Remove four categories before handing over an old phone: your personal data and account access, the SIM or eSIM service, device locks and connected services, and any extras the receiving program does not want. Back up and transfer your information first, verify that the copy works, then sign out and run the phone’s built-in erase command. Only after that should you remove the SIM or erase its eSIM profile and prepare the phone for its new owner.
1. Personal data and accounts
The most important item to remove is not a single file. It is your entire personal profile: photos, messages, contacts, email, saved passwords, payment details, app sessions and cloud-account access. The safe sequence is backup, transfer, verify, sign out, then erase.

Back up before touching the old phone
Create a current backup using the phone’s built-in cloud or computer backup process. If you are moving to another phone, start the manufacturer’s transfer process as well. Keep the old phone powered on and connected to Wi-Fi until the transfer finishes.

Apple warns that manually deleting synced items while signed in to iCloud can remove those items from iCloud and from other connected devices. Erasing the phone through its built-in reset flow is the safer way to remove the local copy without intentionally deleting your cloud library.

Verify the transfer instead of assuming it worked
Open the important categories on the replacement phone or in your cloud account:
- Recent photos and videos, including albums you rely on.
- Contacts and calendars.
- Messages or the messaging backup your platform supports.
- Notes, documents and voice recordings.
- Authenticator codes, passkeys and password-manager data.
- Banking, travel and work apps that require a separate sign-in or approval.
Check a recent item in each category, not just the total number of files. A transfer can finish while a particular album, conversation or app remains incomplete. Keep the old phone available until you can sign in to the replacement and recover any account that asks for two-factor approval from the old device.
Sign out of accounts before erasing
On an iPhone, Apple’s current sell-or-give-away guidance uses version-dependent sign-out screens. In general, open Settings, select your name at the top, scroll to the account controls and choose Sign Out, following the prompts for your Apple Account password and any data the phone asks you to keep or remove. Menu wording can differ on older iOS releases, so use the instructions for the iOS version installed on that phone rather than treating one label as universal.
Sign out of other accounts that may keep the device registered: email, work or school management, password managers, messaging services and any account with a “trusted devices” list. If the phone belongs to an employer or school, follow its return procedure instead of removing management yourself; an administrator may need to release it from the organization.

For Android, the backup-and-sign-out-and-erase sequence applies, but there is no single settings path for every manufacturer or software version. Use the phone maker’s current instructions for removing the Google account and any manufacturer account, then perform that device’s factory-reset process. Do not apply iPhone menu names to Android.
Use the built-in erase function
After the backup and account sign-out, run the operating system’s own erase command. On a recent iPhone, the path is generally Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. The phone will ask for the passcode and account password as needed, then restart at the setup screen when the process is complete. Older iOS versions may use different wording.
For Android, open the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact factory-reset location. A reset started from the normal Settings app is preferable to manually deleting files, because it removes the user profile, encryption keys and local app data in the way the platform expects. If you cannot open Settings, obtain the maker’s recovery-reset instructions and confirm that the account has been removed first; a reset alone may leave an ownership lock in place.

2. The SIM and cellular service
A phone can be wiped and still expose your cellular identity if you leave the wrong SIM or eSIM profile attached. Handle a removable SIM and an eSIM differently.

When selling an iPhone, choose the option to erase the device and the eSIM profile when the erase screen offers that choice. | An eSIM is stored electronically; there is no card to pull out, and deleting the profile without coordinating service can interrupt your line. |
Apple’s wording is explicit: “If you sell a device that uses eSIM, choose the option to erase the device and the eSIM profile when asked whether to erase the device and the eSIM profile.” The carrier still controls the service transfer or suspension, so complete that coordination before the phone leaves your hands.
If you are giving the phone to someone in your household, do not assume they should inherit your number. Move the line to their account or arrange a new activation with the carrier. A physical SIM ejector tool is useful only for phones with a tray; eSIM-only models do not need one.
3. Device locks and connected services
Erasing files is not enough if the phone remains associated with your account. The recipient needs to be able to activate it without seeing your credentials, and you need to stop the old phone from approving sign-ins or receiving payments.

