Nintendo’s official Zelda history places Ocarina of Time before the timeline divides, then puts The Wind Waker on the Adult Era path after the event described as “Hyrule is flooded.” The Wind Waker is playable by itself, but its opening has more meaning when you recognize the legend of the Hero of Time that its island communities preserve.
The short answer: start with Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time is the single best game to play before The Wind Waker. It supplies the direct historical context that The Wind Waker assumes without requiring you to complete every Zelda game.

Nintendo’s official history describes Ocarina of Time as the story of Link’s first meeting with Princess Zelda and Ganondorf’s attempt to seize the Triforce. Nintendo’s timeline then divides into different eras after that game. The Wind Waker branch is the Adult Era, following the event labeled “Hyrule is flooded.”

That connection appears immediately in The Wind Waker’s setting. On the opening island, people pass down the legend of the Hero of Time. Nintendo describes a custom in which boys who reach twelve dress in green, matching the age and clothing associated with that hero. Knowing that the Hero of Time is the figure established by Ocarina of Time turns the opening from background decoration into a reference to an earlier age.

You do not need Majora’s Mask to understand this path. Nintendo’s chart places it in the Child Era, a different branch from the Adult Era that leads to The Wind Waker. It can be an excellent follow-up to Ocarina of Time if you want to explore that separate branch, but it is optional preparation for The Wind Waker.
How the Zelda timeline connects these games
The important relationship is not simply release order. It is the branch of Nintendo’s timeline each game occupies.
| Game | Timeline role | Why it matters for this question | Original release information |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time | Before the timeline split | Establishes the Hero of Time whose legend and imagery shape The Wind Waker’s opening | November 21, 1998, Nintendo 64 |
| The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask | Child Era branch | Optional exploration of the other branch; not a direct setup for The Wind Waker | April 27, 2000, Nintendo 64 |
| The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker | Adult Era, after “Hyrule is flooded” | The game you are preparing to play; its island culture remembers the Hero of Time | December 13, 2002, GameCube |
| The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass | After The Wind Waker | Optional continuation, not a prequel requirement | June 23, 2007, Nintendo DS |
This makes Ocarina of Time the most relevant preparation even though its original release predates The Wind Waker by several years. The recommendation follows the story relationship shown in Nintendo’s history, not a claim that older games must always be played first.

What Ocarina of Time adds to The Wind Waker
It gives the Hero of Time a concrete identity
The Wind Waker begins in a community where the Hero of Time is remembered as a legendary figure. If you have played Ocarina of Time, that title refers to a character and a period you experienced directly. You understand why the people on the island treat the hero’s age and green clothing as part of a coming-of-age tradition rather than as arbitrary costume design.
Nintendo’s official description captures the connection: “On a small island in the middle of the ocean, where the legend of the Hero of Time is being passed down, it is customary to celebrate when young boys reach the age of twelve, the same age as the hero, by dressing them in green.” The line is an explicit bridge between the two games’ worlds.
It establishes the earlier Zelda, Ganondorf, and Triforce conflict
Nintendo’s account of Ocarina of Time centers on Link’s first meeting with Princess Zelda and Ganondorf’s attempt to seize the Triforce. Those are the key historical ingredients behind the legend that survives into The Wind Waker. You do not need to memorize every event or side character; experiencing that central conflict is enough to recognize what the later game is invoking.
It makes the timeline branch understandable
Nintendo’s timeline places the split after Ocarina of Time. That placement explains why two later games can refer to the same earlier hero while presenting different historical paths. Majora’s Mask belongs to the Child Era, while The Wind Waker belongs to the Adult Era after Hyrule is flooded. Playing Ocarina of Time first gives you the common point from which those branches diverge.
It changes how the opening’s details read
The value of the earlier game is not limited to recognizing a name. The green clothing, the age of twelve, and the island’s act of retelling a heroic past all become signs of cultural memory. The setting is not presenting the same kingdom in the same condition; it is presenting a later society that has inherited a story. That distinction helps explain why The Wind Waker can feel familiar in its mythology while looking radically different in its geography.

