What to Play After Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse — Metroidvanias With Similar Combat and Exploration

Start with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It is the best-supported next game for someone who wants Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse’s combination of map-led exploration and active whip combat. Konami producer Tsutomu Taniguchi was reported by PC Gamer as saying that the team drew “significant inspiration” from Symphony of the Night when choosing an exploration-oriented design for Belmont’s Curse. That establishes a design lineage, not a promise that the two games control identically.

If you are looking beyond that direct comparison, judge any candidate on three questions: does it reward revisiting a connected world, does its combat demand active decisions rather than passive attacks, and do discoveries change how you move or fight? The guide below uses those tests without presenting unverified games as exact matches.

Why Symphony of the Night is the first game to try

Belmont’s Curse is described by Konami as a 2D action-exploration game built around whip mechanics. Its official game site presents Rose Belmont’s adventure as faster and more fluid, with fast-paced whip combat. PlayStation’s listing adds an important detail: the whip is used both to fight and to move, while equipment found through exploration can be combined to create a personal playstyle.

That combination points to more than a straightforward action platformer. The map matters, traversal is part of combat, and discoveries can alter the way you approach later rooms. Symphony of the Night is the clearest follow-up because the connection is documented rather than inferred from surface similarities. In the report quoted above, Taniguchi specifically linked Belmont’s Curse’s exploration-oriented design to inspiration from Symphony of the Night.

Think of Symphony as a lineage match, not a mechanical duplicate. The most useful expectation is that you will find a strong emphasis on exploring a connected castle, returning to earlier areas as your options expand, and combining movement through the map with real-time combat. The precise weapon behavior, pacing and progression systems are not established by the cited statement alone, so approach it as the closest documented starting point rather than an identical remake.

What to expect if exploration is your priority

Choose Symphony first when your favorite part of Belmont’s Curse is wondering where a blocked passage leads. The relevant design trait is a world that encourages you to remember suspicious rooms, locked routes and unexplained gaps, then return after finding a new capability. A game can contain a large map without offering that kind of discovery loop; what matters is whether exploration changes your next decision.

What to expect if combat is your priority

Choose it when you want combat to remain part of navigation rather than a separate sequence of arenas. Belmont’s Curse’s official descriptions put the whip at the center of both fighting and movement. That makes timing, spacing and positioning important questions for every room. Symphony is the best-supported next step for that overall philosophy, while the available evidence does not justify claiming that every attack, enemy pattern or input is the same.

Use these three tests for every other Metroidvania

Many games are marketed as Metroidvanias, but the label alone does not tell you whether they will satisfy a player coming from Belmont’s Curse. Evaluate each candidate against the following axes before buying or starting it.

1. Exploration structure

  • Connected world: Are major areas part of one navigable map, or are they isolated stages selected from a menu?
  • Reasons to backtrack: Do discoveries make earlier locations worth revisiting, or does the game mostly move forward?
  • Readable clues: Does the environment leave understandable hints about routes you cannot yet access?
  • Map usefulness: Can you mark or recognize unresolved doors, ledges and passages without relying on an external guide?

A large map is not automatically an exploration-focused map. The strongest match for Belmont’s Curse is a game in which remembering a location and returning with a new option is part of normal play, not optional completionist work.

2. Combat feel

  • Deliberate timing: Attacks have readable startup and recovery, so choosing when to strike matters.
  • Movement under pressure: Dodging, jumping, positioning or traversal can determine whether an encounter is safe.
  • Attack range: A whip-like or otherwise extended attack changes how you control space, but a different weapon can still fit if it creates similarly active decisions.
  • Variety of responses: Equipment, abilities or attack types let you adapt instead of repeating one move for every enemy.

Do not reject a recommendation simply because it uses a sword, projectile or another weapon instead of a whip. The more meaningful comparison is whether combat asks you to manage distance and timing while moving through the map.

3. Does exploration change combat?

The best successors make discoveries useful in two directions. A new ability might open a route, but it should also change how you approach enemies or traversal. PlayStation’s description of Belmont’s Curse specifically says equipment found through exploration can be combined to create a playstyle. When assessing another game, look for the equivalent: upgrades that alter movement, range, defense, attack options or the order in which you can solve problems.

A practical comparison framework

Use this worksheet for any game you are considering. It separates a genuine fit from a title that merely shares a side-scrolling view.

