What to Read After Dungeon Crawler Carl: LitRPG and Progression Fantasy Picks

Cradle by Will Wight is the clearest first book to try after Dungeon Crawler Carl. It is the most frequently named series in a limited review of reader recommendation threads, and Will Wight is also quoted on the official Dungeon Crawler Carl publisher page. Start with Unsouled, the first Cradle book.

No series can be promised as a duplicate of Matt Dinniman’s blend of game mechanics, televised survival satire, dark comedy and emotionally complicated relationships. The useful way to choose your next read is to decide which part of that combination matters most to you: visible RPG systems, long-form protagonist progression, humor, or character relationships.

Why Dungeon Crawler Carl is unusually difficult to replace

In the official premise, Coast Guard veteran Carl and Princess Donut are forced to survive an alien-created dungeon that is also a reality television show. The setup combines traps, monsters, levels, quests, alliances and strategic resource management with an entertainment industry that turns survival into a spectacle. The publisher’s series page describes the central pressure clearly: the characters must play a lethal game while being watched and manipulated as performers.

That mixture creates several different reasons to enjoy the books. A reader may be there for the recognizable game interface, for the escalating challenges, for the jokes, for the rebellion against the rules, or for the bond between characters who are trying to remain human inside an inhuman system. A replacement that matches only one of those elements can still be a good next read, but it should not be sold as an identical experience.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Penguin Books Australia’s explanation of LitRPG is useful for separating those elements. LitRPG commonly makes role-playing-game logic explicit through levels, statistics, skills, quests and resource management. Progression fantasy, by contrast, is a broader reading preference: the central pleasure is watching characters steadily gain capability, understanding or status. A book can emphasize progression without presenting a literal game interface, and a book can use game mechanics without sharing Dungeon Crawler Carl’s satirical television premise.

A reported discussion in The Atlantic also emphasizes that the appeal is not just optimization. Its analysis points to relationships and to characters who resent, question and subvert the system governing them. That is why a technically similar LitRPG may still feel emotionally different.

1. Start with Cradle by Will Wight

Why it is the safest first experiment

Cradle is the strongest supported recommendation in the available reader evidence. LevelUpShelf counted 83 comments naming it across five selected Reddit recommendation threads, the highest count among the listed series. The official Dungeon Crawler Carl publisher page also carries an endorsement from Will Wight, author of Cradle. Those facts establish reader interest and a direct author connection; they do not prove that the two series have the same voice, humor, setting or structure.

The best reason to try Cradle first is its progression-forward appeal. If what you want next is a long-running fantasy journey built around visible advancement, it is the adjacent choice most directly supported by this set of evidence. Begin with Unsouled, rather than jumping into a later volume. Starting at the beginning lets you see the progression framework develop in the order intended by the author.

What not to expect

Do not pick up Cradle expecting another dungeon-as-television-season story. The evidence here does not establish a shared dungeon structure, identical comedy, or the same relationship dynamics. Treat it as a progression-focused follow-up, not a substitute that reproduces every feature of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

How to evaluate the first book

  1. Read the official description for Unsouled and confirm that a progression-centered fantasy is what you want.
  2. Give the opening chapters enough room to establish their world and advancement logic; do not judge the entire series by whether its opening recreates Dinniman’s premise.
  3. Continue only if the character growth and fantasy structure—not a televised dungeon parody—are satisfying your reason for choosing it.

The official publisher page for Dungeon Crawler Carl, which includes the Will Wight endorsement, is at Penguin Random House.

Title Comments naming it What the figure tells you What it does not establish
He Who Fights with Monsters 81 It was nearly as frequently named as Cradle in the sampled threads. The tally does not establish its tone, mechanics, completion status or similarity to DCC.
The Wandering Inn 56 It was a substantial reader-mentioned alternative in the sample. The number does not explain why commenters recommended it or guarantee a tonal match.
The Primal Hunter 44 It was repeatedly proposed by participants in the reviewed discussions. No precise comparison with DCC’s humor, relationships or game structure is established here.
Chrysalis 44 It received the same count as The Primal Hunter. The count is not a judgment of quality or evidence of identical genre execution.
Mark of the Fool 40 It was another recurring recommendation. The sample does not verify a specific progression model, voice or ending status.
Mage Tank 37 It appeared often enough to be a useful title to investigate. The available evidence does not support a detailed fit claim.

