There is no single best follow-up to an unnamed PS2 game. The right PS5 choice depends on what you actually miss: colorful platforming, fixed-camera tension, deliberate horror, mythic combat, stealth, exploration, or deep RPG systems.

Use this quick matcher first, then read the relevant section for differences in tone, controls, remake fidelity, difficulty, and access.

Quick matcher: choose by the PS2 experience you want to preserve

If your PS2 favorite was… Start with on PS5 Why it fits What changes
Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, or another colorful 3D platformer Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Shooting, gadgets, platforming, bright worlds, collectibles, and rapid traversal. A faster, more cinematic presentation with heavier combat systems and PS5-specific effects.
A direct horror classic Silent Hill 2 A complete PS5 remake of the 2001 PS2 survival-horror game. Modern camera and presentation alter how exploration, combat, and puzzles feel.
Shadow of the Colossus Shadow of the Colossus (2018 remake) The same climb-and-solve structure, faithfully retold with modern presentation. Updated controls and visuals can make the lonely world feel less archaic.
God of War or another mythic action game God of War (2018), followed by Ragnarök A deliberate modern continuation of Kratos’s action-adventure formula and storytelling. The camera, pacing, character relationships, and world structure are substantially more modern.
Stealth and stylish traversal Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut Open-world samurai action combines quiet exploration, precise melee, and stealth-adjacent encounters. The larger world gives you more optional activities and a less linear rhythm.
Narrative action or cinematic horror The Last of Us: Part I PS5-enhanced visuals, combat, enemy AI, and a strongly authored story. Resource scarcity and stealth replace the power fantasy of many PS2 action games.
An RPG, city-builder, or hybrid action game Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade A modern route for players who valued character progression, exploration, and a larger narrative. Real-time combat and cinematic pacing take priority over the slower systems of many PS2 RPGs.
Older catalog texture rather than a remake PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog It can surface games such as Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper. Input feel, emulation features, and availability depend on the individual title and region.

If you want the safest first purchase without knowing your favorite PS2 game, choose Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for colorful action or Silent Hill 2 for horror. Those are the clearest PS5-era answers to two of the most recognizable PS2 playstyles.

First identify what you loved about the PS2 game

The PS2 library grouped very different experiences under the same generation. A player asking for “another PS2 game” might mean a compact platforming world, a slow-burn horror story, a boss-puzzle adventure, or a system-heavy RPG. Genre alone is not enough; camera behavior, difficulty, tone, and the amount of guidance matter just as much.

#1 Best Overall
Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor

Was movement the main attraction?

Think about jumping, wall-running, swinging, vehicle sections, collectibles, and the pleasure of reaching a previously inaccessible ledge. Games built around movement usually benefit most from a modern successor rather than a faithful remake, because responsive controls and fast loading matter as much as art direction.

Did you want fear, or did you want combat?

PS2 horror often made the player feel weak through limited resources, awkward sightlines, and uncertainty. Modern horror may be visually clearer while remaining psychologically oppressive. Decide whether you want the oppressive mystery of Silent Hill 2 or the more active stealth-and-resource pressure of The Last of Us: Part I.

Did the PS2 game ask you to solve spaces?

Shadow of the Colossus is an extreme example: each major encounter is both a fight and a traversal puzzle. If that structure matters more than loot or dialogue, a large open-world game may feel too distracted even when its combat is excellent.

Did progression systems keep you playing?

The official PlayStation generational guide describes Dark Cloud as a hybrid RPG, city builder, and action game. That combination is different from a straightforward action title. Players who remember upgrading equipment, rebuilding settlements, or shaping a party should start with a modern RPG route rather than assuming every third-person adventure will scratch the same itch.

Best direct PS2 lineages on PS5

Silent Hill 2: the clearest horror remake

Silent Hill 2 is the most direct answer for someone who wants a PS2 classic recreated for current hardware. PlayStation describes it as “the iconic survival horror experience of 2001, originally released for PlayStation 2” that “has been completely remade for PS5.” The premise remains James Sunderland’s search for his wife in the strange town of Silent Hill.

