Turn on Airplane Mode, then turn Wi‑Fi back on. That disables your phone’s cellular connection while preserving the Wi‑Fi radio needed for the aircraft network, provided the airline and crew allow Wi‑Fi. Join the onboard network and finish its sign-in or payment page. This is the correct connection setup—not a guaranteed speed boost. If the portal or airline content still fails, use the airline-specific VPN or Private Relay steps below.

The setting that matters most: Airplane Mode first, Wi‑Fi second

Airplane Mode is the one setting that directly answers the usual “what should I turn off?” question. On an iPhone, Apple says Airplane Mode initially disables cellular, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth. If the airline permits onboard connectivity, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth can then be switched on separately. Airlines commonly describe the same sequence: put the phone in Airplane Mode, enable Wi‑Fi, select the aircraft’s network and complete the login flow.

Do not leave Wi‑Fi disabled. The aircraft service reaches your phone through Wi‑Fi, so turning that radio off guarantees that you cannot connect. The goal is to stop ordinary cellular transmission while keeping the Wi‑Fi connection that the aircraft provides.

Why this does not automatically make the connection faster

Airplane Mode changes your phone’s radios; it does not add capacity to the aircraft’s internet service. Air India explains that available bandwidth depends on the satellite link, how many aircraft are using that satellite, how many passengers are online and how intensively those passengers are using data. Japan Airlines likewise cautions that satellite-based inflight Wi‑Fi can feel slower than a typical ground connection.

That distinction helps diagnose a slow connection. If you can open the airline’s sign-in page and authenticate, your phone configuration is probably adequate. A crowded cabin, a busy satellite beam or a service with limited capacity can still produce slow page loads after a successful login. Turning off additional phone features cannot create more shared aircraft bandwidth.

Exact connection sequence on a flight

  1. Follow the crew and operating airline. Some services are enabled only during part of the flight, and the rules for Wi‑Fi, VPNs and calls differ by airline and aircraft.
  2. Enable Airplane Mode. Use your phone’s quick settings or Settings app and confirm that the cellular connection is off. The label and location vary by device.
  3. Re-enable Wi‑Fi. In Airplane Mode, open Wi‑Fi settings and switch Wi‑Fi on. This does not cancel Airplane Mode; it turns on the radio the onboard network needs.
  4. Select the airline’s network. Choose the network name shown in the airline’s instructions or onboard portal. Wait for the phone to show that it is connected, even if it initially says there is no internet.
  5. Complete the captive portal. Open the notification or browser page that appears, accept the terms, sign in or purchase a pass, and wait for confirmation. A Wi‑Fi icon alone does not prove that internet access has been authorized.
  6. Test a simple page. Open a lightweight webpage or the airline’s own service page before starting a large download or video stream. This confirms that authentication has completed.

Apple’s travel guidance describes the same principle: Airplane Mode can remain enabled while Wi‑Fi is turned back on if the airline allows it. The exact network name, portal and payment requirements are controlled by the operating airline.

What each phone setting does in this situation

Setting Recommended state Reason and limits
Airplane Mode On Disables cellular transmission and establishes the standard onboard configuration. It does not improve satellite capacity.
Wi‑Fi On after Airplane Mode Required to join the aircraft network. Turning it off prevents a connection.
Cellular service Off through Airplane Mode Keeps the phone from attempting ordinary mobile-network service while you use aircraft Wi‑Fi.
Bluetooth Usually unchanged unless crew instructions say otherwise Bluetooth is separate from Wi‑Fi. Apple allows it to be re-enabled in Airplane Mode, but it is not the control that determines aircraft internet access.
VPN Off until airline login is complete when required by the airline On Delta’s service, a VPN can prevent access to the Delta Sync login. Authenticate or buy a pass first, then enable a supported VPN.
Private Relay Temporarily off only for the specified Delta Sync problem Delta says its IP masking can block some exclusive offers or content. This is a targeted access fix, not a general speed setting.

When a VPN prevents the login page

Delta states that its onboard Wi‑Fi supports major VPN applications, but the order matters. If you connect to a VPN before signing in, the service may not show the Delta Sync login or pass-purchase page. Delta’s instruction is to log in or purchase a pass before turning the VPN on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correct order on Delta

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode and turn Wi‑Fi back on.
  2. Join the aircraft’s Wi‑Fi network.
  3. Open Delta Sync and complete sign-in or purchase.
  4. Confirm that the service is working.
  5. Only then connect to your supported VPN.

If the portal disappears after the VPN starts, disconnect the VPN temporarily, reload the portal, finish authentication, and reconnect the VPN afterward. This sequence addresses access to the login system; it does not promise faster browsing once the tunnel is active.