These counts come from LevelUpShelf’s review of five selected Reddit threads and 1,547 top-level comments, reviewed on October 10, 2026. Because the threads were selected rather than randomly sampled, the results cannot represent all LitRPG readers. The counts can help you build a shortlist, but they cannot tell you which book you will prefer.

For each title, verify the current official description, the exact first volume and the edition available in your region before starting. The evidence available here does not establish comparative series length, completion status, current listing availability or precise tonal matches.

Choose your next book by the part of DCC you want more of

If progression is your priority

Choose Cradle first. It is the only recommendation in this set that the evidence specifically supports as a progression-focused adjacent series. Start with Unsouled and decide whether the appeal of sustained advancement is enough without DCC’s televised-dungeon premise.

If explicit game mechanics are your priority

Look for an official description that specifically names systems such as levels, stats, skill trees, quests or resource management. Those are the recognizable LitRPG signals identified by Penguin Books Australia. Do not infer that a title has all of them merely because it is frequently recommended alongside DCC. The reader-thread tally does not provide that level of title-by-title detail.

If humor is your priority

Use a sample chapter, library preview or publisher excerpt to test the voice. The available recommendation counts do not measure comedy, and no source here verifies that any of the six alternatives shares Dinniman’s particular combination of dark jokes, absurdity and satire. A high mention count is therefore not evidence that a book is “the funniest” option.

If character relationships are your priority

Pay attention to how the official description frames companions, alliances and conflicts, then read enough to see whether relationships affect decisions rather than simply decorating the action. This matters because reported commentary on DCC treats emotional bonds and resistance to the governing rules as central parts of its appeal. A system-heavy description alone cannot tell you whether another series will deliver that experience.

If you want to explore rather than match

Use the six reader-mentioned titles as a research list. Begin with the one whose official premise sounds most appealing, not automatically the one with the second-highest count. The counts show what appeared in the selected conversations; they do not reveal each commenter’s reason or your own likely fit.

A practical way to test a recommendation

  1. Name the feature you are chasing. Write down one primary reason—progression, mechanics, humor or relationships—and one feature you are willing to give up. This prevents an impossible search for a book that duplicates every part of DCC.
  2. Check primary information first. Read the publisher or author description for the first volume. Confirm the title, series order and format rather than relying on a listicle’s shorthand.
  3. Separate premise from execution. A description can confirm that a book uses quests or advancement, but only a sample can tell you whether the prose, pacing and comedy suit you.
  4. Set a stopping rule. If the first volume does not deliver the feature you selected, move to another title. A recommendation is a starting point, not an obligation to finish an entire series.
  5. Reassess after one book. If you enjoyed the mechanics but missed the relationships, choose your next title using that newly clarified preference rather than repeating the same type of recommendation.

What the reader numbers mean—and what they cannot mean

The LevelUpShelf figures are useful because they expose the titles that surfaced repeatedly when readers asked questions such as “What should I read after Dungeon Crawler Carl?” and “What is the funniest LitRPG like Dungeon Crawler Carl?” Those are natural reader phrasings reported from the selected threads, not search-volume measurements.

The method matters. LevelUpShelf says it read five selected Reddit threads and counted title mentions in 1,547 top-level comments. That is a selected conversation sample, not a representative survey of LitRPG or progression-fantasy readers. A title named 83 times is not thereby better than one named 37 times, and the numbers cannot establish sales, completion, publication schedule or satisfaction.

Use the tally to decide what to investigate first, then use official descriptions and your own sample reading to make the actual choice. That two-stage process is more reliable than treating a recommendation count as a ranking.

The short answer

Read Unsouled, the first Cradle book, if you want the most strongly supported progression-focused next step. If that is not the aspect of Dungeon Crawler Carl you value most, use the reader-mentioned shortlist—He Who Fights with Monsters, The Wandering Inn, The Primal Hunter, Chrysalis, Mark of the Fool and Mage Tank—as titles to investigate, not as guaranteed matches. Choose by the feature you want more of, and verify each book’s current official description before committing.
