What to Watch After Stargate: Sci-Fi Shows with Exploration and Team Adventures

Start with Farscape if you want the closest match to Stargate’s displaced-human premise and constantly changing alien encounters. Choose Star Trek: Discovery for a starship crew pursuing a galaxy-scale mystery, or The Expanse for a more grounded solar-system investigation built around politics and conspiracy. Each preserves part of Stargate’s appeal while changing the balance between episodic missions, serialized storytelling, science-fiction ideas and team dynamics.

The right follow-up depends on which part of Stargate you miss most: specialized teams travelling through a portal, a long journey away from home, discovery of unfamiliar worlds, or a mystery that expands beyond one mission. This guide maps those preferences to specific shows without pretending that one title is universally “the best.”

What makes a show feel like Stargate?

Amazon’s official Stargate franchise guide describes a format built around specialized human teams exploring worlds through alien portals. Across the franchise, that setup combines military action with ancient mythology and modern science. Stargate SG-1 sends an Earth team to different planets; Stargate Atlantis follows a spin-off expedition connected to the Ancients and the lost city; and Stargate Universe places a multinational group on a continuing attempt to get home while surviving in an unknown region of space.

Those premises suggest four useful tests for a watch-next recommendation:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Mission shape: Do you want self-contained expeditions, a continuing journey, or a mystery that steadily widens?
  • Team focus: Is the appeal a recognizable group with contrasting skills, rather than one lone hero?
  • Exploration: Are new worlds and alien encounters the central engine, or mainly the backdrop for politics and investigation?
  • Story commitment: Would you rather have a lighter adventure rhythm or a more heavily serialized narrative?

No other series in this guide reproduces all four elements at once. The recommendations work because each preserves a different core of the Stargate formula.

The quick decision: which show should you start?

Start with Best match for What changes from Stargate Scale and structure
Farscape A stranded human travelling with an unruly alien crew and looking for a way home The outsider is isolated in an alien society rather than part of an Earth-led expedition Multi-season journey; 88 one-hour episodes plus a two-part miniseries
Star Trek: Discovery A starship crew exploring new worlds while pursuing a galaxy-wide objective The story is organized around a large-scale Federation mission rather than portal visits from Earth Five seasons; season five is the final season
The Expanse A serious space mystery that grows into a solar-system conspiracy Investigation, power politics and realistic distances matter more than planet-of-the-week expeditions Complete six-season series

If you want one first choice without further qualification, pick Farscape. Its official premise most directly combines a displaced human, alien companions, danger in unfamiliar territory and an ongoing effort to return home.

Farscape: the closest match for a displaced outsider and alien crew

Why Stargate viewers may connect with it

The Jim Henson Company describes astronaut John Crichton being sent across a thousand galaxies into an alien conflict. He becomes hunted and begins a quest to find his way home. That starting point turns the familiar Stargate question—how does a human cope beyond Earth?—into the entire protagonist’s situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead of an Earth unit stepping through a portal with a defined objective, Crichton is separated from home and forced to travel with beings whose cultures, motives and priorities are unfamiliar. The result is a team-adventure premise based on necessity: survival and escape require cooperation even when the crew does not agree.

How the adventure is organized

The official Jim Henson Company listing dates the series to 1999–2004 and counts 88 one-hour episodes, followed by a two-part miniseries with 90-minute episodes. Peacock’s episode descriptions show Moya’s crew facing alien threats, stopping on planets and searching for a route home. Those details make Farscape the strongest choice here for viewers who want recurring travel and encounters rather than a single fixed location.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The episode count also matters when planning a watch. This is not a short limited series: the story has room for relationships, conflicts and discoveries to accumulate over multiple seasons, with the miniseries providing a separate concluding format.

Choose it when these priorities matter

  • You want the human lead to be the one who is out of place.
  • You enjoy a crew whose members come from different alien backgrounds.
  • You want the search for home to remain a continuing reason for the group to move.
  • You prefer exploration to happen through repeated encounters with planets, species and threats.

What to check before committing

Farscape is a long, serialized commitment compared with a show built around mostly separate missions. Its central setup is also more personal than institutional: the story begins with one astronaut’s displacement, not a standing military program. If your favorite Stargate element is the procedural structure of an Earth team receiving and completing assignments, Star Trek: Discovery may feel like a more natural next step.

Star Trek: Discovery: for a starship-led search across the galaxy

Why it fits the exploration brief

StarTrek.com describes the fifth and final season as a crew-led search across the galaxy for an ancient power while dangerous competitors pursue the same objective. The same official series material presents earlier voyages as missions to discover new worlds and lifeforms. That combination makes Discovery the clearest recommendation when you want exploration to be conducted by a functioning starship crew on a very large map.

The connection to Stargate is the emphasis on a team travelling into the unknown rather than a solitary explorer. The difference is the unit of travel: a starship and its crew replace a portal network and rotating planetary missions. The objective can span the galaxy, so the consequences are not limited to one world or one expedition.

Its scale and endpoint

StarTrek.com identifies five seasons and calls season five the final season. That gives new viewers a defined endpoint rather than an indefinitely continuing series. The fifth-season premise is especially useful if you want a concentrated search narrative with rival pursuers, while the earlier seasons establish the crew’s other voyages and discoveries.