  • Use and upgrade abilities like the Morph Ball, Missiles, and an array of beams to survive the harsh environments and lethal creatures of the planet Tallon IV

  • Scan your surroundings to gather information about the planet’s history and the creatures that call it home or to reveal enemies’ weak points
  • Choose from multiple control options and experience revamped graphics, sound, and unlockable art in this remastered classic
Question Strong match Weak match
How is the world organized? One connected map with meaningful revisits Mostly linear stages with little return travel
What does combat ask of you? Timing, spacing and movement decisions during exploration Repeated attacks with little positioning or adaptation
What do discoveries do? Open routes and expand combat or traversal choices Provide mostly cosmetic rewards or a larger number on a menu
How does progression feel? You recognize a problem, gain an option and solve it later Progress depends mainly on a fixed sequence of levels
What is the evidence for the comparison? Official feature descriptions or a clearly attributable design statement Only a genre label, screenshot or vague marketing phrase

On this test, Symphony of the Night is the first recommendation because its relationship to Belmont’s Curse is supported by an attributable statement about exploration design. For any additional title, confirm its own map, combat and progression systems before calling it similar.

How Belmont’s Curse sets your expectations

The game’s setting and protagonist also shape what “similar” means. Konami’s launch announcement places Rose Belmont beneath the Paris catacombs and in Dracula’s castle, while describing exploration-driven combat. The official site emphasizes Rose’s growth and faster, more fluid gameplay. These details suggest a journey in which movement through dangerous spaces and character development are tied together.

Expect active traversal, not passive map completion

Because the whip is used for movement as well as combat, a comparable game should make traversal itself an action skill. Look for rooms where reaching a platform, crossing a hazard or creating distance from an enemy requires deliberate input. A map that merely connects combat rooms will feel different even if it contains keys and locked doors.

Expect progression to support experimentation

PlayStation’s listing says exploration-discovered equipment can be combined to create a playstyle. That is a stronger promise than simply collecting upgrades in a fixed order. When choosing a follow-up, check whether new equipment changes your decisions or only raises damage. Build variety is most relevant when it affects how you enter rooms, which routes you attempt and how you handle threats.

Expect pace to matter

The official site calls the gameplay faster and more fluid. A methodical exploration game can still be excellent, but it will not necessarily satisfy someone seeking the same tempo. Watch gameplay footage, if available, for the time between attacks, the speed of traversal and how quickly the game lets you recover from a mistake. Those observations are more useful than a generic claim that a title is “action-packed.”

Release timing and what is currently confirmed

Nintendo’s official store and PlayStation’s listing give Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse a release date of October 15, 2026. Konami’s launch announcement uses the same date and names a Midnight Edition. The cited listings were captured on October 13, 2026, two days before that announced launch, so current platform availability should be checked directly before you buy or recommend the game to someone else.

The available announcement does not establish what the Midnight Edition contains, whether it is physical or digital, or which retailers stock it. Treat that name as an edition label to verify, not as a reason to choose a particular version. Confirm the platform, regional availability, format and included content on the current official store page.

A decision path for choosing your next game

  1. Start with your favorite moment. If it was discovering a route or returning with a new capability, prioritize connected-map exploration. If it was surviving a difficult encounter, prioritize timing, spacing and movement.
  2. Try Symphony of the Night first. It is the only follow-up in this guide with a documented design connection to Belmont’s Curse.
  3. Screen alternatives using the three axes. Verify exploration structure, moment-to-moment combat and whether discoveries change your options.
  4. Check the progression loop. Make sure upgrades do more than increase statistics if experimentation is important to you.
  5. Confirm platform and edition details. Release dates and availability can change, especially around a new launch. Use the current official listing rather than an old store page or an undated video description.
  6. Set expectations before starting. “Similar exploration” does not guarantee similar weapon reach, enemy design, difficulty curve or movement speed. Decide which trait matters most and accept differences in the others.

Common mistakes when looking for a match

Choosing by genre label alone

“Metroidvania” usually signals exploration and ability-gated progress, but it does not specify combat rhythm. Two games can share the label while offering completely different movement, attack timing and map density. Read feature descriptions for the actual systems.

Assuming inspiration means identical play

Taniguchi’s reported comment establishes significant inspiration from Symphony of the Night for an exploration-oriented design. It does not establish identical controls, enemies, progression or content. Use the connection to choose where to begin, then evaluate each game on its own terms.

Buying an edition before checking its contents

The Midnight Edition is named in Konami’s announcement, but its contents, format and retailer availability are not specified there. Do not pay a premium based only on the name. Verify exactly what is included for your region.

Ignoring the combat-exploration relationship

A game may have excellent combat and an excellent map while keeping those systems separate. If what you want is the particular blend described for Belmont’s Curse—whip use for movement and fighting, plus equipment discovered through exploration—check that discoveries actually affect how you play.

The short answer

Play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night first. It has the strongest documented connection to Belmont’s Curse’s exploration-focused direction, making it the most defensible recommendation for a player seeking similar combat and discovery. For every game beyond that starting point, verify the map structure, combat decisions and progression effects rather than trusting a genre tag or a superficial visual resemblance.
