layers. Pink is a popular theme at American Cancer Society (ACS) Making Strides events, but the available event guidance does not make it a requirement. Check your own event page for local rules and route details.
Choose shoes you already know are comfortable
Start with footwear that feels good for walking and that you have worn before. ACS says Making Strides walks typically cover 2.5 to 5 miles, depending on the event and location, so comfort over several miles matters more than choosing a particular brand or style. An ACS checklist for its Point Pleasant Beach event also advises participants to wear comfortable shoes.

Check the local forecast close to event day. A checklist for the ACS Point Pleasant Beach event recommends dressing in layers because the morning may be cooler and the day warmer. Choose a layer you can take off and carry or tie around your waist if conditions change.

For an outdoor walk, the 2026 Miami Making Strides event listing suggests bringing a hat and sunscreen, along with clothing appropriate for the weather and the walk. Treat that as guidance for that listing—not a universal rule for every ACS event or charity walk.
Do you have to wear pink?
No requirement to wear pink is stated in the ACS materials referenced here. Pink shirts, hats, and festive outfits appear in event imagery, and ACS links to official merchandise, but those are ways to join the event’s visible theme, not proof that branded clothing is required. Wear pink if you want to; otherwise, choose comfortable clothes for the conditions.

Check your event’s local rules before you go
Charity walks can have different routes, dates, and event-specific instructions. Read the page for your particular walk to confirm what to wear, where to go, and what items are prohibited. For example, one ACS local FAQ says shirts, shorts or pants, and shoes must be worn at all times and lists prohibited items. That rule applies to that event; it should not be treated as a nationwide policy.