This is a psychological-horror choice, not a conventional action game. The appeal comes from atmosphere, disorientation, puzzle solving, and the tension of moving through spaces where information is deliberately incomplete. Combat is present, but treating the game as a shooter misses its central rhythm: investigate, interpret clues, manage danger, and decide when pressing forward is worth the risk.

  • EARN THE NUMBER - Discover a new James Bond origin story, and the events that led a young maverick to become the best MI6 agent.
  • A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
  • SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.

Choose it when your PS2 reference point was a direct horror classic and you want the original’s identity preserved rather than replaced with a new setting. Expect modern camera behavior and presentation to change the texture of exploration. The remake can look clearer while still making the town feel hostile and unknowable.

Shadow of the Colossus (2018): the same core, rebuilt

The original Shadow of the Colossus first arrived on PS2 in 2005. PlayStation’s generational guide describes Bluepoint’s 2018 version as a faithful retelling that preserves the colossus-climbing and puzzle-solving core. On a PS5, seek the current PlayStation Store listing for the 2018 remake and verify compatibility for your region and edition.

This is the best fit when your favorite PS2 memory is a huge, quiet landscape interrupted by a small number of carefully designed encounters. Each colossus functions as a moving environmental puzzle: observe its body, find a route upward, manage stamina, and identify the vulnerable points. The game does not replace that structure with a conventional quest log or a dense loot economy.

The remake’s modern visuals make scale and weather easier to read, while updated control options can reduce friction for new players. That does not make the experience easy. The intended mood remains lonely, mournful, and patient, so choose it over a busier open-world adventure if atmosphere and boss design matter more than constant activity.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: a modern platform-shooter starting point

Rift Apart is not a remake of one specific PS2 campaign. It is the strongest PS5 starting point for the series’ colorful combination of platforming, shooting, gadgets, collectibles, and fast traversal. In a January 16, 2025 PlayStation.Blog feature, PlayStation called it the biggest and most graphically stunning Ratchet & Clank outing and highlighted its Rift Tether and DualSense features.

The game is built around movement as much as firepower. You jump, strafe, swap weapons, exploit environmental opportunities, and use rifts to cross space quickly. Bright worlds and readable objectives make it approachable, while the weapon roster and difficulty options give experienced players room to experiment.

  • An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
  • Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. • Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!

PlayStation’s remake guide notes that the earlier Ratchet & Clank remake took cues from the 2002 PS2 release, added planets and new Clank gameplay, and used voice acting from the 2016 animated movie. Rift Apart should be treated as the PS5-era route when you want the series’ design language expanded rather than simply replayed.

Modern successors for PS2 action-adventure fans

God of War (2018) and Ragnarök: a deliberate mythic route

If your PS2 favorite was God of War or another mythic action game, play God of War (2018) first and treat Ragnarök as the follow-up. PlayStation presents the 2018 game as Kratos’s modern return, with more deliberate storytelling than the earlier spectacle-driven structure.

The most important change is the camera and the relationship between combat and character development. Fights remain forceful, but the game spends more time on exploration, dialogue, equipment choices, and the evolving relationship between Kratos and Atreus. The result is less like a sequence of disconnected set pieces and more like a continuous journey through connected spaces.

Choose this pair when you want weighty melee, mythological stakes, and a story that takes its characters seriously. Do not choose it expecting the compact arcade-like progression of a short PS2 campaign; the modern games ask for more time and attention.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut: stealth-adjacent open-world action

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut is the best match for a PS2 player who remembers stealth, stylish traversal, and the satisfaction of approaching an encounter on their own terms. Its samurai setting supports precise melee, quiet infiltration, exploration, and optional activities that reward slowing down.

It is not a pure stealth game. Open confrontations and deliberate standoffs are central, and the large map lets you choose whether to follow the main story or investigate side content. That makes it a useful bridge from compact PS2 levels to modern open-world design.

The Last of Us: Part I: cinematic action with survival pressure

The Last of Us: Part I is a PS5-enhanced version of a narrative action game, with upgraded visuals, combat, and enemy AI. It fits players who valued cinematic storytelling but still want encounters that reward observation and planning.