Confirm ownership locks are gone
On an iPhone, Find My and Activation Lock are linked to your Apple Account. Sign out and use the built-in erase flow. When the erase completes, the phone should show the initial setup screen rather than your name, passcode prompt or a request for your Apple Account during activation. If a buyer sees an Activation Lock screen, you have not released the device; sign back in only long enough to remove it from your account, then erase again.
On Android, account-protection behavior varies by manufacturer and software version. Remove the Google account and any manufacturer account before the factory reset, then check the welcome screen. If the phone asks for the previous owner’s credentials, stop the handoff and follow the maker’s account-removal procedure.
Unpair an Apple Watch
If an Apple Watch is paired to the iPhone, unpair it before erasing the phone. Unpairing creates a current watch backup and removes the activation relationship in the proper order. The watch can otherwise remain associated with your account even though the phone itself has been wiped.

Remove Apple Pay cards and passes
Remove payment cards, transit cards, tickets and passes from the old iPhone when applicable. This is a separate account-and-service cleanup step, not a substitute for erasing the phone. Your bank or card issuer may also show the old phone in its list of authorized devices; remove it there if the issuer provides that control.

Handle iMessage when moving to a non-Apple phone
If you are switching from iPhone to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage so new messages reach your current number through the service your new phone uses. Complete this while you still control the number, and test by sending a message from another phone. If you are giving the iPhone to another Apple user, your normal account sign-out and erase process still applies.
Review trusted devices and sign-in approvals
Open your Apple Account or Google account security page on another device and remove the old phone from trusted or signed-in devices after the reset. Also review email, social, work and password-manager security pages. Removing the old entry prevents a future sign-in alert or approval request from being sent to a phone you no longer possess.

Once the data, accounts and cellular service are handled, inspect the physical handoff. Remove your case, memory card, personal labels and any other item that belongs to you. Wipe the screen and camera lenses with an appropriate soft cloth, and make sure the phone powers on to the setup screen.
Follow the receiving program’s instructions
Gift recipients and private buyers may want a charger, case or cable, but a mail-in trade-in program may not. Apple’s trade-in instructions say that its kit should not include items such as a case, power adapter or cables because those accessories will not be returned. That rule is specific to that trade-in process, so read the directions for the program you are using rather than applying it to every sale or gift.
For a trade-in, photograph the phone’s condition and record its serial number or IMEI before packing it. Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number. These records do not erase data, but they help resolve a dispute about what device was sent or whether it arrived.
Use this handoff sequence
- Transfer: Back up the old phone and move your data to the replacement or cloud account.
- Verify: Open representative photos, contacts, messages, notes and authentication tools on the destination device.
- Disconnect: Sign out of Apple, Google and other accounts; unpair an Apple Watch; remove Apple Pay cards and passes; deregister iMessage when changing platforms; and remove the old phone from trusted-device lists.
- Erase: Run the phone’s built-in erase or factory-reset command, using the device maker’s current instructions.
- Handle cellular service: Remove a physical SIM. For eSIM, coordinate with the carrier and erase the profile when the phone offers that option.
- Inspect and pack: Confirm the setup screen appears, remove personal accessories and follow the recipient’s packing rules.
Final checks before the phone leaves your hands
- The replacement phone or cloud account contains recent data from every category you need.
- The old phone shows the initial setup screen and does not display your name, passcode or account.
- No physical SIM, memory card or personal label remains inside or on the phone.
- Your carrier has completed any eSIM transfer, suspension or replacement.
- An Apple Watch is unpaired, Apple Pay items are removed and iMessage is deregistered if you changed to a non-Apple phone.
- The old device is gone from trusted-device and account-security lists.
- The receiving program’s instructions are packed with the phone, and prohibited accessories are left out.
If any check fails, do not hand over the phone yet. Reconnect it to Wi-Fi, correct the account or service issue, and repeat the erase flow. A few extra minutes at this stage are easier than recovering an account, a phone number or a cloud library after the device is gone.
