Check the exact product name and lot number against its recall notice, then follow the notice’s directions. If the product was an over-the-counter lubricant for dry eyes, lubricating drops, gels, or ointments are options to discuss with a pharmacist or eye-care professional—not automatic substitutes. If you used the drops and have pain, discharge, vision changes, or signs of infection, seek medical advice promptly.
First, check whether your exact product was recalled
Find the product name and lot number on the bottle or packaging and compare them with the applicable FDA notice or recall announcement. FDA advises consumers to check the lot number against the recall notice. A product’s brand name alone may not tell you whether it is affected, and the title of this article cannot identify your product or lot.

If the product and lot match, follow that notice’s instructions for stopping use, returning or disposing of the product, and contacting the company. Recall details can change, so consult the current notice rather than relying on an older alert.

For an over-the-counter dry-eye lubricant
FDA describes OTC lubricating drops, gels, and ointments as options for dry-eye relief. These are categories to discuss with a pharmacist or eye-care professional; that guidance does not establish that any particular brand or product is safe or suitable for you. Ask for help selecting a replacement that fits your symptoms and use directions.
#1 Best Overall
- LASTING RELIEF: Original strength lubricating formula soothes mild symptoms of eye dryness
- PRESERVATIVE-FREE: Made with zero preservatives to relieve mild symptoms of dry eyes including burning, irritation, and discomfort
- FAST ACTING: Instantly moisturizes and lubricates
- RELIABLE PROTECTION: Active ingredients provide lasting lubrication for dry eyes
- GENTLE: Safe to use as often as needed. Great for dry, sensitive eyes
Do not assume that changing brands, buying online, choosing a “preservative-free” label, or choosing single-use packaging makes a product a safe substitute. Eye drops must be sterile: medicines placed in the eye bypass some of the body’s natural defenses, so contamination can cause serious harm. Read FDA’s eye-drop safety guidance and check for applicable alerts.
For prescription drops or drops used to treat another condition
Contact the prescribing clinician or pharmacist before stopping or switching. The right alternative depends on the medicine and the condition being treated; for some recalled medicines, stopping treatment can carry its own risk. Get advice specific to your prescription rather than substituting an OTC lubricant.

What to do if you already used the drops
FDA’s guidance is to stop using drops if you develop discharge, pain, vision changes, or discomfort, and contact a health-care professional. Its warning about certain recalled products says to contact a provider or seek medical care immediately if you have symptoms of infection after using them. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen before getting advice.
When using any eye drops, wash your hands first and do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, hands, clothing, or other surfaces. For unexpected effects, talk to a doctor and report the issue to FDA.

Why matching the recall matters
Eye-drop recalls differ by product and lot, so a historic recall is not proof that your product is affected—or that another product is an appropriate replacement. For example, FDA’s safety page lists a December 21, 2024 recall of one lot, 10101, of Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF, Single Vials On-the-Go, 25 count. That notice concerns the identified lot; it should not be generalized to all Systane products.
A separate FDA notice dated February 2, 2023, about Global Pharma Healthcare’s recalled EzriCare and Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears reported 55 adverse-event reports, including eye infections, permanent vision loss, and one death with bloodstream infection. That figure refers to that notice and those products; it is not a current total for all eye-drop recalls. See the FDA notice on the 2023 recall.
