The company has announced a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake for 2027, with further details and a release date still to come. For the existing numbered games, the most practical route is Resident Evil 4 → Resident Evil 5 → Resident Evil 6. If you are new to the series, start with the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake, then follow that route.
Are the Resident Evil 5 and 6 remakes confirmed?
No. Capcom’s June 8, 2026 announcement confirms a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake for 2027, not remakes of Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6. Capcom said, “The release date, along with further details, will be announced at a later date,” referring to the Code: Veronica project. The official announcement does not establish plans for remakes of the fifth or sixth games.

What order should you play Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6?
For a compact route through the numbered entries leading into the two games named in the title, play Resident Evil 4, then Resident Evil 5, then Resident Evil 6. Treat Resident Evil 4 as useful context, not a formal prerequisite. The strongest continuity reason to keep the order is that Capcom USA’s official recap describes Resident Evil 6 as taking place after the incidents of Resident Evil 5 and featuring returning characters.

| Route | Continuity and character context | Newcomer accessibility | Time commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 4 → Resident Evil 5 → Resident Evil 6 | Provides numbered-game context; puts the direct RE5-to-RE6 continuity in order. | Reasonable if you already know the series; it skips Capcom USA staff’s suggested entry point for newcomers. | Three games; no playtime figures are established here. |
| Resident Evil 2 (2019) → Resident Evil 4 → Resident Evil 5 → Resident Evil 6 | Adds another numbered-series installment before the RE5/RE6 sequence. | Best fit for a new player: Capcom USA staff calls the 2019 remake a “great jumping-on point for the series.” | Four games; no playtime figures are established here. |
These are practical routes rather than official prerequisites. The Capcom USA story recap supports playing RE5 before RE6 for continuity. The inclusion of RE4 is an editorial choice to add another numbered-series game before them.

- Completely enhanced visuals - New high-resolution textures have been created from scratch, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles, while still preserving the classic appearance of the original release.
- Fan-favorite Resident Evil characters - Rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and wanted criminal Billy Coen combine skills and buddy up to survive the undead and infected nightmares that await them.
- All original difficulty levels plus new Very Easy Mode for novice players
Do you need to play Resident Evil 4 before RE5?
No formal requirement is established. Play Resident Evil 4 first if you want another numbered entry before RE5 and would rather experience the games in this route than jump directly to the fifth. If your main concern is following the clearest continuity link into RE6, the supported order is simply RE5 before RE6; RE4 is additional context, not a stated gate.
Should you play RE5 before RE6, or can you skip to Resident Evil 6?
Play Resident Evil 5 first if you want the most coherent order: Capcom USA’s recap places RE6 after RE5’s incidents and notes that RE6 brings back characters. You can choose to start with RE6, but that means encountering a later point in this sequence without the earlier game’s context. The available official recap does not say that RE5 is a gameplay requirement for RE6.

- A New Perspective – See the eighth core entry in the Resident Evil series from a new vantage point in “Third Person Mode.” In addition to the intense first-person view players enjoyed in the initial release of Resident Evil Village, they can now watch Ethan in action and experience his journey from a new angle in Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion.
- The Story Continues – “Shadows of Rose” resumes the Winters family saga 16 years after the events of Resident Evil Village. The expansion’s new tale follows Rose Winters, the daughter of main protagonist Ethan, as she struggles with her terrifying powers. Explore the warped and twisted world inside the consciousness of the Megamycete in search of a cure.
- The Mercenaries Are Back and Bigger Than Ever – The beloved battle-the-clock mode, “The Mercenaries,” returns with new features. On top of the original content, “The Mercenaries Additional Orders” introduces fan favorites as new playable characters Lady Dimitrescu, Chris Redfield, and Lord Karl Heisenberg, each with their own unique abilities. This added content for Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion also includes new levels and other improvements.
- Bonus Game – Resident Evil Village will provide access to a free multiplayer experience titled Resident Evil Re:Verse, which releases on Oct. 28, 2022 alongside the launch of Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion. An all-star cast of iconic characters face off in four to six-player deathmatch battles in classic locations.
- Familiar Faces and Fresh Foes – Resident Evil series hero Chris Redfield returns under a shroud of seemingly sinister motives. Ethan will also encounter a host of new adversaries inhabiting the enigmatic village, all with their own distinctive attacks.
Where should a newcomer start?
Capcom USA staff recommends the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake as a jumping-on point. Its October 18, 2024 guide says: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” The guide does not identify an individual speaker. For a newcomer who also wants the numbered-game context before RE5 and RE6, continue from RE2 (2019) to RE4, RE5, and RE6.
That recommendation is a starting suggestion, not a claim that RE2 is required to understand the later games. Read Capcom USA’s Resident Evil: Where to Play for its broader overview of entry points.

Are Revelations games necessary before RE5 or RE6?
The accessible official material used for this guide does not establish whether the Resident Evil Revelations games are necessary before RE5 or RE6, or provide a definitive placement for them in this route. If you want to explore more of the series, Capcom’s official history page and official lineup page are reference points, but they do not support treating a Revelations entry as a prerequisite here.