This is also why the recommendation is about context rather than a formal prerequisite. A new player can understand that an island community honors a legendary hero. A player who has completed Ocarina of Time understands which hero the community means and why Nintendo’s timeline places that memory on the Adult Era route.
Do you need to play Majora’s Mask first?
No. Majora’s Mask is an optional detour, not part of the direct preparation for The Wind Waker.
Nintendo’s chart places Majora’s Mask in the Child Era. The Wind Waker story you are preparing for is on the Adult Era path. Because the games occupy different branches, completing Majora’s Mask does not supply an additional required chapter of the history that leads to the flooded-world setting.

- You want the complete Ocarina-era comparison: Playing both games lets you see the two branches represented as separate experiences.
- You enjoy timeline study: The Child Era placement gives you another perspective on how Nintendo organizes the post-Ocarina of Time chronology.
- You have time for an optional game: Add it after Ocarina of Time, then move to The Wind Waker.
If your only goal is to understand The Wind Waker’s world, skipping Majora’s Mask does not leave a required gap.
Comparing the choices by player goal
| Your priority | Best choice | What you gain |
|---|---|---|
| Most direct story context | Ocarina of Time | The Hero of Time, the earlier Zelda-Ganondorf conflict, and the pre-split timeline position. |
| Exploring the other post-Ocarina branch | Majora’s Mask | A Child Era experience that is interesting alongside the timeline, but not required for The Wind Waker. |
| Continuing after the target game | Phantom Hourglass | A follow-up set a few months after The Wind Waker, with Link and Tetra’s pirates searching for a new land. |
| Finishing the target game quickly | Start The Wind Waker directly | The adventure is self-contained; prior play adds interpretation rather than access. |
This comparison also prevents a common mistake: treating “important to Zelda history” and “necessary before The Wind Waker” as the same standard. Majora’s Mask can be important to your understanding of the Child Era while still being unnecessary for the Adult Era setup.
The Wind Waker is the target, not a prerequisite
The Wind Waker is the game whose setting you are trying to understand, so it does not belong in a “before” list except as the destination of the sequence. Nintendo describes its opening as taking place on a small island where the Hero of Time legend is passed down. Link’s sister is kidnapped, sending him toward the Forsaken Fortress, where he encounters the King of Red Lions.
Those opening details work without prior knowledge. The benefit of Ocarina of Time is interpretive: you recognize the historical figure behind the island’s customs and understand that the new world is living with memories of an earlier age.
Approach the game as a self-contained adventure with historical echoes, not as a title that requires a checklist of earlier Zelda releases. Nintendo’s timeline supports one especially direct connection—Ocarina of Time to the Hero of Time legend—rather than a requirement to complete every game in the chronology.

What to play after The Wind Waker
Phantom Hourglass
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass belongs after The Wind Waker. Nintendo states that its events occur “A few months after the adventures in the Wind Waker…” and describes Link setting out with Tetra’s pirates in search of a new land.
That makes it the natural next stop if you want to continue from the world and characters introduced in The Wind Waker. It should not replace Ocarina of Time in the preparation order: it follows the target game rather than setting it up.
| Goal | Recommended order | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Understand The Wind Waker with the least extra playing | Ocarina of Time → The Wind Waker | Provides the Hero of Time and pre-split timeline context directly referenced by the opening. |
| Explore both branches associated with Ocarina of Time | Ocarina of Time → Majora’s Mask → The Wind Waker | Adds the Child Era experience before moving to the Adult Era path. |
| Continue the story after The Wind Waker | Ocarina of Time → The Wind Waker → Phantom Hourglass | Keeps the direct setup first and follows with Nintendo’s stated sequel placement. |
Choose your play order by the context you want
If you are new to Zelda
Play Ocarina of Time, then The Wind Waker. This is the cleanest route for a first-time player who wants historical context without turning the preparation into a large project.
If you mainly care about the timeline
Use Ocarina of Time as the anchor. After finishing it, decide whether the Child Era branch interests you. If it does, play Majora’s Mask; if not, go straight to The Wind Waker and follow the Adult Era path.
If you are replaying The Wind Waker
You can start The Wind Waker immediately. Replay Ocarina of Time only if you want to refresh the specific Hero of Time reference and the timeline position. The recommendation is about added context, not access or basic comprehension.
If you have access to only one earlier game
Choose Ocarina of Time. It ranks highest on direct story relevance. Majora’s Mask is valuable for the separate Child Era branch, but it is not the efficient choice when the destination is The Wind Waker.
If you want the shortest possible preparation
Read the opening premise of Ocarina of Time, play that game’s central story, and then begin The Wind Waker. There is no need to add Majora’s Mask merely to make the order look complete. Nintendo’s history identifies the direct bridge, and it is the Hero of Time legend carried from Ocarina of Time.

