What to Watch Before Marvel Zombies: The Essential Episode (and Optional MCU Context)

Shortest answer: Watch What If…? Season 1, Episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!” if you want the closest screen introduction, then start Marvel Zombies. It is the episode that established the dystopian world expanded by the animated series. However, it is a primer rather than required homework: Marvel Television executive producer Brad Winderbaum says viewers can begin the series without prior lore and still understand it.

Marvel Zombies is a four-part Marvel Animation event that premiered on Disney+ on September 24, 2025. It is rated TV-MA, so check that rating before choosing it for a family viewing session. Disney+ is the official streaming destination identified by Disney, although the catalogue you see can depend on your country and the date you check.

Choose your viewing route

There is no Disney-prescribed MCU marathon for Marvel Zombies. Your best order depends on whether you want the shortest possible preparation or extra familiarity with the characters.

Route Watch before Marvel Zombies What you gain Commitment
No preparation Nothing A self-contained introduction to this story Start the four-part event immediately
Closest connection What If…? Season 1, Episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!” The alternate-world premise that the series expands One episode
Optional character context The episode above, plus any MCU stories you already want to revisit for Kamala Khan familiarity More background for a pivotal survivor More than one episode, with no fixed movie list required

For most viewers, the middle route is the sweet spot: one connected episode, followed by the series. If you are curious and do not want any preparation, press play on Marvel Zombies itself.

Why “What If… Zombies?!” is the best primer

Disney Plus Press identifies “What If… Zombies?!” as an alternate-event story in the first season of What If…? That makes it the nearest screen connection to Marvel Zombies. The episode introduces the idea of a zombie catastrophe in an alternate Marvel reality, while the later series expands that dystopian setting into a four-part event.

The connection has an important limit: Marvel Zombies is not presented as a direct continuation of the episode’s cliffhanger. Watching the episode can establish the kind of world and storytelling rules you are entering, but it does not function as a missing “previous chapter” that must be resolved before the series makes sense.

Winderbaum described the accessibility goal directly in Disney’s behind-the-scenes feature: “You don’t need to know the lore to enjoy it; you’ll get what you need from just watching this one story, which makes it inviting. You can come to it completely blind… and still get it.” That guidance is why the episode should be called the best primer, not a requirement.

What to notice if you watch the episode first

  • It demonstrates how What If…? uses an alternate event to reframe familiar Marvel ideas.
  • It gives you the tone and basic premise of a zombie-focused Marvel reality before the longer animated story begins.
  • It shows the kind of continuity link involved: a shared concept and setting inspiration, not a promise that every cliffhanger carries over literally.

You do not need to memorize every character or plot beat. The useful preparation is understanding that the series grows out of an alternate-universe zombie scenario rather than continuing the main live-action MCU timeline in a straightforward way.

How to follow the minimal-context order

  1. Find Season 1, Episode 5 of What If…?. Select the episode titled “What If… Zombies?!” in your streaming service’s episode list. The official episode information is available through Disney Plus Press.
  2. Watch the episode without adding a movie marathon. The purpose is orientation, not completion of an MCU syllabus. Do not treat unrelated films as prerequisites.
  3. Start Marvel Zombies on Disney+. Disney’s official title page is the Marvel Zombies listing. The series is a four-part event, so the episode is a compact lead-in rather than a long preparation track.
  4. Expect expansion rather than a scene-by-scene handoff. The series draws on the earlier dystopian world but is not advertised as the direct resolution of that episode’s cliffhanger.

Can you start Marvel Zombies with no preparation?

Yes. This is the officially supported fast path. Disney’s producer guidance says the story supplies what a new viewer needs, even without knowledge of the wider Marvel lore. Starting cold also avoids a common mistake: assuming that every Marvel Animation project requires a complete chronological MCU rewatch.

The no-preparation route works especially well when you care more about the new series’ own plot than about recognizing references. You may encounter established characters and concepts, but the available official guidance does not identify a movie or a long list of episodes as mandatory background.

If you later want more context, you can watch “What If… Zombies?!” after the series as a companion piece. The order is flexible because the episode is an inspiration and world connection, not a required explanation for an unresolved finale.

Is any MCU movie essential?

No MCU movie is established by the official guidance as essential viewing before Marvel Zombies. In particular, there is no supported requirement to rewatch the Avengers films or to complete a release-order marathon. Adding dozens of films would increase the time commitment without matching the stated viewing need.

