Serve besan ki sabji with plain rice or roti: both are recommended in a recipe specifically for the dish. If you mean the related Rajasthani gatte ki sabji, steamed rice, jeera rice, paratha, jowar roti and bajra roti are also documented options. A simple yogurt side is another possibility for a besan-based meal, though it is not established as a standard accompaniment for every besan curry.

First, distinguish besan ki sabji from gatte ki sabji

Besan means gram flour. The name besan ki sabji can refer to a gram-flour curry, while gatte ki sabji is a specific related dish made with seasoned besan dough formed into dumplings, boiled, sliced and added to curry. The cited Rajasthani gatte recipe uses a spiced, tangy yogurt-based gravy and notes that household and regional variations exist. The longer list of bread and rice choices below comes from that gatte recipe, so it should not be treated as a list prescribed for every besan sabji.

A recipe for Besan ki Sabji names plain rice or roti. For gatte ki sabji, Dassana Amit’s recipe, updated April 19, 2026, names a wider set of breads and rice dishes.

Rice choices

Plain rice with besan ki sabji

Plain rice is the most direct rice pairing for the dish named in the title: the Besan ki Sabji recipe explicitly recommends serving it with plain rice. Its simple flavor and spoonable texture make it a straightforward base for the curry.

Steamed or jeera rice with gatte ki sabji

The gatte ki sabji recipe lists both steamed rice and jeera rice. Choose steamed rice for a plain accompaniment, or jeera rice when you want a more seasoned alternative. These are options, not a claim that one is more authentic or preferred.

Bread choices

Roti

Roti is named alongside plain rice in the recipe specifically titled Besan ki Sabji. It is the direct bread choice when you want to scoop up the curry rather than eat it over rice.

Paratha, jowar roti and bajra roti

For gatte ki sabji, the cited recipe also lists paratha, jowar roti and bajra roti. These broaden the choices for the dumpling-based curry; the source does not establish that they are standard pairings for every dish called besan ki sabji.

Should you add a side dish?

A simple yogurt side is a reasonable option for a besan-based meal, but the evidence is specific: Uttarakhand Open University’s Regional Cuisines of India-I (BHM-502AT) says besan masala roti may be served with “a spicy side or a simple yogurt.” Its example of a Rajasthani sabzi meal includes kadhi, phulkas and steamed rice. These examples support flexibility, not a fixed side-dish formula for besan ki sabji.

The cited sources do not establish a standard pairing list for raita, pickle or salad with besan ki sabji. Add one if it suits your meal, but it is not necessary to present it as a required accompaniment.

Choose by how you want to eat the curry

  • For the simplest match: serve besan ki sabji with plain rice or roti.
  • For gatte ki sabji with a plain base: choose steamed rice or a roti.
  • For a more varied gatte meal: choose jeera rice, paratha, jowar roti or bajra roti.
  • For an additional side: simple yogurt is supported as an option in regional course material for besan masala roti, rather than as a universal rule for besan curry.

The sources establish these as serving choices but do not rank them by popularity, nutrition or authenticity.