Because the series is organized around a starship and a continuing command structure, it suits viewers who want team decisions, travel and mission objectives to remain central. It is a better fit than Farscape if the institutional crew dynamic matters more to you than the “stranded traveler” setup.

Choose it when these priorities matter

  • You want a crew-led expedition rather than one human trying to navigate an alien society alone.
  • You prefer galaxy-scale stakes and a search for an ancient power.
  • You want new worlds and lifeforms to be part of a starship’s ongoing mission.
  • You want a five-season series with a clearly identified final season.

Availability is territory-specific

The official StarTrek.com page lists seasons one through four on different services depending on territory, including Paramount+ in several listed countries and other services elsewhere. That information does not establish current availability for every season or every country. Check the services available in your market immediately before starting; streaming catalogs and licensing arrangements change.

The Expanse: for a political solar-system mystery

What makes it a different kind of Stargate follow-up

Universal Pictures At Home describes The Expanse as a noir thriller set 200 years in the future. A missing-person case leads a detective across the solar system toward a major conspiracy. The distributor categorizes the series as science fiction, drama, action, mystery and adventure.

This is the choice for viewers who want the scope of space travel but are willing to trade Stargate’s direct expedition format for investigation and political pressure. The mystery begins with one disappearance and expands as the characters follow evidence across the solar system. It is therefore less of a planet-of-the-week match than Stargate SG-1, but it still offers a team-oriented space story in which separate lines of inquiry converge.

Why the setting changes the experience

A solar-system setting keeps the geography comparatively constrained: journeys connect established human locations rather than requiring a portal to a wholly separate world each week. The official synopsis emphasizes the detective’s case and the conspiracy it uncovers, so the central question is not simply “what is on the next planet?” but “who benefits, who is hiding information, and how far does the threat reach?”

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That makes The Expanse a useful recommendation when your favorite Stargate episodes were the ones that uncovered a larger secret, forced competing groups to cooperate or connected local events to a much wider danger.

Choose it when these priorities matter

  • You want a mystery or conspiracy to drive the plot.
  • You prefer a future shaped by competing powers and political decisions.
  • You want a complete six-season story rather than an open-ended catalog.
  • You are comfortable with a less direct match for Stargate’s alien-planet expedition format.

Buying and viewing options

Universal lists The Expanse: The Complete Series covering seasons one through six for digital purchase and on Blu-ray and DVD. The listing gives a 2023 release year and notes that digital purchase is a limited license subject to the retailer’s terms. A physical edition can be useful if you want dependable access to the complete run, but confirm the exact disc region, edition and current retailer stock before buying.

Other directions: Star Trek: Enterprise and Deep Space Nine

Paramount+’s science-fiction category material describes Star Trek: Enterprise as taking place at the dawn of human deep-space exploration. It describes Deep Space Nine as a space station near a gateway to far reaches. Those premises point toward two different Stargate-adjacent interests: the first human steps into deep space, or a recurring base where travelers, cultures and conflicts meet.

The available category descriptions provide less detail than the official pages for the three primary recommendations, so treat these as secondary directions rather than direct rankings. Enterprise is the more obvious choice if you want exploration to be the premise; Deep Space Nine is more relevant if you want a station-based ensemble and a stable hub connecting distant regions.

Match your Stargate preference to a show

If you miss the “team through the gate” feeling

Choose Farscape when the emotional core is a small group forced to depend on one another in alien territory. Choose Star Trek: Discovery when you want that group to operate as a formal starship crew with a galaxy-spanning objective.

If you miss the search for home

Farscape is the direct match because John Crichton’s quest to return home is part of the official premise. Stargate Universe fans may find that particular motivation more important than the military structure of SG-1 or Atlantis.

If you miss ancient mysteries and discoveries

Star Trek: Discovery offers a search for an ancient power in its final season. The Expanse offers a different kind of discovery: a missing-person investigation that reveals a conspiracy across the solar system. Neither premise is identical to Stargate’s mythology, but each turns information uncovered during travel into the story’s larger engine.

If you want the most grounded alternative

Pick The Expanse. Its official description centers on a detective, a future solar system and a conspiracy, making it the least direct match for portal-based planetary adventures but the clearest option for viewers who want spacefaring drama tied to investigation and power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to plan your watch

  1. Identify your missing ingredient. Decide whether it is alien encounters, a tight team, a continuing journey, a starship mission or a mystery.
  2. Pick the matching starting point. Use Farscape for the stranded outsider, Star Trek: Discovery for galaxy-scale starship exploration, and The Expanse for a solar-system conspiracy.
  3. Check the commitment. Farscape has 88 one-hour episodes plus a two-part miniseries; Star Trek: Discovery has five seasons; The Expanse has six seasons.
  4. Verify local access. Streaming services differ by country and can change. Confirm the specific season, not just the series title, in your region.
  5. Use physical media for certainty. Universal’s complete-series Blu-ray and DVD listing for The Expanse provides an alternative to changing streaming catalogs, subject to edition and region checks.

Bottom line for Stargate fans

Farscape is the strongest first stop for a human outsider travelling with an alien crew and trying to get home. Star Trek: Discovery is the better fit for a formal starship team pursuing a galaxy-scale objective and discovering new worlds. The Expanse keeps the spacefaring scope but shifts the emphasis to a 200-years-in-the-future mystery, political forces and a solar-system conspiracy. Start with the premise that matches the part of Stargate you want to keep, then verify current regional availability before pressing play.
