The recommended Kingdom Hearts order for a first playthrough
Kingdom Hearts tells its story out of chronological order. Prequels reveal information that the original games deliberately hold back, while side stories explain characters who later become important. Playing every title by its in-world date can therefore spoil introductions and reduce the impact of major reveals.

What each entry contributes
1. KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX-
Begin with the first game, not a prequel. Its opening establishes Sora, Donald and Goofy travelling between Disney-inspired worlds after Sora’s home disappears. Sora is searching for Riku and Kairi while fighting the Heartless, and the game teaches the series’ basic ideas: hearts, worlds, Keyblades and the cost of losing someone.
Final Mix is the expanded edition used in modern collections. It is the clearest starting point because every later character relationship grows from this foundation. Do not worry if the terminology initially feels dense; the first game is designed to introduce the vocabulary gradually.
2. Re:Chain of Memories
Play Re:Chain of Memories before KHII, or watch a complete story recap if its card-based combat is a barrier. Sora and Riku enter Castle Oblivion, where each floor manipulates their memories and introduces people connected to the mysterious Organization XIII.
The card system is substantially different from the first game. You build decks, select room cards and manage attacks in real time rather than simply choosing commands from a conventional menu. If you skip the game, do not skip its plot: a full recap should cover Sora’s Castle Oblivion story, Riku’s campaign and the memory consequences that explain the beginning of KHII. Be explicit with yourself that you are recapping rather than playing.
3. KINGDOM HEARTS II -FINAL MIX-
KHII opens with Roxas in Twilight Town before returning to Sora, Donald and Goofy. That opening is intentionally slow and disorienting; it introduces Roxas, Nobodies and the emotional stakes that later connect back to Sora. Resist the urge to skip it.
The main journey follows the trio as they confront Organization XIII and try to reunite with Riku. KHII assumes you know the first game and Chain of Memories, so playing those first makes its character reveals far easier to follow.
4. Birth by Sleep -FINAL MIX-
This is a prequel, but it works best after KHII. You play as Terra, Ventus and Aqua, three Keyblade wielders whose separate journeys converge around Master Xehanort’s scheme and the origins of the Keyblade War.

The three campaigns overlap but are not interchangeable. Each character sees different events and develops relationships that matter much later. Completing all three stories is preferable; if time is limited, do not treat one campaign as a substitute for the others because each supplies different information.
5. 358/2 Days
The 1.5+2.5 collection includes 358/2 Days, but many modern editions present it as a collection of story scenes rather than the original playable Nintendo DS game. It follows Roxas, Axel and Xion inside Organization XIII and explains why their relationships matter in KHII.
Watch the complete presentation if your edition does not provide the original game. It is especially valuable for players who finished KHII and still feel that Roxas or Xion’s history was underexplained. Because formats vary by platform and region, verify whether your purchase contains a playable game or a cinematic story version.
6. Re:coded
Re:coded is also listed in the 1.5+2.5 package. It is less important than the numbered games and major bridges for a minimum route, but it contributes context to later plot threads. As with 358/2 Days, the collection may provide a story presentation rather than the original format.

7. Dream Drop Distance HD
Play Dream Drop Distance HD before KHIII. The game follows Sora and Riku as they seek the power to release sleeping hearts, while revealing more of Master Xehanort’s long-laid plans.
Its “Drop” mechanic can switch you between characters during a play session, and the game introduces concepts that KHIII expects you to recognize. It is not a skippable side story if your goal is to understand how the next phase of the conflict begins.

8. χ Back Cover
χ Back Cover is a cinematic story presentation in the HD 2.8 collection, not a conventional full-length playable entry. It explores the Keyblade era and the Foretellers, widening the historical context behind the modern characters.
Watch it when you reach the 2.8 collection. It does not replace any of the playable games in the route, but it helps explain why the series’ mythology extends far beyond Sora’s personal journey.
9. 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-
0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- is a short playable bridge included in HD 2.8. It follows Aqua and connects the events of Birth by Sleep to the situation leading into KHIII.
Play it immediately before KHIII. Its mechanics and presentation are closer to the modern numbered game, so it also works as a useful transition from the older entries.
10. KINGDOM HEARTS III
KHIII is the major payoff to the Dark Seeker saga. It gathers characters and plotlines introduced across the earlier games, which is why starting here or relying on a short “previously on” video can leave important relationships feeling unearned.
Finish the base game before deciding whether to buy or play Re Mind. The base campaign is the main numbered entry; the DLC is additional material around its climax.
11. KINGDOM HEARTS III Re Mind
Re Mind is optional post-game content included with the official KHIII bundle. It adds scenes and playable material around the climax, but the available official information does not establish it as a requirement for KINGDOM HEARTS IV.

Play it after completing KHIII, not in the middle of the campaign. Its structure assumes that you already know the base game’s ending.
12. Melody of Memory
Melody of Memory is a rhythm game that recaps the series and adds story scenes set after KHIII. You do not need to complete every musical stage to understand the new narrative material.

If rhythm gameplay is not your preference, prioritize the story scenes or watch a complete recap after finishing KHIII and Re Mind. It is a useful KH4 catch-up supplement, not a substitute for the earlier games.
The shortest route that still preserves the main story
Readers with limited time can reduce the route without starting at KHIII. Use this order:
- KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX-
- Re:Chain of Memories, or a complete recap of both Sora’s and Riku’s stories
- KINGDOM HEARTS II -FINAL MIX-
- Birth by Sleep -FINAL MIX-
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-
- KINGDOM HEARTS III
Add the 358/2 Days story presentation if Roxas, Axel and Xion are important to you. Use χ Back Cover and Re:coded according to your available time, and consider Melody of Memory after KHIII.

Square Enix lists KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I〜III] as on sale. It combines three packages:

Availability differs by package, platform and region, so check the exact store listing before purchasing.
The collection’s list of titles does not, by itself, guarantee that every item is a full playable game. In particular, 358/2 Days, Re:coded and χ Back Cover may be presented as story material depending on the edition. Confirm the contents and describe a cinematic presentation as a movie or recap rather than as a playable release.
How to avoid the most common newcomer mistakes
- Do not sort everything by in-world chronology on your first run. Prequels can reveal information that release order intentionally withholds.
- Do not silently skip Re:Chain of Memories. If the card combat is not for you, use a complete recap and note that you are replacing gameplay, not the story.
- Do not assume every collection entry is playable. Check the platform’s exact contents, especially for 358/2 Days, Re:coded and χ Back Cover.
- Do not play Re Mind before finishing KHIII. It is post-game material built around the base game’s climax.
- Do not treat a fan route as a developer checklist. No verified official KH4 prerequisite list is established here.
- Do not expect one mechanic across the series. The route includes conventional action combat, card-based battles, the Drop system and a rhythm-game format.
What is actually known about Kingdom Hearts 4?
The available official material does not establish a current release date, a confirmed platform list or a required set of previous games for KINGDOM HEARTS IV. Avoid repeating speculative launch windows as facts.