When Private Relay blocks Delta Sync content

Delta identifies a separate issue for Apple devices using Private Relay. Because Private Relay masks the device’s IP address, some Delta Sync exclusive offers or content may not load. If you can connect to the network but specific Delta Sync material is missing, temporarily turn Private Relay off using the controls in your iCloud or Apple account settings, then retry the Delta Sync page.

Use this as a narrow troubleshooting step. Private Relay is not established as a way to increase the aircraft’s internet bandwidth, and disabling it is unnecessary when the only symptom is generally slow browsing. Turn it back on after the airline content has loaded if you want your usual privacy setting restored.

If the phone says “connected” but the internet does not work

The sign-in page never appears

  • Verify that Airplane Mode is on and Wi‑Fi is on again.
  • Open a browser manually; captive portals sometimes do not launch automatically.
  • Temporarily disconnect a VPN, especially before Delta authentication.
  • Forget the aircraft network and rejoin it if the portal remains stuck. Follow the airline’s instructions before doing this, because some services require a particular network name.

The portal opens, but authentication fails

  • Check that you have completed every terms, account or payment step.
  • On Delta, keep Private Relay off only if the problem is missing Delta Sync offers or content.
  • Do not assume that a Wi‑Fi icon means the pass has been activated; wait for the portal’s confirmation.

You are disconnected after initially working

Air India’s connectivity FAQ treats disconnection as a service troubleshooting issue, so first recheck the airline’s instructions and reconnect to the onboard network. If the phone reconnects but pages remain slow, aircraft-side demand is a more likely explanation than an undiscovered phone switch. The satellite link, the number of connected aircraft, passenger count and onboard data use all affect the available service.

Only some services work

Airline networks can restrict traffic or provide selected content through their own portal. A VPN, Private Relay or another privacy tunnel can also change how the service identifies your connection. Complete the airline login without those tunnels, test the service, and then re-enable the privacy tool if the airline supports it.

Airline rules change the answer

There is no single worldwide rule for when Wi‑Fi starts, which services are available or whether calls are allowed. Check the operating airline rather than relying on a previous flight’s procedure.

Airline guidance in the available sources Operational detail
Delta Air Lines Airplane Mode with Wi‑Fi enabled is the recommended setup. Sign in or purchase a pass before enabling a VPN. Private Relay can affect some Delta Sync offers or content. Voice and video calls are not permitted.
Air India Keep Airplane Mode on and Wi‑Fi enabled. Its FAQ attributes performance to satellite capacity, connected aircraft, passenger numbers and onboard data demand.
Singapore Airlines Wi‑Fi is available during a defined operating window: above 10,000 feet, approximately 15 minutes after takeoff until 15 minutes before arrival. Voice calls, including internet-protocol calls such as WhatsApp or Messenger calls, are not supported.
Japan Airlines Its international Wi‑Fi FAQ notes that satellite-based service may feel slower than ground Wi‑Fi.

The Singapore Airlines timing is airline-specific operating guidance, not a general aviation rule. Likewise, one carrier’s calling or VPN policy should not be applied automatically to another carrier.

What not to turn off in the hope of gaining speed

  • Do not turn off Wi‑Fi. It is the radio that carries the onboard connection.
  • Do not treat Private Relay as a speed switch. The documented Delta case concerns access to offers or content.
  • Do not leave a VPN on before a Delta login. Authenticate first; connect the VPN afterward if permitted.
  • Do not promise that disabling Bluetooth, background activity or other unrelated settings will add bandwidth. The airline sources do not establish that effect.
  • Do not use cellular data as a fallback while Airplane Mode is required. Follow crew instructions and the aircraft’s rules.

A practical decision checklist

Use this short sequence when you need to decide whether a setting or the aircraft service is responsible:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Can the phone see the airline network? If not, confirm Airplane Mode is on and Wi‑Fi has been re-enabled.
  2. Can the portal load? If not, open a browser manually and disconnect any VPN that was enabled too early.
  3. Can you complete sign-in or payment? If not, retry the airline’s portal and use Private Relay troubleshooting only for the Delta Sync content problem described above.
  4. Does a simple page load after authentication? If yes, the phone setup is functioning.
  5. Is browsing still slow after successful login? Expect limits from satellite connectivity and passenger demand; more phone settings are unlikely to create additional capacity.
  6. Are calls or Wi‑Fi unavailable at this point in the flight? Check the operating airline’s timing and service rules rather than changing radios repeatedly.

Bottom line for a reliable onboard setup

Use Airplane Mode with Wi‑Fi switched back on, then authenticate through the airline portal. Keep VPNs out of the login sequence when the airline requires that order, and disable Private Relay only for the documented Delta Sync access issue. Once you are connected, judge performance realistically: aircraft satellite capacity and the number of passengers sharing it—not an extra phone switch—usually determine how fast the service feels.
