Play Persona 4 Golden if you want one game to play before Persona 4 Revival. SEGA describes Revival as a remake of Golden, which itself expands the original Persona 4. The original is optional: choose it if you specifically want to experience or compare the older release.
Why Golden is the better single playthrough
Persona 4 Golden includes the original story and adds content. Its European PlayStation Vita release announcement described it as an enhanced and extended version of Persona 4, citing new story events with a new character, additional Personas, remastered visuals, new anime cutscenes, more voiced dialogue, and an online dungeon-rescue feature. Those details describe the 2013 Vita release; they are not a claim that Vita is the only platform on which Golden is available today. NIS America’s release announcement.

SEGA calls Persona 4 Revival a remake of Persona 4 Golden. That makes Golden the most directly relevant version for a single preparation playthrough. It does not establish that every addition in Golden will return unchanged in the remake: the official material reviewed does not provide a complete feature-by-feature list of returning content. Choose the original Persona 4 if you are interested in the series’ history or want to compare the earlier release with Golden and, later, Revival. Otherwise, starting there is not necessary to understand the recommendation: the official descriptions present Golden as an expanded version, and none identifies the original as a prerequisite for the remake.

The official regional website also lists Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for May 20, 2027. Its feature description says the remake stays true to the original story while changing gameplay, and lists seasonal events, new scenes, voiced Social Links and new events, and remastered music. ATLUS General Producer Kazuhisa Wada has said the team intends to preserve the story, characters, and themes while updating presentation and gameplay. In an interview with Xbox Wire, he said: “We haven’t changed what lies at the heart of Persona 4, its story, its characters, or the themes that define the experience.” He also described enhancing visuals, presentation, and immersion. Those comments explain the developer’s stated approach; they are not independent confirmation of how the finished game compares feature by feature. Xbox Wire interview with Kazuhisa Wada.