Its combat loop is shaped by scarcity. You search rooms for materials, decide whether to spend ammunition, and use stealth to separate threats before committing to a fight. That pressure creates a different power curve from Ratchet & Clank or God of War: success often means avoiding a perfect battle rather than winning one quickly.

Choose it for authored pacing, emotional intensity, and grounded danger. It is less suitable if your favorite PS2 feature was free-form exploration or a large collection of upgrades.

RPG and hybrid routes

From Dark Cloud’s hybrid systems to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Dark Cloud is useful as a baseline because PlayStation classifies it as a hybrid RPG, city builder, and action game. That description explains why a conventional action-adventure substitute may feel incomplete: the original combines combat with rebuilding and progression systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the strongest modern PlayStation route when you want character growth, equipment decisions, party abilities, and a large narrative presented through real-time combat. It is more cinematic and structured than Dark Cloud, so the match is about the desire for layered progression rather than identical mechanics.

THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER: Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
  • Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

Players coming from Jak and Daxter should remember that PlayStation describes the series’ first game as an expansive 3D world with puzzles and collectibles. Players coming from Sly Cooper should note the emphasis on stealth and toon-shaded presentation. Those distinctions help prevent a common mistake: choosing a game because it is third-person when the real attraction was collectible routing, stealth timing, or puzzle density.

Use the Classics Catalog when you want the original design language

A modern remake is not always the best answer. If what you miss is the PS2-era camera, level size, sound design, or unusual control feel, the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog can be a better discovery route than a modern successor. PlayStation’s platformer guide specifically points to games including Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper.

Catalog access is not universal. PlayStation warns: “The PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog lineup may differ in certain regions.” Check the catalog shown on your own account before planning a subscription around a particular title. Individual games can also differ in emulation features, save behavior, display options, and control support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Classics Catalog when authenticity matters more than convenience. Choose a remake or modern successor when you want contemporary camera control, faster traversal, accessibility options, or a presentation designed for current displays.

How to make the final choice

  1. Name the dominant activity. Is it jumping and collecting, solving boss arenas, surviving horror, building character power, or sneaking through guarded spaces?
  2. Set your tolerance for modernization. A remake may preserve story and structure while changing camera behavior, combat timing, enemy reactions, and puzzle presentation.
  3. Choose your pacing. Compact levels favor Rift Apart and many legacy games; open-ended exploration favors Ghost of Tsushima; deliberate narrative pacing favors God of War or The Last of Us: Part I.
  4. Decide how much fear you want. Select Silent Hill 2 for psychological horror and investigation, or The Last of Us: Part I for stealth, scarcity, and more frequent combat decisions.
  5. Verify the edition and platform listing. PS2 remakes, PS4-era releases, PS5-native versions, and Classics Catalog entries are different access routes. Confirm the current store page for your region before buying or subscribing.
  6. Start with one game, not a genre pile. Play the opening hours long enough to test camera comfort, combat feel, and pacing before deciding that the entire modern style is wrong for you.

Common mismatches and how to avoid them

Choosing a famous game instead of a similar game

Critical reputation does not guarantee a match. A celebrated open-world title may frustrate someone who loved tightly authored PS2 stages. Use the activity and pacing tests above before following popularity.

Assuming every remake is a museum piece

Silent Hill 2 and Shadow of the Colossus preserve recognizable foundations, but modern camera systems, lighting, animation, and input options affect the experience. Buy a remake for continuity of identity, not for an untouched control scheme.

Expecting a PS5 game to reproduce PS2 limitations

Older games often created tension through restricted viewpoints, slower loading, sparse checkpoints, or limited inventory. New hardware removes some friction. If those limitations were part of the appeal, the Classics Catalog may be more satisfying than a polished successor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing a series connection with a mechanical match

A game can share a publisher, character, or broad genre and still play differently. Rift Apart matches colorful platform-shooting; God of War matches mythic action and character drama; Ghost of Tsushima matches stealth-adjacent exploration. Those are different reasons to recommend them.