That does not mean movie knowledge is useless. Viewers who already recognize Marvel characters may notice more relationships and references. The distinction is between recognition and comprehension: recognition can add enjoyment, while Disney’s guidance says comprehension does not depend on it.

Where Kamala Khan fits into the optional preparation

Disney’s behind-the-scenes article identifies Kamala Khan as a pivotal survivor in Marvel Zombies. That makes her the most relevant piece of optional character context mentioned in the official material. If you already know Kamala from other MCU appearances, her role may feel more immediately familiar; if you do not, the series is still designed to introduce what you need within its own story.

Director, writer and executive producer Bryan Andrews discussed Kamala in relation to the chronology of What If…? and Avengers: Infinity War: “When we were developing this, Kamala was relatively new to the MCU. Based on the timeline of What If…? and Avengers: Infinity War, she was in a perfect spot.” This is creator context about where the character fit during development, not an instruction to watch Avengers: Infinity War first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sensible character-context decision

  • You know Kamala already: Watch the series after the single episode, with no additional preparation.
  • You want the closest connection only: Watch “What If… Zombies?!” and then begin the event.
  • You are unfamiliar with Kamala: Start anyway. Her importance is part of the series’ story, and the producer’s standalone guidance applies.

Do not turn the optional Kamala context into a demand for a full MCU catch-up. The official sources support familiarity as an extra, not as a gate you must pass.

What kind of series are you preparing for?

Marvel Zombies is a four-part Marvel Animation event, not a feature film or a regular live-action season. Disney’s video listing describes it as a four-part event, and Disney’s company article gives its Disney+ premiere date as September 24, 2025. Knowing the format helps set expectations: the recommended primer is one episode because the main title itself is a compact event rather than an open-ended multi-season commitment.

The series is also rated TV-MA. That rating should be part of your decision before you start, especially if you are choosing something for younger viewers or a mixed-age household. The rating is a content-suitability signal; it does not change the preparation order.

Where to watch and how to handle availability

Disney identifies Disney+ as the streaming destination for Marvel Zombies. Use the official Disney+ title page to check the listing, but treat availability as region- and date-dependent. A title page or catalogue result in one country does not prove that the same catalogue appears everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disney’s official video listing also records the September 24 arrival date: Marvel Animation’s Marvel Zombies Arrives September 24 on Disney+. If the title is not visible in your account, verify your region, profile restrictions and the current Disney+ catalogue rather than assuming that another MCU film will provide an equivalent substitute.

Common viewing-order mistakes

Mistake: calling the episode mandatory

“What If… Zombies?!” is the closest connection, but Disney’s producer explicitly frames Marvel Zombies as understandable without prior lore. Labeling the episode required overstates the preparation the series needs.

Mistake: expecting a direct cliffhanger continuation

The animated series expands the dystopian world introduced by the episode, yet it is not described as directly continuing that cliffhanger. Watch for shared premise and thematic continuity rather than assuming a literal handoff from the final shot.

Mistake: adding an entire MCU marathon

No official source reviewed for this viewing question prescribes a complete movie order. A marathon may be enjoyable for a dedicated fan, but it is not an evidence-based prerequisite for understanding this four-part event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: ignoring the rating

Because the series is TV-MA, check the rating before inviting children or viewers who avoid mature animation. “Animated” does not mean the content is automatically suitable for every age group.

Are the Marvel Zombies comics required?

No. The comics are an optional adjacent path, separate from the screen-viewing order. Marvel maintains a Marvel Zombies comics reading list documenting the comic line and its universe origin. Reading those books can deepen your interest in the concept, but the producer’s statement that viewers can come to the series without prior lore means comics are enrichment rather than preparation.

If your goal is simply to watch the animated event, use the one-episode route or start the series directly. Choose the comics when you want a different medium and a broader look at the concept, not because the show requires them.

Recommended order for most viewers

  1. Watch What If…? Season 1, Episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!” for the closest world connection.
  2. Begin the four-part, TV-MA Marvel Zombies event on Disney+.
  3. Add other MCU viewing only if you personally want character recognition or a broader Marvel rewatch.

That order answers the practical question without turning optional context into homework. If even one preliminary episode feels like too much, skip directly to Marvel Zombies; the official guidance supports that choice.