The same caution applies to controllers, language versions, display adapters, and save-transfer features. Nintendo’s history page establishes the games’ chronology and original platform metadata; it does not establish current storefront listings or regional compatibility.
What to check before buying
- Platform: Match the game to the hardware you actually own. The original releases span Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Nintendo DS.
- Region: Verify that the physical or digital edition is compatible with your console and account region.
- Language: Confirm the language version if that matters to your playthrough.
- Accessories: Older hardware may require a compatible controller or display connection.
- Save features: Check how the specific edition handles saving and whether any transfer feature you expect is supported.
No current price or stock claim belongs in this timeline recommendation unless it has been checked against a retailer or Nintendo’s current catalogue. Original release dates do not predict today’s cost, and the safest budget assumption is simply that prices and access vary by edition, condition, region, and platform.
A practical preparation plan
- Decide whether you want context or completion. For context, plan on Ocarina of Time followed by The Wind Waker. For completion of both branches, add Majora’s Mask between them.
- Confirm the edition you can legally play in your region. Match the platform, language, and regional version to your hardware before committing to the order. The original platforms listed by Nintendo are Nintendo 64 for Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, GameCube for The Wind Waker, and Nintendo DS for Phantom Hourglass.
- Play through Ocarina of Time with three references in mind. Notice Link’s meeting with Princess Zelda, Ganondorf’s attempt to seize the Triforce, and the timeline position Nintendo assigns to the game before the split.
- Start The Wind Waker and watch for the inherited legend. The island’s green-clothing custom and its story about the Hero of Time are the clearest links to the previous game.
- Add Majora’s Mask only if the Child Era interests you. Do not postpone The Wind Waker because you think Majora’s Mask is required; Nintendo places it on a different branch.
- Play Phantom Hourglass afterward if you want the continuation. Nintendo places its events a few months after The Wind Waker, making it a follow-up rather than preparation.
Common mistakes in planning this play order
- Treating release order as the only rule: Release dates explain when the games appeared, but Nintendo’s timeline branch explains why Ocarina of Time is the relevant context for The Wind Waker.
- Assuming every Ocarina-era game is mandatory: Majora’s Mask is in the Child Era and is optional for the Adult Era route.
- Putting Phantom Hourglass before The Wind Waker: Nintendo describes it as occurring a few months afterward, so it belongs in the follow-up position.
- Expecting the history page to confirm current stock: The official chronology lists original platforms and dates, but not today’s retail inventory, subscription access, or regional compatibility.
- Overstating the prerequisite: The Wind Waker can be enjoyed on its own. Ocarina of Time enriches the setting; it is not a formal entry requirement.
- Confusing a sequel with a setup game: Phantom Hourglass may be the next story chronologically, but that makes it a post-Wind Waker choice, not preparation.
- Buying by title alone: A listing can use a familiar game name while referring to a different edition or platform. Confirm the exact release before spending money.

The recommended order at a glance
For most players, use this two-game route:
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — the essential context pick and the timeline’s pre-split foundation.
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker — the Adult Era adventure whose opening remembers the Hero of Time.
Add Majora’s Mask only when you want the Child Era branch, and save Phantom Hourglass for after The Wind Waker. This order gives you the strongest story connection with the fewest unnecessary stops.
