Watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica (the 2011 TV series), then Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Rebellion-. If you have already watched the series, you do not need to go back and watch Beginnings and Eternal before moving forward. If you have not, choose one presentation of the TV story, then watch Rebellion.

What to watch before the new movie
Start with the original story
The TV series aired in 2011 and is the original presentation of the main story. Choose it if you want the full episodic format and the story as first released. It provides the foundation for Rebellion, which in turn leads directly into Walpurgisnacht Rising.
For a first-time viewer who is not trying to catch up quickly, the series is the straightforward starting point: it presents the original story as a television series rather than compressing it into two films. The important point for the next movie is not that you must watch the series in addition to every film, but that you should know the original story before Rebellion.
Use the recap films if you need a shorter route
Beginnings and Eternal are a two-film theatrical retelling of the TV story, released in 2012. They are an alternative way to catch up, not additional episodes in the timeline. Whichever format you choose, continue with Rebellion afterward.

The trade-off is format and presentation: the series gives you the full episodic version as it was first released; the films let you cover the same original story through a two-part theatrical retelling. The available information does not establish that one route is a substitute for Rebellion, because neither is its sequel. Both routes lead to the same next step.
Then watch Rebellion
Released in 2013, Rebellion is the continuation you need immediately before Walpurgisnacht Rising. The new movie follows from the consequential ending of Rebellion. If you have already watched the TV series, you can go straight to Rebellion; there is no need to watch both recap films as well.

If it has been a while since you saw the earlier story, a recap can be useful, but the viewing order does not require you to repeat material you already know. Choose either the two recap films or a rewatch of the TV series if you want to revisit the original story; then make Rebellion the final film before Walpurgisnacht Rising. The new movie is not described as a fresh adaptation of the series or as a continuation of Beginnings and Eternal in place of Rebellion.
Do you need to watch Magia Record?
No—not for this direct sequel path. The franchise’s official portal distinguishes Magia Record as a side story, whereas it presents Walpurgisnacht Rising as a sequel to Rebellion. You can watch it separately if you want to explore another part of the franchise, but it is not a required bridge between Rebellion and the new film. Official Japanese film site.
So, if your only goal is to be ready for Walpurgisnacht Rising, there is no need to add Magia Record to the checklist. It is neither one of the recap films nor the continuation identified by the official introduction. You can explore it separately, but do not confuse “part of the wider franchise” with “required for this sequel.”
Which route should you choose?
- You want the original, episodic presentation: watch the 2011 TV series, then Rebellion.
- You prefer a film-length catch-up: watch Beginnings, then Eternal, then Rebellion.
- You have already seen the TV series: proceed to Rebellion; the recap films retell what you know.
- You are deciding whether to add Magia Record: leave it out of the essential sequence unless you want the optional side story.
A simple preparation check is to ask what you have already seen. If the answer is “the series,” go to Rebellion. If it is “neither the series nor its recap films,” choose the series or both recap movies. If the answer is “the recap films,” go to Rebellion. In every case, the final step before the new film is the same.
There are a few common order mistakes to avoid. Do not watch Beginnings and Eternal after the series as though they were the next two sequel chapters: they retell the series story. Do not stop after the first recap film if you chose that route: it is a two-part retelling. And do not substitute Magia Record for Rebellion; the former is a side story, while the latter is the direct prior continuation.

The official Japanese site lists August 28, 2026, as the theatrical release date for Walpurgisnacht Rising and carried theater-related notices in October. Check the official site for current local screening information: madoka-magica.com/wr.
This is the Japanese theatrical date, not a worldwide release date. For a local screening, use the official Japanese film site’s current theater information rather than assuming that the film is still playing everywhere or that the same dates apply in another territory.
United States
Aniplex of America and Fathom announced an exclusive U.S. theatrical window for Walpurgisnacht Rising from January 16 to 19, 2027, with Japanese-subtitled and English-dubbed presentations. The announcement says tickets go on sale December 11, 2026. Those dates concern the U.S. theatrical release; they do not establish the film’s availability in other territories. The announced U.S. window is four calendar days, January 16 through 19. Both subtitled and English-dubbed presentations are listed, so viewers can check for their preferred format when local showtimes and tickets are available. The announced December 11 ticket-on-sale date is not itself a guarantee that every theater or format will have the same schedule; confirm the listing with the relevant seller or theater.
The same announcement gives November 8, 2026, for the Madoka Magica movie trilogy’s Crunchyroll debut and January 2, 2027, for its Netflix debut in the U.S. It also announces Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs for November 15. These are announced platform dates, not evidence of continuing catalog availability; check the service and your territory before relying on them. The streaming dates concern the trilogy—Beginnings, Eternal, and Rebellion—not a stated streaming date for Walpurgisnacht Rising.
That distinction matters if you are planning a catch-up: the announced U.S. streaming dates cover the three earlier movies, and the first two are the recap pair. They can therefore support the film route before the announced U.S. theatrical dates for the new movie. The announcement does not say that the new film will stream on those dates, nor does it verify the current availability of the trilogy beyond the announced debuts. Aniplex of America announced a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray package containing Beginnings, Eternal, and Rebellion, with an October 15, 2026 retail date and a standard retail price of $149.98, as listed in the 2026 Fathom announcement. This is an announced price, not a statement of current retailer pricing, stock, or availability. The package covers the recap films and Rebellion, not Walpurgisnacht Rising. The set is relevant if you want physical access to the two-film retelling and the prior sequel in one named package. It does not replace the viewing-order decision: the contents are still the recap pair plus Rebellion, and you can choose the TV series instead of the recap films if you prefer the episodic route. Treat $149.98 as the announced standard retail price, not a live quote. No current official U.S. retail listing was published for Amazon availability, retailer stock, discounts, or any affiliate arrangement, so check a retailer directly before buying.
Keeping the story spoiler-light
The official synopsis frames the new film around Homura, the changed world she has created, the return of magical girls, and a conflict involving Walpurgisnacht. Because those details touch on developments after Rebellion, it is best to go into the movie having seen Rebellion and avoiding longer plot summaries if you want to preserve its surprises. The watch order above supplies the needed context without requiring a plot recap.
The official Japanese promotional copy calls the film, in translation, a “legitimate sequel” to Rebellion and “a new beginning.” That wording supports the direct-sequel answer, but it does not mean that the earlier film can be skipped. The official synopsis is also a reason to keep this guide focused on order rather than reproducing later plot details: if you are avoiding spoilers, knowing the required titles is enough preparation.
